- Mark Occhilupo & Rob Machado are two of the greatest goofy footers to have ever taken to the ocean. One is all raw power & personality, the other fluid grace & humility.
Despite the differences in their approach, they’ve both captured the imaginations of generations of surfers around the globe.
In Episode 32 of the Occ-Cast, the two sit down to chat about what it’s like to have kids that surf, discuss the legendary 1995 Pipe Masters, and explore what it feels like to unexpectedly drop off tour. In the words of Rob: “I’d just had a baby and lost my job and my sponsor and was just like, what on earth am I going to do?”
What followed next was one of the best things to ever happen to him as a surfer.

I picked up surfing in my late 20's and Machado was my inspiration. Can't remember why he was my favorite, but he was.
Also, I went to the PipeMasters in 2003 and saw a lot of surfers up close and befriended a few Pro Australian surfers, but when I saw Occy, it was like this aura around him. He definitely has charisma and star quality.
Rob - you are such a true soul - love you! Love that you surf for the love, and that you also prioritize your family (your daughter), over your career...in the moments that matter.

I am 4 generation Culver City born, My parents grew up with Robs uncle Dave and Frogy. Local plumbers. I remember that drive in.
Rob has carved out such a special space within the sport of surfing and in life!! BIG UP!!!

So many good memories listening to him talk about competitively surfing as a kid. I remember doing the CSA's YMCA's WSA's and N.S.S.A.'s. But my favorite contest's were the SDSA's. Those were the best because we were surfing against people like Saxon Boucher, Pat Moss, Justin Postin, Benji & Jason Weatherly just all the local guys who were in Taylor's videos and those contests were so fun we weren't really competing more than having a good time. Also this was at the point before the parking lot at Seaside Reef was paved. It used to be just a dirt parking lot. And the wave on the inside especially at high tide like a 6.0 or higher, Rob used to call it Palisades it was a left that broke in front of the Lifeguard Tower just a little bit South of the outside Peak but the right on the inside was good too so many barrels I can't even count. There were guys like Paul Roach who used to rip on a bodyboard and Jeremy Somerville. I always wonder what happened to those guys. Another sic interview Occy!
It's so good to have a proper sport show focused on the legends we grew up with. And Occy as the host is just perfect match! Good job Billabong!

Great interview. The most interesting part was about when he fell off tour and how he felt about it. Kind of cleared up some misconceptions I had about it. I have always dug Machado's surfing and he came off really well here. Occy does a really good job with these.

Great job Mark first time watching keep it up. Looks like you have another passion. I got a great opportunity to see your unselfishness out at pipe one day. You broke your leash and I paddled your board back out to you. That's when you got in a mini fight with Jim Hogan right before the Pipe Masters. The Hui was getting rid of the people in the lineup and you let me sit there a while longer. Mark Richards and Shawn Thompson and I think it was Tommy Carol were giving you and Hogan a talk about how everyone was watching you and Hogan arguing. It was a life time lesson for me too. Any how keep up the interviews have a great day.

Hey Occy . Great interview mate . I was in the lineup once with Rob , when they had the Billabong Pro at Cabarita . Rabbit made the call and the banks were perfect , with a nice 4ft swell . I was in awe of his take-offs to bottom turn , or speed racing with a quick pump . I learnt a lot as a fellow goofy in that session :)

I saw Rob and Kelly as juniors in the HB contest in the late 80's and I thought Rob was the best surfer by far in the contest, including the mens. He was schalping the lefts on the Southside of the pier. Great memories of a great time in surfing.. Thanks for the memories Rob. Great show Occy.
this guy is such a legend. posters covered my wall of him as a kid. no one surfs like him..... that style. goat for me, hands down.

Agreed. They was so much character on the 80s tour. Your heavies like Potz, Kong and Sunny, JB Gomes. Then you had the golden childs of Curren, Carroll and Occy.
I don’t watch the tour anymore unless they’re streaming pipe masters. My son fills me in on the events and I don’t watch unless it’s a pivotal event or great surf.
I dunno, seems to me the tour lacks the rivalries it used to have. Maybe that’s because I don’t really follow it.
But the tension between Aussies, Hawaiians and the Americans added a dynamic that the tour seems to lack now.

Love that Rob M. Such a wonderful guy. He's been at the top of my shortlist of favorite surfers for at least the last 15 or 20 years. I always enjoy seeing his interviews &:hearing what he has been up to, & what he has to say. I seriously wish he would write a book - a biography or something. I'll bet it would be awesome.

Sick! Fantastic interview. Great to see Machado in this light one of the best so far. Finally a respectful mention of Occ's air which jaw-droppingly, and singlehandedly set a new standard in surfing....still the best and most stylish moment caught on film, intended or not.

What great video from this 2 Icons of surfing. They were talking about a trip they had and they camp. It would be cool to make a new movie with all the 80 and 90s icons which still are on the planet. My first board was a single fin my dad made it a single fin, He found a thruster board with the fins snapped off on the beach he took it home and put an 8 inch black fin in and rebuilt the back end and tinted the back and the nose red. I’ve still got it. I’m 36 now. I was the only kid with a board like it at that age in the 90s

Rob came off a little bitter in the Momentum film about the high 5 deal.
Which didn’t seem like Rob to me-granted I don’t him.
This felt like it cleared the air a bit.
Momentum singles out the high 5 as the beginning of a downward spiral for Rob. Maybe it was, but I don’t think he blames Kelly for that.
Which is how Momentum makes it sound.
All in the name of good drama I guess. Create or push conflict where it doesn’t exist.

I'm an "older kid" surfer and there's 3 brittle old surf mag posters I still have up in my garage from back in the day. You on a Rusty, one of Buttons (r.i.p.) style carving at Ala Moana and one of Ronnie Burns (r.i.p.) at Pipe. Now, I gotta go track me down a Machado poster for good measure. -Stay STOKED boyz!
