  • The Genesis GV80 is the new kid on the SUV block. It's aiming high and looking to take on the likes of BMW, Audi and the Mercedes-Benz GLE450 4MATIC. So how does the GV80 compare against the GLE 450 yardstick?
The Genesis GV80 is available with two engines. Entry level models are equipped with a 2.5L turbocharged 4-cylinder while upper trims have a 3.5L twin-turbocharged V6. The 2.5L engine produces 300 hp and 311 lb-ft of torque (224 kW & 422 Nm) while the twin-turbocharged V6 produces 375 hp & 390 lb-ft of torque (280 kW & 529 Nm). This demo vehicle had the V6 engine.
This 2nd generation GLE is available with a few engine options. The base GLE 350 comes with a 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder, the higher AMG models are equipped with a mild-hybrid inline-6 & a twin-turbo mild-hybrid V8 in the GLE 53 AMG & GLE 63 AMG respectively. This GLE 450 is equipped with a slightly less powerful version of the 3.0L inline-6 mild-hybrid but it still packs a pretty good punch. The engine produces 362 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque on its own. The 48-volt mild-hybrid system assists it by momentarily providing an additional 21 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque when accelerating.
The 2021 Genesis GV80 starts at $64,500 CAD ($48,900 USD). This top spec Prestige trim will cost you $85,000 CAD ($65,550 USD). For the 2022 Genesis GV80 model year, all trim levels except for the 3.5 Advanced have gone up in pricing by $500 CAD. The 3.5 Advanced actually went down from $80,000 CAD to $77,000 CAD.
The Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 4MATIC 2022 starts at $80,600 CAD ($63,500 USD). The 2022 GLE 450 can still be equipped with a lot of packages and stand alone options that will easily raise the price to around the $110,000 CAD mark.

I have a 2021 GV80 Prestige. It is a little over a month old. The GLE and X5 are both really good cars. The issue for me was--the overall price delta for the equivalently optioned car, as you mention is huge.
Having a BMW or Mercedes out of warranty is extremely risky, as most people know and I am not sure you mentioned this, but Genesis offers a far longer standard warranty, coupled with lower expected repair costs in general. The GV is also subjectively better looking and more unique than either of them (that is certainly debatable). It is an exceptionally comfortable and relaxing car to drive, a phenomenal highway cruiser, has arguably better autonomous driving tech (I tested the BMW but could not find a GLE with that option to try) and although the 22' wheels do make driving on badly paved roads a bit more jiggly, it is still better than the RX350 i came out of.

I noticed you didn't include in your review the Genesis 6year/100,000 mile POWERTRAIN warranty, or the included 3 year/30,000 mile no cost maintenance where they pick up and drop off your car from any location. Someone posted: "most Mercedes owners would not even consider looking at a Genesis." Who do you think are buying the GV80? It is mostly Mercedes, BMW, and Audi owners. My wife and I sold her X5 and replaced it with a Tesla. I'm moving from my GLS to the GV80 which is scheduled for delivery next month. His GLE 450 has also been to the shop 4 times in less than a year whereas I haven't been to the shop at all. Don't get me wrong, the ambient lighting and infotainment graphics are better in the GLE 450, but outside of that, nothing is far and away outclassing the GV80. Let me not forget, his GLE was $18K more than my GV80.

Why didn't you compare a true apples to apples comparison? For instance a head to head comparison of what you get for 65k or 70k from both manufacturers? Instead of comparing a loaded MB to the mid equipped GV80. I have both vehicles, as well as a Velar and just traded X5. I'm very familiar with all of these vehicles and I found your review lacking in fine detailed comparison. Thanks for the effort though.

    • @MGReviewsBlog
      @MGReviewsBlog  2 года назад +4

Because I don't go around to different dealerships to try to find similarly equipped vehicles. I get these cars directly from the manufacturers and they get to decide how the cars are optioned. All of the auto reviewers that get their cars from the manufacturers are the same.
The GLE was not fully loaded, it was missing a few options but the GV80 was fully loaded.
I'm not going to do a nit pick, detailed type of video because then it would be over 30 minutes long. I know from my analytics and from working with other channels that most people don't watch a video in its entirety and the average viewing duration is 4-7 minutes. So I just want to get the main points across. I do have a few more details in my written reviews of these cars and many others (links in description) but I'm not going to cater my videos to satisfy everyone's needs. That's impossible. Sorry that you feel disappointed but that's why there are so many people reviewing cars so that you, the consumer, can get different opinions about the same vehicle and make an informed judgement based on multiple sources, not just one.

Even bringing Genesis and Mercedes in one sentence is a crime against humanity. Genesis is not a luxury brand. Full stop.

Why don't you think that Genesis isn't a luxury brand? I'm not saying that it's quite on par yet with Mercedes but they're very close.

    GV80 crashes.
If you don't mind having your legs broken, go ahead and buy it.
If you already bought one keep it, in a few years, it'll become dirt cheap.

It's better not causing the accident than protect you from becoming dead when it happens..
I drive a cheapest Toyota(terrorist truck), never had to worry about an accident.
