  • The heat in Arizona is unreal. Sure, I have experienced hotter; deployments to the Middle East before I retired from the Air Force taught me what really hot was. Over there I had airmen and aircraft to take care of, but the airmen were well trained and mostly self sufficient, back here my tortoises depend on me for survival. Taking cues from my tortoises, my care taking times are the hours just after dawn, before it reaches the upper 90s & 100s. This is a video of one of my normal mornings, prepping some fresh veggies, cleaning up some paddocks, and making sure everyone has the water they'll need to stay hydrated through these long, hot, summer days.

I KNOW!!! when we arrived in AZ they had just crested the 20lb mark and around 16 inches SCL. Next month will be 2 years down here and this week's weigh-in had them both over 65 lbs and they are around 22 or 23 inches SCL!

Hi, may I ask what the name of the bush in your Chaco tortoise enclosure? I am interested to perhaps plant them in my enclosure as well.

Hello turtles How do you manage temperature in winter?

The large barn and the big brown box are insulated and have heaters in them. For the species that I have yet to make heated accommodations for, I bring them into enclosures inside my house during cold spells and on nights below 65F.

love the video 😊 was wondering if i could ask a question, i have baby leopard and sometimes he has black around his mouth some days he doesn't ? and also i have an another leopard being delivered on the 6th of August how long should I keep them apart? thanks for the video's i am learning so much from watching them 😊

The black around its mouth sounds like it is eating its own feces. When females lay eggs the often leave feces in the nest. This ends up being their first meal and helps transfer microbes and kickstart the gut biome. Outside of the initial nest, this is aberrant behavior(though not uncommon). Look at the content and amount you're feeding; it may be deficient in nutrition or amount.
As for keeping them together, generally tortoises seem to not do well in pairs. There are tons of exceptions especially when adequate space and visual barriers are present. Compatibility of new tortoises also depends on size difference. It sounds like you plan to put a small one with another small one so I wouldn't think it would be an issue.

Hello i have a question I am from Korea Centrochelys sulcata kiugo issseubnida Flooring Plantation Soil sayonghago issseubnida When the ground turtle eats vegetables, is it okay to eat the flooring soil as well? Baby I'm not sure you understood English incorrectly😂

When I eat vegetables, I'm worried because I also eat soil.

Depending on the type of substrate, ingestion can be benign or dangerous. I use substrates that are heavy on bio-matter and mostly digestible. Substrates like sand or dry dirt heavy in silicates is less idea and has been known to cause impaction over time. Another aspects that drive my choice to put food on the ground is that I have spent a lot of time actually observing them; the tortoises are very picky in what the pickup with their mouths, rarely getting any substrate; I've watched large tortoises pick a single blade of hay out of a mulch. That has been my experience, I would imagine there are some tortoises less careful out there.
