Mistakes I've Made: An Honest Look at Nearly 4 Decades of Reptile Keeping

  • This is a video that has taken quite a while to make. I've found there are so many channels out there that make reptile keeping look like all unicorns and rainbows. Often, "the best" somethings are shown off, success after success are boasted about, or the "very first" something is being shown.
    While I too like to tell positive stories and introduce people to rare species, I thought an honest look into the learning curve that shaped my current state of reptile keeping would be a unique, raw view rarely presented on RUclips. In order to appreciate how the animals thrive under my current stewardship, it's important to consider the large shelf full of past failures that serve as a reminder of what it took to get to this point.
    It is important to remember that even though it is a difficult pill to swallow, failure is a necessary part of growth. It is incumbent upon each of us to take these failures and turn them into lessons from which we grow. We also must remember, this cycle is ongoing and while we may never achieve perfection in our pursuits, we should strive to offer the best care and continuously refine our keeping techniques as our understanding of animals grows.

    Thank you for sharing your mistakes. Putting yourself out there makes u vulnerable. But it shows your passion bc it’s not about u, it’s about the tortoises. U obviously care about our torts to help us avoid some mistakes we might have made. Great video!

    Wow. Amazing video. I have been similarly working with tegus for 10 years, and I have lost quite a few (recently two of my females died from a bad brumation). But the things I've learned were invaluable. Reptile keeping isn't dogs and cats. There are so many things we need to learn on our own. I have never seen anyone put themselves out there like that. I respect you alot for that. We all have had these things happen but no one talks about it.

    You may have lost a few but you are definitely saving many more with this video. Thanks for the video

    Great video Jason...there is so much group think in the reptile world, especially on social media. We all need to keep getting better. Critical thinking and constant evaluation of what we think is true will be the only way we can take the best care of our Chelonians.

      I agree continual refinement is the message I try to convey. That and check your sources, the internet is full of misguided and bad ideas.

    Great video, really informative! The only thing missing is information about that last little guy (between the star and the spider) and what happened to him/her.

      You are not mistaken and good eye! I did record a little bit about her but as I was editing this video was a bit long so her story was cut. I did however make an entire video on her life and cause of death. Look for the video titled "Goodbye Valentine."

      I was an aircraft mechanic (primarily) in the US Air Force for 22 years. During that time, having a steady job allowed me to pursue an education path that I wanted, my bachelors is in Science Education; if not for a dispute with the school over credits and last minute changes to their degree plans I would have a second BS specifically in biology. I've also been able to work part time as a professor for two colleges now.

    Great video very informative making me think I should separate my leopard tortoises and Texas tortoise have been together since birth

    • @TheArcticReptileRanch
      @TheArcticReptileRanch  3 года назад +1

      Having been together since birth, and likely both being captive bred(maybe?), the chances for zoonotic transmission are greatly reduced as they are less likely to have any diseases to pass around. In recent years I've read a lot of similar stories to mine and it seems when this happens the effects are very fast and collections suffer pretty swiftly. I'm still not a fan of mixing species, but it seems to work for some people.

    Hey I am living in India and I am going to buy a indian Star tortoises it's necessary to keep UVB light in my tortoise enclosure if yes can you tell me which bulb should l buy ??

    • @TheArcticReptileRanch
      @TheArcticReptileRanch  3 года назад

      While I don't know what brands are available in India, I can recommend a type of UV bulb. Look for a T5HO style of bulb. It is a long, thin fluorescent bulb. T* bulbs are similar but have much lower output and need to be unpractically closer to be effective. As Shirley mentioned, I have made videos on this subject, both the science behind UV annnnd testing different types and brands of bulbs.

    • @ShirleyFraserTX

      He made several videos about lights in past years, just look through his channel. If your new tortoise will not get regular natural sunshine, then yes you need UVB light. Good luck!
