Really good conversation between two guys who hit the physical genetic lottery for surfing, and through their consistent dedication over all these years, didn’t let those gifts go to waste. Been in awe of both of them for 3+ decades.
one of the most natural interviews of slater i've ever seen. occy is an amazing interviewer--knows how to let the person go without interrupting, but then jumps in with a really bold question. and he seems so genuinely interested in the person and engaged, along with that upbeat energy. the wave pool talk maybe went on a little long--occ tried to divert it with the question about whether slater wanted to surf big waves, but he let him go back to it, without being controlling. definitely looking forward to more of these.
Agree for sure. Love these. I think Occy will shine even more with the older guys on tour, and those he has had a closer friendship with. It's human thing of course. Hope he interviews Bruce Irons. No doubt it will happen. P.S. The sound was a bit dodgy guys.
bruce would be great! and taj. albee layer. greg long. mason ho could be a trip, and sure would be interesting to see if he coudl get anything out of medina.
Sat on the wall at Kalk Bay in 1986 and watched Occy tear it to pieces, I was 12! The next 3 years I was Occy in every surf :) Great podcast long live the Kings
Kelly it is always very interesting to see how the "Champ" thinks! All the success you have had and you are still able to keep your mind and karma clean and free allowing you to maintain and continue in your success. You are a great lesson in what to do!
Congrats Occy, Billabong & the person who created/green lighted the Occ podcast interviews. Occy still has plenty of things to give back to our beloved surfing lifestyle & you can tell he is honest enough to create the right atmosphere for such interesting conversations. Kelly? So cool to have such an ambassador for surfing who will keep breaking barriers. Keep it up guys, we follow.
You guys are very cool Surf Brothers! Interesting on the food & diet Kelly! Take care of your back. Occ love your interviews! Occ it is fantastic how you pull the entire Surf community together through all of your interviews! Billabong is lucky to have you!
Rodney Mullen the skateboarder talked about becoming "stanceless" to fix all his injuries. There's something in that idea for older surfers who have put so much pressure on certain body parts from life of surfing. Think I might switch it up too...
Saw Occy surf at the Wave Wizard Challenge in Singer Island Florida. I think it was 1984 or 1985. They had to use a boat to make the waves for the contest.
Was on King Island recently and there's a surfboard in the cafe there signed by Kelly. Im guessing Kelly is a regular visitor there considering the waves are smoking.👌
Precisely what I was tilting at. The TED crowd would LOVE his wave pool and the eco elements of it. He could also do a talk on his emerging clothing line and how cutting edge it is in terms of the materials and eco-friendliness of it. Granted, the togs are VERY pricy but that's how it always goes with new product and materials. As the line grows and more people buy it the prices will come down on many items and the line will expand to include more affordable options.
seems like kelly is being kind of chilly/stiff at first, like making it sound like he didn't want to do the interview but occ caught him off guard out in the water, then when occ asks him if he wants good results, says sarcastically "no". seems like it too him awhile to thaw out. i think it would be hard to stay cold with occ though as much warmth as he generates :) i love when he talks about maybe surfing goofy would straighten you out, and kind of demonstrates.
Geezers! That was Jensen Beach, closer to Sebastian than to "Deerfield", where Occy fired a warning shot... and it was more like "medium sized", until the final day. Speaking of Sebastian, though, and of Kelly's wave pool... for god's sake build something to wedge the takeoff at that thing... so that it lends itself to a full-on bottom turn, and the performance possibilities that'd provide. Make it a force multiplier like First Peak used to be, and you'll have a real performance wave. There already is a Rincon, that gets bigger... but there is no longer an original First Peak, and your wave pool usually has more groundswell anyway, so make it happen... at least on any you build in Florida... cuz we still ain't interested in cruising, if it can be avoided.
The state of Israel has the Mediterranean sea from the west & the dead sea from the east - which is gets dry and shrink year by year . it's also the lower place on earth. think of the possibility to run water from the Mediterranean to the dead sea and between of them somewhere in the desert building the biggest wave pool ever ....
Anyone know if Kelly wave pool team is still developing the circular wave pool design? Has that been abandoned or are their plans for a working proto type? How big does a pool design in that configuration need to be? obviously this technology is expensive so I imagine only a handful will exhist, but if you could aford one, how much space do you need for one of these projects?
Hows your vision slater. Most my friends mid 40's have less vision that has to slow your ability a touch.. at your level even 5% means a couple of heat losses..
Damn it.....now I HAVE to try this detox lemon maple syrup and cayenne pepper deal with the liter of salt water in the morning🤮, let you guys know how it goes🤙
Great interview Occ! I know you're a busy man but, MAANNN!! I wish you were on the WSL commentating instead of mr know-it-all, anal retentive Martin potter. I wish there was a link to Slater's diet & his methods of detoxing. I would like to try & do it. I need to lose about 30 lbs. working out is one of the problem but the main problem is what I'm consuming. Can't stop eating Hawaiian, Japanese, Chinese, Mexican, Filipino, & American food (bbq steak, ribs, & chicken)
The simple thing is to eat minimally adulterated food, and lay off the starches, focus on: fundamental animal foods(meat, eggs, milk(non-homogenized), cheese, butter), fresh fruits, greens, non filtered beer, and some salt and seasonings in moderation. And don't overeat.
reckon Kelly, wsl and the surfing industry should make a wave pool that's non profit and every surfer on the planet, starting from the oldest should have a free day of waves. Pay back for decades of hijacking premier surf breaks for their own agenda,
You cut out the rice and got thin, what about the millions of skinny Asians who eat rice for breakfast, lunch and dinner, don't tell me, they're wrong. Man, get real.
I'm a whole food plant based person myself, and not all starches, as I am sure you know, are created equal. Every time I hear someone, even Kelly Slater, say "low fat high carb is bad" I think to myself...ahhh... they don't know.
not all carbs are created equal, the US diet he is referring to are carbs that are more processed, corn syrup, candy, sweets, fruit snacks, etc....(processed, high glycemic index, etc...) The people you are talking about are skinny because of calorie deficiency as well, not just low fat diet, usually NOT as lazy as the average American as well. I still believe in a moderation in all things. Carbs I get from fruits and veggies. Small portions of pro/fat via meats.
I get another 2 min in to this video and you can see the awkward conversations and fake bullshit laughs...poor occy, having to deal with kelley for that long
man...it gets harder and harder to listen to Kelly....he always wants to talk non stop even when he's the guest...and he also acts like a knowledge god and has to explain stuff in boring, pointless and long winded way possible
I reckon he's awesome to listen to. In his mid forties, still madly passionate about anything and everything to do with surfing. You wouldn't find him sitting on his ass writing hater comments on RUclips.

Well yeah they've known each other for 30 plus years
Sat on the wall at Kalk Bay in 1986 and watched Occy tear it to pieces, I was 12! The next 3 years I was Occy in every surf :) Great podcast long live the Kings
Congrats Occ, lovin this cast, when you get into the swing of this these sessions are gonna become legendary, best Kelly interview for years.
These interviews are amazing, it's almost like being present to a chat between great surfers that they would have privately. Keep this up please.
Kelly it is always very interesting to see how the "Champ" thinks! All the success you have had and you are still able to keep your mind and karma clean and free allowing you to maintain and continue in your success. You are a great lesson in what to do!
Great work Joel Parkinson. Great set up.Great interview Occ, backstage pass to everyone, anywhere anytime. All time.
Congrats Occy, Billabong & the person who created/green lighted the Occ podcast interviews. MY TWO FAVORITE SURFER DUDES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! TOTALLY AWESOME DUDES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
No doubt. Throw Gerry Lopez in there too
You guys are very cool Surf Brothers! Interesting on the food & diet Kelly! Take care of your back. Occ love your interviews! Occ it is fantastic how you pull the entire Surf community together through all of your interviews! Billabong is lucky to have you!

Thumbs up if Kelly should ride goofy foot for 2 months
" go occy☆~! " "go kelly☆~! "

Good stuff. Kelly is always sharp. Really diggin' the Occ-Cast. Damn, I have the same back issues - typical for a surfer i guess.

What's up guys! Nice interview
This was for real, these two Bruh know their game in da water,, Wish I surfed like 1/10 of what these two can do..
Yeah the Occ makes slatz seem comfortable laid back to nice for slater to be rude to, mad interview. Im Aussie they are my two favourite surfers. 🙏✌️😁
Great Interview Occy! Really nice insight. Never heard of the master cleanse diet before and I'm due a cleanse so might check that out!
Occy is a legend dude
Saw Occy surf at the Wave Wizard Challenge in Singer Island Florida. I think it was 1984 or 1985.
They had to use a boat to make the waves for the contest.
Amazing interview with God. Thanks Occy
Kelly's at the top of his game. Maybe not being world champ, but being himself. Maybe he's finally found the perfect wave, by making it.
Was on King Island recently and there's a surfboard in the cafe there signed by Kelly. Im guessing Kelly is a regular visitor there considering the waves are smoking.👌
One of the most underrated surfers alive
So, Kelly, when ya' gonna do a TED Talk?
He should do a ted talk exclusively on his wave pool. Good idea.
TED is basically Scientology lite at this point, so yea lets not
Good comments on bouancy vs. hydroplaning...wave pool .
Holy shit occy looks beast for 50. Fair effort man. Love his style too...so elegant and beautiful
Occy your surfing maldives 4 seasons twin fin win was wsl quality.
Occy is so freakin cute. Love these.
Holy crap Kelly's memory of surf contests is off the charts.
I swear he has total recall.
I like how Kelly tells Oc what contest he was in and what Oc placed.
Some sort of electronic sensors on the surfers(and most likely boards) that record movement could be used to judge waves Kelly?
18:07 Occ: ‘You’ve gotta be the most adverse surfer in the world...’
Kelly: *what the hell did he just call me?*
Slats breaking out the Dr. Scott McCranels reference..old school
2 greats! (a few less interruptions of the most interesting interview in all of sports would be nice)
Where can we see the footage of Kelly seeing the pool for the first time? Thanks in advance!!
Water finds it's level! He knows haha 32:11
Joel Tudor doesn't know what he's talking about! Made my day Kelly
cool
seems like kelly is being kind of chilly/stiff at first, like making it sound like he didn't want to do the interview but occ caught him off guard out in the water, then when occ asks him if he wants good results, says sarcastically "no". seems like it too him awhile to thaw out. i think it would be hard to stay cold with occ though as much warmth as he generates :) i love when he talks about maybe surfing goofy would straighten you out, and kind of demonstrates.
Awesome interview. I wonder if Kelly has read Dr. McDougall's "The Starch Solution"? or has experimented with the 80/10/10 diet?
Danny Davis started snowboarding switch, ALL DAY! Next thing in surfing? Haha
Song in the intro?
Occ I wish you were doing these interviews when Andy was here, he would have been full of fun and laughs with you!
Yew Kelly
Occy,!!!!!!!!!!!!
love the comment about having kids to kelly. He has so much money and his girlfriend has followed him around for years. Step up Kelly.

Occy you should interview Cheyenne Please!

I'm there dude

And why is Italo saying that he wants to surf the ranch more if he is a world champ? He is supposed to surf it every time he wants
Hows your vision slater. Most my friends mid 40's have less vision that has to slow your ability a touch.. at your level even 5% means a couple of heat losses..
Next up Jamie o Brien from North shore if Oahu, stay psyched
Occy you look 35!
Damn it.....now I HAVE to try this detox lemon maple syrup and cayenne pepper deal with the liter of salt water in the morning🤮, let you guys know how it goes🤙
John what's it good for ? Hangover ?
Great interview Occ! I know you're a busy man but, MAANNN!! I wish you were on the WSL commentating instead of mr know-it-all, anal retentive Martin potter.

Martin has style and self control, ...he's just humble, but it's out of respect for others.
The simple thing is to eat minimally adulterated food, and lay off the starches, focus on:
fundamental animal foods(meat, eggs, milk(non-homogenized), cheese, butter), fresh fruits, greens, non filtered beer, and some salt and seasonings in moderation. And don't overeat.
Smelly Gator's switch foot is achieved digitally in a post production fashion. Smooth liar ay?
& hey....I paid for that wave pool!
holy crap i had to check that my setting weren't at 1.25 speed... Kelly talks so quickly
Kelly is so real about it all... Bless Occy , but slow down a bit and be a bit more real about it...
reckon Kelly, wsl and the surfing industry should make a wave pool that's non profit and every surfer on the planet, starting from the oldest should have a free day of waves. Pay back for decades of hijacking premier surf breaks for their own agenda,
Man, fuck sake Occy, Slater knows your heats in more details than you do. WTF
picks nose shakes hands
You cut out the rice and got thin, what about the millions of skinny Asians who eat rice for breakfast, lunch and dinner, don't tell me, they're wrong. Man, get real.
I'm a whole food plant based person myself, and not all starches, as I am sure you know, are created equal. Every time I hear someone, even Kelly Slater, say "low fat high carb is bad" I think to myself...ahhh... they don't know.
Two people can eat an exact diet. One can stay the same size while another grows huge. Genetics plays a part its not all diet.
not all carbs are created equal, the US diet he is referring to are carbs that are more processed, corn syrup, candy, sweets, fruit snacks, etc....(processed, high glycemic index, etc...) The people you are talking about are skinny because of calorie deficiency as well, not just low fat diet, usually NOT as lazy as the average American as well. I thought he seemed smart and articulate. Contrast that with the fletcher podcast I just attempted to watch......
Hhhi
Winner
Why don't you just get some good physio
great interview
