I was at Snapper for 10 days from New Zealand. I was walking out of the surf club and Occy was walking in. Id never seen a pro surfer before in the flesh coming from Wellington.I got a photo of him with me that his son took with my phone. I am guessing a little but from the vibe his son put out moments like that seemed to make him feel real proud in a humble way to call Occy his dad for what hid dad has achieved in life. Awesome stuff!
One of the greats.. no doubt..so humble, followed him since I was a pup. Rabb, MR, TC, JL, Pottz, ST the greats from the mid to late 70's to early 80's.
At 24:21 when Rabbit notices Mark's getting a bit tired and picks up the convo and carries it on through, ...humble mastery for the next minute or two.
So good thanks for the epic memories guys I was a grom in Encinitas in the 80sss saw the both of you at the stubbies then I ran into Kong with Robbie Bain at 7 11 was so stoked
i love these so much. occy facilitates this great flow so that the person interviewed is at ease and natural. and occy has so much knowledge he knows how to ask the right questions and throw in his own color. and he's just a joy to listen to. cool to hear bartholomew talking about being focused on getting barrels at age 61. keep them coming!
What a great interview Occ, Rabbs a classic aint he, I wish he told the story about paddling out at Sunset on a lull one day many years ago, cannot remember who he was with that session but when a set came through it was like 25' and in the zone, scary stuff for a guy from the Goldy I'm sure ........
Rabbit was catching the biggest set waves and the most waves at Snapper on new years day and the following day. He was 60years of age, true legend.....BTW he doesn't share waves and he likes to drop in on others but thats all part of the game when your out at snapper with 100+ surfer
privileged to listen in on these 2 legends. The call on surfing Cloudbreak when it was 20' was dead on though. Leave it to the guys who train all year for it, don't risk the lives of the tour surfers totally out of their element. The surfing world enjoyed a much better show of that crew slaying every wave, with Kelly narrating, everybody's mind's blown. A heat setup would have seen 90% of those all time waves going unridden.
Be great if occy and rabbit set up a masters event or tour so many fantastic surfers still ripping today even 70+ getting tubes. inspiring to see older surfers ripping and stoked . Rabbit's account of Hawaii and those mega swells would definitely sought out the craziest or bravest men from the boys . Another great interview occ
Rabbit is a great ping pong player as well I remember in the 80s at Scott Chandler's house in Carlsbad I played rabbit ping pong him and I had it induce for a long time and I couldn't believe that I actually beat rabbit Bartholomew at ping pong
