  • If you have a larger piece of land as a homesteader, you may find yourself looking into purchasing some sort of equipment to help you manage the property.
Tractors are real workhorses that can usually get any job done, but they come at a high price.
UTV's are generally speaking on the cheaper side, and can even do better on certain jobs when compared with a tractor, but generally they have a shorter list of what they can accomplish.
If you are shopping for your first piece of farm equipment, what option is best for you?
Mike from the Ask Tractor Mike RUclips Channel tries to help us figure out which piece of equipment is best for a homesteader.

I think it all depends on your goals and priorities. I myself, decided to go with a Kawasaki mule first. I have 40 acres to cover and I couldn’t be happier with this decision. I also connected a dump trailer to the utv and it’s doing all the things I need at this point to help me plan and prepare the site for the future. when it’s time to get serious and start building I will start hunting for the tractor or backhoe/loader or bobcat. But that’s 10 years down the road.

Interesting answer. We have a small farm. We have a tractor (with a bucket) and really, the only thing we can do with it that can’t be done with the ATV/UTV is move big haybales. I wish we’d have a UTV instead. Does borrowing/renting attachments for the tractor make thing easier? Yes. But when our tractor isn’t working, we move hay bales with our F150, we mow with a lawn mower, we use a manual post hole digger, etc... it certainly would be nice to have something to throw feed/hay bales, fencing in and get to the other side of the farm faster.

There is another less expensive alternative: a Mini-truck, Japanese or Chinese. They are available with A/C & heat, dump beds that are over 6’ long & cost less than today’s UTV. For specifics search for “mini-trucks”. Tim @ Cliffside Acres

I got an ATV... and a trailer for it... and a trail mower for it... All 3 together are cheaper than a used UTV... The ATV can fit in tighter places than an UTV (including in the bed of my truck) going to get a mini excavator next... probably won't ever need a tractor... (on 27 acres)

Absolutely tractor first!!! If you need to move materials you can buy a trailer or dump cart for the tractor for way less then buying a UTV or ATV. UTV and ATVs are useful to move multiple persons and materials over longer distances in less time then most tractors. So if you have a large property 20 acres or more there's definitely a large benefit to having vehicles like that.

If you look at these points
It is very easy and cheap to rent a tractor for the jobs you need it for.
If you do regenerative farming its actually not that often. There is no tilling or plowing. A towed Brush hog you get 1/2 priced for a atv/utv compared to a compact tractor. If you need to harvest and bale its prohibetively expensive to buy that gear and not bad to get it done by pros per acre, so unless you're a pretty decent sized commercial farm that makes zero sence to get.
The atv/utv dont compact the soil as a tractor does. This makes a tractor often useless in wet conditions.
Delivery trucks have crane with pallet forks and a cheap simple pallet jack truck you can move them as you please, if that is a big concern.
If you look at ridgedale farm on youtube at 25 acres they have no tractor. They run livestock, Sheeps, cows, chickens, and do a lot of vegetables. They do however rent a tractor when they have to, total 100 hours in 5 years.
Now if you want to mimic industrial farming with plowing and tilling i do understand the need for heavier usage of tractor.
A atv/utv pulled backhoe is way cheaper and way more useful than a backhoe on a tractor which is a true pain on the ass to install and remove.
Snowplow is easy to use on a atv/utv as well, spreader, spayer, rake, Tiller, plow seeder even no till drill is available cheaper than for a compact tractor, towed wood chipper/mulcher, log trailer with crane, firewood splitter and you name it. You even get a front loader and 3 point hitch kit for atv, i fail to see the point but its there.
Anyway if a front loader is extremely crucial for life a used farm tractor with one is obtainable cheap. Then you also have something for heavy tractor work for those few occations.
I would rather get an atv/utv and consider a used old farm tractor with front loader. Then you can lift big bags which many compact tractors cannot which saves money on feed, its also heavy and big enough to actually do heavy tractor jobs when you need it. Most of those i personally know Who bought a sub compact changer later to a compact where they then complain about the lack of size and weight to do stuff.
2 wd vs 4 wd on tractor, yes on a compact do get 4wd, but a heavy big wheeled farm tractor i never missed 4wd unless you are really in the ruts. For normal farm work no problem ever. Unless you absolutely must go in the wet and destroy your pastures with a tractor because you dont have and atv/utv.
Anyways good luck with your choices.

We are currently looking for our homestead. It will most likely be 10 or less acres with lots of trees. I think the ATV is probably the way we are going to go!

I think, if I were just starting out and didn't already have a tractor that came with the property I live on, I would have gotten a tractor. But instead, I had a tractor and I still absolutely hate driving it. It's oversized for what I think I need, and that makes it so uncomfortable for me to drive around. So, instead, I got a UTV and mainly use that for things around the farm and also for quickly running out to local shops to buy things. I have a nice slope mower for the areas I need to cut, and the tractor stays parked. Maybe one day, I'll get a smaller tractor, but it's definitely not something I need any time soon.

I have 12 very hilly acres. I was all ready to buy a compact tractor with a FEL, but I’m starting to wonder if a UTV/ATV with accessories might be a better choice due to the terrain. I have areas that are 30-40 degree slope. While I would never traverse these areas with either machine, I’m thinking a ATV/UTV may be safer going up and down. Once I get past the initial drop, the slope isn’t as bad, 15-20 degrees.
    Thoughts appreciated.

Same issue with me. I would love a tractor but I am in Texas Hill Country and it's just too steep for my comfort. I rather flip a UTV over on me.

I live on a mountain and have some areas that are that steep. I ended up with an older, used Power Trac slope mower - it's very weird to drive, but it does so well on steep hills, there's pretty much no risk in ever flipping it because it's so low to the ground, and the seat tilts so that you stay straight. A VenTrac is similar, but has fewer accessories available, iirc. They're not a replacement for everything a tractor can do - that is, if you're baling hay, it's not very useful - but it's got a bucket, a grapple, different types of mowers for brush and grass, an aerator, a tiller, and even more attachments

ATV/UTV has so many accessories that you can get that make it more usable and easier to use and switch out accessories than a tractor. Moving bags of feed, taking the trash to the road...which on our place is a quarter of a mile, moving chicken tractors, carrying electric fence, checking the mail, auger for planting trees, snow blower and so much more and when you do no till, not much need for a tractor and if you do need one, you can rent it for a couple of days...We have a backhoe and it is more useful than a tractor too.

I get that not all homesteads need a tractor but if your homestead warrants both a tractor and a UTV then tractor first is the way to go. At least think twice before you buy UTV versions of tractor implements.

I'd have to agree with the wife on this one. We bought a 5 acre hobby farm and right before that I scored a Ford 9n for cheap. For 3 years I've been using it for most of the work. I have needed to use a trailer in tow in order to further my carrying capacity but that worked just fine. For what the UTVs are going for these days there's no way I can justify buying one, at this point for me it would be a total luxury/toy item.

What about the Bobcat 3600, Polaris Brutus and Kubota RTV? They got the option of a front PTO with attachments. They are good for light duty work.

Everybody here said w/ no hesitation tractor and other attachments or other farm equipment comes 1st! As far as I'm concerned UTV's and ATV's are mainly toys! Only thing I can think of that ATV's are better at than tractors is herding livestock or going threw brush trying to turn a renegade run away around.

  • @arnoldromppai5395

to me it is tractor hands down, unless you have a back that will never hurt, to me an ATV OR UTV is nothing but a toy,, you have no need to fly at 60 mph.. and for me i need what i use to have a cab tractor with good heat, not nice sitting in the open in 40 to 50 below with a drive way 1800 feet long and 25 feet wide in 3 to 7 feet of snow and 40 mph winds

Agreed. I bought a tractor first, but recently bought a Kubota RTV...not a toy in any sense compared to most UTVs, but still kinda "toyish". But for rotational grass-based farming a UTV is very helpful for the back whereas putting those hours on the tractor would be silly--hauling portable electric netting. My back and shoulders are much happier now that I don't have to haul water and feed out to the livestock.
