The problem with nostalgia is we only remember the good things, and not the utter shit surrounding it. The 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s had LOTS of shit. @@cjdr.4145 Even most of the crappy films from the 80s and 90s were more watchable than the cringeworthy garbage being pumped out by Hollywood today. Maybe because most of what is churned out now are just crappy remakes of those 80s and 90s films but lack anything of what made them good in the first place.
Its fan boy cinema. Fan films are well... shit. So now you have fan films backed by Hollywood money, which makes for expensive blockbuster... shit. These are the films made by people who love the brand. Story, characters, worlds are meaningless to them they just love the brand. Its star wars/ghostbusters/Indiana/predator etc etc its always good no matter what. When the reality is well no it isn't. These are the people who clap in the cinema when they repeat a line from the original typically without any context or reason other than it was in the original. Who gush about how much they felt it when X happened even when X was so contrived it was almost laughable or pointless. The people who think being a fan of some franchise is a replacement for having an actual personality. Typically its best just to ignore it an enjoy the films of old as they were un-tarnished by a bunch of bad fan fiction. Movies are basically dead at this point, its just churn out content now quantity over quality.
Must be, all the big movies are remakes or reimagined versions of those old movies. I mean, someone name an original movie from the last six years that will still be important 30 years from now.
Predictions: • It will make a billion dollars purely on brand recognition. • The professional critics will be either bribed or threatened to give it glowing reviews while its audience score on Rotten Tomatoes floats between 50 and 60%. • They will kill off Indiana Jones in the dumbest way possible but idiots on Twitter will praise it for being "emotional" and say shit like "this should be taught in film schools." • Knowing they can't make any sequels without Harrison Ford, they will start making prequels or spin-offs with Indiana Jones played by a younger actor and they will flop horribly, but we won't know how bad they're really doing because they will be exclusive to Disney+ and they won't publish their numbers.

Indiana Jones *IS* Harrison Ford and only him, the silhouette in the sunset, adventure on the horizon and a fedora on his head. No other man or woman could pull off what Ford did, same with Solo, keep em as is and let them go on into legend.
I don't know that I agree. I'd like to see other actors in the role, like James Bond does. Not that Ford isn't amazing obviously. But I feel the character can have some unique dimensions with other actors.
Thankfully, there are always new franchises to take their place. There are still good people in the world trying to make the right thing. Not so much in movies tho, i've been gaming almost exclusively these last few years.
What I loved about Indiana Jones, is the fact he was more than just an action hero, he was also an academic, Indy used his intellect to figure out puzzles, remembering ancient history, and solving problems, that requires wits rather than force. I would rather have another academic action hero, instead of Indiana Jones, he as good for his time, so it's about time Indy enjoys his retirement.

We've reached a new era where we have the ability to review movies in fine detail before they even start filming simply by looking at the production, directing, writing, and casting credits.
Disney won't allow that. Even after Harrison Ford is no longer with us, they will reboot the franchise. Then when that fails, they will wait a few years and reboot again. You know the mess that is the Terminator franchise with constant hard and soft reboots that just make thing worse? That's the destiny of every popular, nostalgic franchise.

We really are missing a new generation of action stars aren't we? Seems all the old school action leads are still at it because there's no one to replace them. People were looking at Idris Elba as a new Bond but he's already on the edge of 50... Is that seriously the best we've got? I know this is a tangent rant but I really think there's a dire lack of younger actors that actually have charisma... But why? My money is on them all being manufactured these days and they get their break without ever actually having hard times and developing a personality... They're all just generic and boring for lack of a better description.

You're spot on on this one. Clint Eastwood is going to be 93. He is still making films. But he stopped being Dirty Harry in his 50s. And he didn't play Philo Beddoe after the second Any Which Way film. He has always played characters that reflected his age and the frailties that come with aging. That's class. Why Ford is agreeing to play Indiana Jones again is a mystery.
Kingdom of the Crystal skull was the final movie. It happened. It's canon. Stop denying that it happened. At least it was more respectful what came before, unlike the sequel trilogy.

I have a theory that Kennedy is upset that her brother used to watch movies that she didn't like. So now she's destroying them as a form of petty vengeance.
I think it's deeper than that. People like her seem to have a philosophy that human beings are blank slates entirely malleable to cultural messaging, because everything is a social construction. So you can program people with whatever you want and the hypothesis is that they'll bend because they have no inherent biological agency which fights back. And when she's proven wrong, and we reject her movies, it's easier to just write us off as racists than abandon her hypothesis, whereby she'd have to admit to herself the scary idea that maybe men and women have a pre-established essence.

They really gutted it of any depth. The new trilogy is so splattershot that it's hard to even call it a trilogy. It's shocking. Should've just made a Thrawn trilogy, instead.

@Numpteez IMHO that means nothing, I like Logan and Ford v Ferrari, but to bring in another great director as an example: Ridley Scott also did a bunch of great movies like Alien, Gladiator, The Martian etc. but also some mediocre to bad movies like Prometheus, Alien Covenant or The Counselor. And Mangold also did Knight & Day, that wasn't a really bad but very average action flick and Tom Cruise got enough movies with that main character, Mission: Impossible (that became better and better after Ghost Protocol), Jack Reacher and some single installments...
I'm still of the belief that at 78, and Indiana Jones being born in 1899, that it would be more interesting to watch Dr. Jones take some time to go to the cinema and say, "Who is that handsome devil on the screen right now?" The walk out of the cinema with Star Wars on the marquee.
The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull wasn't that bad. As long as you stop watching the movie when they hit the temple, it's actually pretty good. Most of the whining comes from people that haven't watched the previous movies. If they did, they didn't think about how ridiculous it was that Indy could survive a multi-thousand mile journey on the outside of a submarine without dying from dehydration or exposure. Or, the fact that he forgets about supernatural powers after The Temple of Doom so that when he starts Raider's of the Lost Ark he suddenly no longer believes in the magic that he previously saw in India. The main issue with the Crystal Skull was that they didn't bother to set up the finale properly. There were no hints in the lead up that they would be dealing with an interdimensional traveler rather than an alien. An outright alien would have been a tad bit of a stretch as Indy usually deals with supernatural powers, but not unreasonable.
The best part about you is the fact that you are able to effortlessly explain your grievances without rambling for an additional 30 minutes. Very well put and well spoken.

But i honestly don't care much anymore. I won't watch indie 5 in the cinema and if more people simply would do that, they maybe would stop shitting all over beloved franchices. KK was given a license, or two, to print money, and promptly shredded them. Also remember, Disney absolutely butchered "John Carter of Mars" so badly that no follow on movies have been made. Although in Disney's defense, they were ABSOLUTELY the WRONG company to try to make those films, because per the source material (books) John Carter was nude from the first chapter of the first book until the seventh chapter, as well as other Barsoomians (Red, Green, White, & Black) being nude, or nearly nude through out the books. When John Carter meets his future bride, both prisoners of the Green Men of Mars, she is described as being nude, wearing only silks & harnesses. With the amount of nudity or near nudity in the source material, any true representation of it would require a film to be rated "R", something Disney doesn't do too often.

When Disney was being run by creative people, not accountants, it worked within a capitalist system and was renowned worldwide for the quality of it's product. These included cartoon and live action films that you might have heard of Sleeping Beauty? Alice in Wonderland? Jungle Book? 101 Dalmations? They weren't remakes and they weren't the 5th sequel to a successful movie. These were original, brilliantly realised creative works. So your observation that capitalism by necessity was all about extracting the last few drops of lifeblood from a movie franchise before it dies reveals a chronic lack of knowledge about both the entertainment business and economics. Walt Disney always maintained the highest standards, he would be sickened to see what the money men are doing to his company's reputation.

Man, Harrison Ford just can't get a break. The guy has lived long enough to have been apart of three legendary franchises, only to see them go down the drain.
I don’t think Harrison is going to let hos final Indy movie be ruined. Blade Runner 2049 was great and he never cared for the Star Wars franchise, hence his disinterest on the sequel trilogy story. He wants this movie to be the last hurrah for Indiana Jones and Lucasfilm may have learned something with Episode IX. And James Mangold will possibly do his best. He wasn’t nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay for nothing.
He has been an active and eager participant in destroying his own legacy. He was a great action hero, but the guy is a dummy in real life. He was all-in on the garbage cash grab that was Crystal Skull. He desperately wanted for half of his life to be able to kill off his first big role, Han Solo. (Kathleen Kennedy and JJ Abrams finally gave him that chance.) He should have followed the example set by his on-screen father, Sean Connery, and retired in the early 2000s with a great legacy of movies to look back on.

The first 3 Indy movies were a perfect trilogy. Even #4, as ridiculous as it was, had it's moments and Indy was still the hero. And Raiders had a wonderfully strong female character. Marion Ravenwood was smart and capable and could drink you under the table.
Strong female character, yes. But in the end she was a damsel in distress. Edit: I'm not saying that a damsel is bad. My problem with Marion/Marianne is that she was first introduced as a strong capable woman but throughout the movie she got caught and put in a dress and turned into a damsel. So her cool introduction in the beginning of the movie is kind of wasted by what happened afterwards. And I cant even remember her doing anything of importance.
@@peternotpeter4201 I disagree in the sense that it makes it sounds like it needs to be a given. which I don't think is true. that being said, I of course also don't think the opposite (= "a woman can never be the ones needing to be saved by our male hero") should always apply as well. I also really believe most people don't even care as much about this question anyway, as long as your movie is somewhat competently written and produced.
It's the Sequels all over again. The Star Wars Prequels were godawful movies, but the Sequels were so horrendous that they actually fooled people into believing that the Prequels were worth a damn.

Yup. Just look at twitter whenever a discussion regarding one of these giant franchises goes viral. Many of them actively REVEL in the destruction of the characters and lore. Sometimes, they don't even seem to care if their own favorite characters are good, just that OURS are destroyed. Someone once said: "A heroic fantasy is to be 'better.'" Indy (and Harrison Ford) would deserve to get a send off movie more in the style of Gran Torino and Logan. A grounded story of an aging hero, but of course with a twist of classic Indy adventure.
This is the way to send Indy off. An aging Indy, perhaps desperately struggling against a foreign human rights issue (a la Temple of Doom rescuing children), but ultimately failing except for a small group of people he’s managed to save and perhaps inspiring others to take up the flag and continue his work.
A mix between home alone and Indy.. he’s searching for his vitamins and prune juice and encounters all types of perilous situations in his own home. Walking up/down stairs, getting out of the shower, answering his landline telephone. An adventure for the ages!
I really hope Harrison Ford reads the script and says “fuck no.” If he bails on the project, it’ll be dead in the water or, at least, everybody else will lose interest if they recast the character.
He'll read the sum, and say "oh yeah". He'll sign, and phone it in like he did 13 years ago. He's an actor, paid to do this kind of crap. 40 years ago it was the good kind of crap, now it's the diarreha type. We have the power, though. Don't watch it at the cinema, download it if you can't help it. If it doesn't make money, it's bye bye Indy forever, RIP, finally.

Maybe because most of what is churned out now are just crappy remakes of those 80s and 90s films but lack anything of what made them good in the first place.
Its fan boy cinema. Fan films are well... shit. So now you have fan films backed by Hollywood money, which makes for expensive blockbuster... shit. These are the films made by people who love the brand. Story, characters, worlds are meaningless to them they just love the brand. Its star wars/ghostbusters/Indiana/predator etc etc its always good no matter what.
When the reality is well no it isn't. These are the people who clap in the cinema when they repeat a line from the original typically without any context or reason other than it was in the original. Who gush about how much they felt it when X happened even when X was so contrived it was almost laughable or pointless. The people who think being a fan of some franchise is a replacement for having an actual personality. Typically its best just to ignore it an enjoy the films of old as they were un-tarnished by a bunch of bad fan fiction. Movies are basically dead at this point, its just churn out content now quantity over quality.
Must be, all the big movies are remakes or reimagined versions of those old movies.
I mean, someone name an original movie from the last six years that will still be important 30 years from now.
Predictions:
• It will make a billion dollars purely on brand recognition.
• The professional critics will be either bribed or threatened to give it glowing reviews while its audience score on Rotten Tomatoes floats between 50 and 60%.
• They will kill off Indiana Jones in the dumbest way possible but idiots on Twitter will praise it for being "emotional" and say shit like "this should be taught in film schools."
• Knowing they can't make any sequels without Harrison Ford, they will start making prequels or spin-offs with Indiana Jones played by a younger actor and they will flop horribly, but we won't know how bad they're really doing because they will be exclusive to Disney+ and they won't publish their numbers.

What I loved about Indiana Jones, is the fact he was more than just an action hero, he was also an academic, Indy used his intellect to figure out puzzles, remembering ancient history, and solving problems, that requires wits rather than force. I would rather have another academic action hero, instead of Indiana Jones, he as good for his time, so it's about time Indy enjoys his retirement.
There was a made-for-tv series of films called the Librarian. I think there was a spinoff series based on it too.

You're spot on on this one. Clint Eastwood is going to be 93. He is still making films. But he stopped being Dirty Harry in his 50s. And he didn't play Philo Beddoe after the second Any Which Way film. He has always played characters that reflected his age and the frailties that come with aging. That's class. Why Ford is agreeing to play Indiana Jones again is a mystery.

I think it's deeper than that. People like her seem to have a philosophy that human beings are blank slates entirely malleable to cultural messaging, because everything is a social construction. @Numpteez IMHO that means nothing, I like Logan and Ford v Ferrari, but to bring in another great director as an example: Ridley Scott also did a bunch of great movies like Alien, Gladiator, The Martian etc. but also some mediocre to bad movies like Prometheus, Alien Covenant or The Counselor.
And Mangold also did Knight & Day, that wasn't a really bad but very average action flick and Tom Cruise got enough movies with that main character, Mission: Impossible (that became better and better after Ghost Protocol), Jack Reacher and some single installments...

The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull wasn't that bad. As long as you stop watching the movie when they hit the temple, it's actually pretty good. Most of the whining comes from people that haven't watched the previous movies. If they did, they didn't think about how ridiculous it was that Indy could survive a multi-thousand mile journey on the outside of a submarine without dying from dehydration or exposure. Or, the fact that he forgets about supernatural powers after The Temple of Doom so that when he starts Raider's of the Lost Ark he suddenly no longer believes in the magic that he previously saw in India.
The main issue with the Crystal Skull was that they didn't bother to set up the finale properly. There were no hints in the lead up that they would be dealing with an interdimensional traveler rather than an alien. An outright alien would have been a tad bit of a stretch as Indy usually deals with supernatural powers, but not unreasonable.
The best part about you is the fact that you are able to effortlessly explain your grievances without rambling for an additional 30 minutes. Very well put and well spoken.

When John Carter meets his future bride, both prisoners of the Green Men of Mars, she is described as being nude, wearing only silks & harnesses. With the amount of nudity or near nudity in the source material, any true representation of it would require a film to be rated "R", something Disney doesn't do too often.

The first 3 Indy movies were a perfect trilogy. Even #4, as ridiculous as it was, had it's moments and Indy was still the hero. And Raiders had a wonderfully strong female character. Marion Ravenwood was smart and capable and could drink you under the table.
Strong female character, yes. But in the end she was a damsel in distress.
Edit: I'm not saying that a damsel is bad. My problem with Marion/Marianne is that she was first introduced as a strong capable woman but throughout the movie she got caught and put in a dress and turned into a damsel. So her cool introduction in the beginning of the movie is kind of wasted by what happened afterwards. And I cant even remember her doing anything of importance.

Indy (and Harrison Ford) would deserve to get a send off movie more in the style of Gran Torino and Logan. A grounded story of an aging hero, but of course with a twist of classic Indy adventure.
This is the way to send Indy off. An aging Indy, perhaps desperately struggling against a foreign human rights issue (a la Temple of Doom rescuing children), but ultimately failing except for a small group of people he’s managed to save and perhaps inspiring others to take up the flag and continue his work.
Have him in Argentina, hunting Nazis. I'd watch that.
A mix between home alone and Indy.. he’s searching for his vitamins and prune juice and encounters all types of perilous situations in his own home. Walking up/down stairs, getting out of the shower, answering his landline telephone. An adventure for the ages!

We almost got that. The director of Logan was going to make Indy 5 up until about a year ago.
I really hope Harrison Ford reads the script and says “fuck no.” If he bails on the project, it’ll be dead in the water or, at least, everybody else will lose interest if they recast the character.

He'll read the sum, and say "oh yeah". He'll sign, and phone it in like he did 13 years ago. He's an actor, paid to do this kind of crap. 40 years ago it was the good kind of crap, now it's the diarreha type. We have the power, though. Don't watch it at the cinema, download it if you can't help it. If it doesn't make money, it's bye bye Indy forever, RIP, finally.
