This was so helpful! Why didn’t I look for this before reading the polyurethane can and the Andersen instructions?! I was reluctant to remove the sashes so I was careful. I used #0000 steel wool and a tack cloth on the bare wood followed by Minwax oil based stain, wiped off after 15 minutes. Today I applied one coat of UV oil based poly with a Purdy brush. The humidity level is high so the drying time is lengthened. The surface does not feel smooth- will the light sanding take care of that? And tomorrow morning I’m getting a respirator 😮. Thanks again for this informative video.
Thanks for the video. Great instruction.
One question: how do you get the poly off the glass at the end? I am using water based poly. Thanks!
This is an excellent video - great information! Thank you!!!
What about cleaning the new windows after stain and poly. Everyone shows using razor blades but I'm concerned about scratching the glass...? Please advise. Thanks! Nice job on your video!
How long do you wait from last coat till install? I have side sliders (Andersen 400 series). Dont want sticking from sash to window frame.
Depends on the coating, drying temps, etc., but at least 2-3 days.
On double hung wood windows do you stain and paint the side of the window that slides against the jamb? It looked like you sealed like a half inch over the edge
Would you do a video on maintaining the application of polyurethane to wood awning windows (those which cannot be disassembled), and what devices one might use to achieve this project. Thank you.
Your comment re: the need to poly between the wood and the glass is most appreciated.
The best way to maintain a polyurethane finish on wooden windows it to try and manage the amount of moisture condensing on them. That leads to finish breakdown and sometimes mildew. This can be tough to do since it generally involves the overall building envelope, but constant moisture is the number one thing is that ruins these finishes.
Where do you get the brush you're using on the window?
My local Ben Moore retailer - any decent paint store will have something comparable.
