  • In this video we start out in Lake Havasu, Arizona. I get the motorcycle out for a ride and go swimming in the lake. Then I drive all the way to my hometown of San Diego, California. I head to the coast to check out my old stomping grounds. I also attempt sleeping in my van on a public street. Will it go okay?
    Thank you for being here.
*My name is Brian. I started living full time in a self built camper van in 2014 in my hometown of San Diego, CA. I hit the road full-time in 2015 to pursue seasonal work and travel around the U.S. I find free camping on public land and enjoy photography, hiking, biking, and kayaking in nature. Join me on my adventures.
    Thanks for watching!

Love it! Back to the roots. I started watching in late 2016 and went back to the beginning to get caught up. It was a sad day when I didn't have a library of new AdventureVanMan videos to watch. You were actually the first RUclips creator I did that for. I'm so grateful you're still making videos. Still my #1 favorite. I love your mission, authenticity, and honesty. Have a great season in Alaska. ✌️

Used Ford 2012 van in San Diego goes for $26,000 and $7 gal. gas. Wow, times have sure changed! Sad to see You Tubers make one video about a battery equal to a season of labor in Alaska. Being from San Diego now in Austin I know where all the parking spots are on side streets near Condos, and Hospitals! Also the beach near Princess resort is open to the public and always empty. Good morning Brian. Like most folks in the comments l have been watching ur videos for awhile. While watching the video I flashed back to 1980-82 when I was living in my vw camper. I had a full time job in Anaheim, CA and after work would drive to Huntington Beach to hang out for the evening. At night would drive to a industrial area to sleep. The main problem was showering, luckily I had some friends that let me shower at their place a couple times a week. Back then there was was no #van life. It was you were "out on the bum" as in being a hobo. Well 40 yrs later back "on the bum". Thankfully I've got a bigger rig now, still no shower 😊 Vaya con dios

I got a receiver hitch fabricated for my step van in S. Dakota last week. I had them make it strong enough for a motorcycle if I decided to change from an E-bike. While I was waiting I walked over to Black Hills Motorsports where they had a KLX 230 dual sport sitting there....

I think the 4 x 6 trailer would not be what you would be happy with. First of all you will have problems backing the trailer, cannot see it in your mirrors, even driving down the road. I would get a 5 x 8 at least you can see the wheels on the trailer when backing and going down the road. And also about 5.5 inches tall. You will not notice the difference in fuel usage pulling it than the 4 x 6. Your truck will block the wind when pulling and the weight difference is very little. Something to remember is the longer the trailer the easier to back up. I have had a 4 x 8 and sold it after one trip. I now have a 5 x8 and a 6 x 8 trailer I use behind my RV and sometimes I wish I had got one of these 10 ft long. Just some thoughts of mine.. A person told me if you are going to buy a trailer always get one size bigger than you think you need and you will not regret it.

Nice camping spot. Dang that steak sandwich looks good :) Van update: Our van crapped out in our yard, could have been worse, we were not stuck on the road somewhere, so I had it towed to Aamco for possible transmission replace or rebuild, and we will see if there are other issues. We knew it was a gamble, but I don't feel defeated yet, in fact if we have to replace the drive train, its not so bad because we will know its fresh and hopefully working properly. I lived in San Diego between 1974 to 1978. Lived in Mission Hills working at Mercy Hospital. Loved being in the area but, like it better living in Sonoma county. Enjoy your next adventure!

That's just amazing to see a Lone Tree on that mountain. It is so dry out here. I'm from Phoenix

You need to get out more. You do realize that Phoenix is surrounded by lakes on its north side, right?!?!
You have 4 huge lakes within an hour, no matter where in Phoenix you live

Yep. Diesel is $6.57 a gallon here in SoCal. Tough on a retiree's income but I just budget and have to give up some extras. Good luck, Brian! Take care! Love the videos!

It’s reassuring to see there’s a bit of water in the Colorado River! I wonder if those sandbanks are usual…

I just picked up a 6x10 trailer last month. Carries my KLR650 (I rode it to your camp in Quartzsite last winter) and all my tools and motorcycle gear. Only issue with a small trailer is it’s really hard to back up. One small mistake and it jackknifes. Mines a good size, though. I feel I don’t need a V-nose because my van pushes all the wind out of the way before it hits the trailer.

Loved San Diego. Lived there for several years and I lived in Carlsbad for 4 years. I left CA two months after Gavin Newsom took over.

There a lot of negative aspects to CA, but the lifestyle and weather can't be beat! Spent many wonderful years while serving in the Navy in SD. Safe travels Brian and good luck up north!

That little trailer makes a lot of sense since your motorcycle won’t fit inside. It could also hold your tools!

I drove our van over to San Diego a while back to pick up my Wife at the Airport at 11:00PM. Too late to drive back to Yuma so scouted overnight spots. Found a number of parking spots on Harbor Island....lovely view of the city skyline but a lot of helicopter noise from across the bay on Coronado. Great overnight spot anyway. Signed, "4 hour parking from 8:00am to 10:00pm" if I recall.
But I'm sure you know of those spots. We lived in Leucadia for a couple years and were glad to go back home to Montana. City life was OK for a short while but not for us!
Montana for the Summer and Arizona for the Winter.

Been following you about six years, but I looked back at your earlier videos talking about the Dolphin, etc. I suspect that many folks, like me, are slogging through a traditional life plan with mortgages and all that, and we look to you for inspiration and a guide to how we might approach retirement. Thanks as always for sharing.

Me too. Since early days. You inspired me to live in my business storage unit for a full year before exiting California. I worked 12 hours and backed my truck in and closed the 10 foot door.
Slept in a covered cargo trailer in the unit. You are right. The best days of our life .
