- Has any woman in history better understood the power of clothes than Princess Diana? An icon of 20th-century glamour, she was instinctively aware about how she could communicate with the world simply by what she wore.
Her clothes always sent a message: whether it was ‘revenge’ dressing (such as the time she used a striking little black dress to knock her husband’s adultery confession off the front pages) or representing Britain abroad as a future Queen.
With this in mind, Historic Royal Palaces, the charity that looks after many of our royal buildings, is staging a major new exhibition tracing the evolution of the Princess’s style, 20 years after her death. Through fashion, it examines her extraordinary life, from the demure, romantic outfits of her first public appearances - the ‘Shy Di’ years - to the assured elegance of her later life as a divorcée keen to shed the baggage of her royal role.
Diana: Her Fashion Story will be hosted at Kensington Palace, her former London home, and will feature 25 of her most iconic outfits - from the pussy-bow blouse worn in her engagement portrait to the black ballgown in which she famously danced with actor John Travolta at the White House. The Mail has been given an exclusive preview of all 25 exhibits, which we bring you in glorious detail, starting today.
When you see her dresses in the flesh, what strikes you is just how tiny Diana’s figure was. Since almost all her clothes were couture, their exact measurements were known only to Diana and her designers.
Although she was 5 ft 8 in tall and often looked Amazonian in photographs, she can never have been bigger than a size 10, and at times appears to have been closer to a tiny size 6.
Eleri Lynn, curator of historic dress for Historic Royal Palaces, says putting the exhibition together has given her a newfound respect for the princess. ‘Each of these dresses is a mini-biography. They tell us not just about the period and fashions at the time - many of which she, of course, influenced - but about Diana’s state of mind,’ she says. ‘She didn’t necessarily like being known as a clothes horse, but she knew that clothes helped her do her job.’
As well as a treasure trove of couture, Diana’s wardrobe also hides poignant secrets - as the Mail revealed yesterday. A bottle-green evening dress, designed by Victor Edelstein in 1985, bears a cluster of tiny fingerprints at knee height, made by her sons as they clung to their mother’s legs. Prince William would have been around three, and Prince Harry just a year old.
‘Because it is made from a beautiful silk velvet, heat and moisture can make indentations in the fabric,’ explains Eleri. ‘How magical to think these prints from the princes’ little hands may have lasted all this time.’
The exhibition’s final room holds a number of the dresses Diana auctioned off for charity, at her son William’s suggestion, shortly before her death in 1997. They include a green silk velvet evening dress by Catherine Walker, which she wore for a Vanity Fair photoshoot with Mario Testino, and a beautiful ‘dignified showstopper’ by the same designer, in grey silk satin with imitation pearl embroidery, which she wore to a state dinner with the King of Malaysia in 1992.
‘It was widely reported that the auction was a symbolic event, a way for Diana to close a chapter on her royal life and embark on a new one. Just a few months later, she died,’ says Eleri.’
What, in Eleri’s opinion, are the exhibition’s stand-out pieces?
‘If I had to choose two dresses, her “debs” gown [a flouncy Regamus dress she wore to a ball as a teenager] would be one of them. It’s very of its time, very frilly, very lacy. There’s a real innocence about it.
‘The other would be totally different: the black, halter-neck Catherine Walker dress she wore for the Mario Testino photoshoot just before she died. It’s got such a beautiful, streamlined silhouette and is so simple and understated yet very difficult to pull off.
‘I think the contrast shows just how far Diana had come in her short but incredible life.’

There never was nor ever will be a royal that drew the attention of the word as she did. A spectacularly good-looking woman with incredible style and the ability to touch people and leave a lasting impression. Her funeral was as dramatic as her marriage.
True but Meghan, her daughter in law is speeding up the rear, she is a stunningly beautiful women. Imagine how she'd look if she embellished with make up. Diana would have loved her. Sadly, that was not to be. Both brothers married well but Meghan has Diana's true visual beauty and spirit.

I often question myself as to why I cannot let her sleep. It is her enduring spirit which has touched not only her/our generation (I am 5 years older that HRH The Princess of Wales, Mother and Grandmother of our future King, and then again, King or Queen); so many peoples across their lifespan......, this must be why. Having seen many of these garments at the auction, that maroon embroidered coat jacket had gold and silver threads for those embroidered flowers. Her garments were magnificently done and made British designers look damned good. That little black number was the first thing you saw coming into the exhibit and set the tone of the display wonderfully. Diana did her country proud.

Manjula Adappa From all I’ve learned from various sources about Queen Elizabeth II, she probably didn’t understand Diana and saw her as a loose cannon. Which she was. I’m sure all the controversy around their marriage horrified her. They were ill suited to one another; Charles did his duty and married an aristocrat and sired an heir and a spare. What happened to Diana is tragic. RIP.

I so miss seeing her on my television!!! In the 1980's, I believe we all took her importance, as a woman, as a royal for granted. I wish things had been different for her!!! I think a a hole, she has been and will fade in society, except to us that hold her in high esteem. Long live Diana!
