  • German Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck says a decision on sending Germany's Leopard main battle tank to Ukraine will be easier if the US also sends equivalent vehicles to the war zone. He speaks with Francine Lacqua on "Bloomberg Surveillance Early Edition" on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum's annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland.

Russia put missiles in Cuba because the US already had missiles in Turkey, just a short flight from Moscow. Russia removed their missiles on the condition that the US remove theirs as well (which they did, but did not publicize, so as to save face.) Russia kinda had a good reason for that particular insanity... Although Castro might not have been the best choice for their "buddy."
That said, Russia is still completely in the wrong for invading Ukraine. The two situations don't really compare. This is just a land grab, and Putin is a gangster.

Ukraine must fight a hard battle and win this war alone. It's Ukraine's destiny. No question the west can obliterate Russia in a month, but nothing good will come out of that and losses on each side will be much higher. Russia must lose this war to Ukraine ALONE, without fighting NATO troops, permanently recognize failures of it's top-down leadership and escape the cycle of blaming the West for all of it's misfortunes/losses and finally become a civilized, democratic country. Unless you want another wave of revanchism in 30-50 years and other wave of attack/craziness, then by all means start World War III, bomb Russian territory, walk NATO troops into Moscow, install another puppet pseudo-democratic government. That would be insanely stupid. Russia can be an amazing long-term ally against China. We need it. Don't give it reasons to stay an angry, shady, vengeful resource-economy satellite forever.

He’s a Zionist bastard. Nobody will win this war. Eventually it will escalate into WW and from there almost immediately go nuclear. As long as America and its crony allies support Ukraine by not just sending small arms but large armament it will indeed come to a point where Russia makes a major chess move and destroys Ukraine or the US and NATO send major arms and Russia takes it as a declaration of war and it goes nuclear. These are the only outcomes. Nobody is going to back down.

You cannot fight a war if you are afraid to beat the opponent. To continue to supposedly support Ukraine, but only give them enough to maybe hold Russia from taking over, but allows Russia to continue to mount offensives and inflict damage to Ukraine is not really support at all. It must be remembered that Putin started this war and could have negociated a settlement any time. It is ludicrious to keep given Ukraine just enough to fight but not enough to win. For the Russian people to tire of the war, they need to know they are in a war. There has been several interviews in Moscow who didn't even realize they were at war.

That same mentality got us into Iraq, Afghanistan and Vietnam. In Vietnam, after Tet, the US government decided the war needed to be more of a Vietnamese effort. They called it "Vietnamization." So we were dependent on the South Vietnamese to fight and die for a profoundly corrupt government. This failed miserably, but we again did the exact same thing in Afghanistan. Now Ukraine? I wish Ukraine was different, but it's not. It's easy to point to the injustice of what Putin is doing. He is a war criminal. But anyone who thinks we should be involved doesn't understand the history of that conflict.
There is a sizable population of people in Crimea who support what Putin is doing. The conflict is centuries old.
In 1962 the US made it very clear that we would never tolerate Soviet missiles in Cuba. Now, there are NATO missiles in Poland, and Ukrainian membership has been discussed for the last 30 years. People expect the Russians to tolerate what we never would.
