      1) I'm from Norway, but I have a small percentage of Austrian/German in me :P Haven't taken any tests (yet), but my grandma told me a lot about it when she was alive ^_^
      2) And yes, I've felt lonely. Feeling lonely is rough, but luckily I'm not feeling lonely right now :)

      I'm 60.6 % British/ Irish
      11.2% French/ German
      11.1% Scandinavian
      16.9 Broadly northwest European
      O.1 percent broadly European
      0.1 broadly east african
I think we have all felt lonely at some time or another. I love the idea of bringing up the topic because we sometimes can easily trick ourselves into believing that we are different from other humans, but i think if you've ever felt something, chances are most people have felt that way too💚💚💚

I am from California, USA and I have definitely felt lonely before. I also have my Ancestry DNA information. So wild! It connected me to my sister, mom, and 2nd, 3rd, and 4th cousins right away with names we all recognized. Amazing! Also... I am 10% Irish. Hehe! 💚 63% England, Wales, and Northwestern Europe, 10% Norway, and 8% Finland were my other top results. I was surprised because my great grandmother Mary and her family and her husband's family were 2 generations in Portugal but I found out through this DNA that they must not have been that much Portuguese because I only had 4% Iberian Peninsula with more confidence in Spain than Portugal.

It’s so weird because I’ve always only wanted 0-1 children but after being at my grandmothers house and seeing all of my cousins running around and seeing how my grandmother always has her children/grandchildren visiting her, it makes me want an absurd amount of children so I they always visit me when I’m older

Thank you for helping destigmatize so many important matters. I have suffered with my mental health for about 8 years, and with that for me comes feelings of intense loneliness. I am currently feeling the most free and happy than I have ever felt and I'm a single mum to a gorgeous little girl, however I am pretty lonely! Me and my family moved from England 8 years ago so I don't have much family close by and don't have a friendship group here either which doesn't help. However I have more love in my heart than ever!

Hi! I'm Portuguese and lived in Dublin for 11 years. In july it will be a year since I moved to Portugal and now I am living in Northern Portugal (I'm from lisbon) and I have never experience this amount of loneliness in my life. Between Dublin and Portugal I went solo travelling for 3 months and though I was alone I only experienced lonliness very rarely. I now have a job but feel very disconnected and lonely...maybe because its hard to settle and connect with a new country even though it's my "own". I feel very different from the people who live up here and I miss all my friends back in Ireland. Funny your video was uploaded today as this week has been particularly hard.

I used to not be able to be alone for more than an hour or so... I went through a divorce and found that I actually love me!!! It took therapy and lots of reflection but I now know that it is ok to be a lone sometimes. I still have moments that I feel alone but I generally am alright. I am remarried to an awesome man who wants me to be the best me I can be and he has helped me so much to navigate through tough times! I am loved for just me, as I am right this minute! Thanks for such a fun video! I love when your Dad makes an appearance! 😂 I’m from the US and I’ve used a DNA test (not ancestry but MyHeritage) and a lot of us Americans don’t have much or any Native American so my percentages were a lot more spread out lol. And a huge portion of my DNA is Ireland/Scotland/Wales but I already knew my great grandparents on my paternal grandma’s side were Irish immigrants.
I had my doubts too, but I’m half Filipino and figured if they caught that they would be fairly legit- and they totally did, they just don’t have much of a breakdown for the Philippines.
Anyways thanks for the lovely intro about how we perceive others to be happier and more fulfilled-- I’m pretty level headed and sometimes I find myself falling into that mind-trap.
I get lonely sometimes but I’m usually pretty happy in my own company. I guess I just hate feeling like I’m struggling alone to swim in a sea that would rather swallow me than help me float. Most of the time I’m bobbing along trying to see the best in things and hoping for a desert island to get marooned on, and sometimes I feel like bad things keep happening but only ever to me (slightly narcissistic but there ya go) and everyone else is cruising by on boats and yachts and I’ve got 5 year old learn-to-swim floaties and am at the merci of the waves.
😂😁 Aw, yes. The glory of an extended metaphor.
But yeah, it’s a good reminder to check oneself whilst throwing personal pity parties... just because things aren’t great doesn’t mean there’s no bright side and no hope for better.
I hope everyone that’s feeling lonely can find at least one person to talk to. It’s amazing how having someone to chat with can make such a difference!

This is a brilliant video, really got me thinking. I’m from South London (DNA is Uk, Ireland and Norway) and I was thinking that loneliness hasn’t always appeared to me as being on my own but sometimes just feeling like the people around me have different interests or are at different stages of their lives so there’s that lack of relatability. I would hate to be without family though, that must be a really tough sort of loneliness.

I've definitely struggled alot with really isolating feelings of loneliness and depression off and on in my life the last few years, I think I really realized it when i started avoiding spending time with ppl I cared about and had many negative thoughts about myself and people i loved. It's scary when your loneliness hits the point of isolating yourself. The very thing that helps with relief is what you avoid. It even got to where I would be in a large group of people I knew and felt like I no longer could connect and felt alone even surrounded by loads of people. Also I had an extremely difficult time leaving friends or family after sharing meaningful amounts of time together, when I would go home I would feel so painfully alone. It's taken alot of work on myself and trying to undue the damaging things I've ingrained into my way of thinking but slowly it's gotten better but it's always an active battle! ❤

Thankfully there is this little hole in the wall studio that sets up jazz jam nights every week that I'm able to sit in on and play the drums, it has gotten me connected with some of the nicest people as we talk about music. It interesting how there can still be prejudice against Scots with more recent Irish heritage, especially in the highlands. I know people who have changed there second name ‘Mc’ to ‘Mac’ to get employed more. I find it silly as most of the Scots heritage is Irish whether it’s recent or not!

My family background is mostly Latvian and Russian. I'm an only child living with just my mum. My grandparents moved to Ireland a few years after I was born. It's nice to have them, I know so many people grow up with shit family or no family at all but I can't help but wish I had a sister or a brother or even if I lived in Latvia where most of my family is. It does get boring and lonely sitting in an empty house but I'm still incredibly grateful for my life and the family I do have.

This is so interesting because I’m 100% English! My family never moved from the south of England 😂 but we have a small but exceptionally close and loving family. We all live very far apart now (brother and his kids moved to Australia 5 years ago) but when we catch up nothing has changed. Living close to family has never been important until I’ve started trying for my own family and want to stay near to my parents

I've always just felt way closer to that side of the family rather than my mums side and Dublin is just my favourite place to be because I never feel alone there!!

I'm from Alaska, but currently live in North Dakota, and it has been quite some time since I felt lonely. I have my three children, my husband, a few close friends, and loads of pets to keep me company. The rest of my family is spread out all over the U.S., but every couple of years I'm able to travel to see some of them. I still have family members (aunts, uncles, and cousins) that I haven't met yet and I've always been curious about a DNA test such as this to find out more about my genetic background. I find it quite fascinating!

Hi Melanie, my family tree roots from Munster, Ireland along with England/Wales/Northwestern Europe from my dad's side and Native American/Northern Chihuahua & Southwest New Mexico regions plus Iberian Peninsula from my mom's side. The smallest traces come from France, Middle East, and Guinea.
Yeah, I've felt lonely many times. I still do. Though, sometimes the loneliness happens even when I'm around people I enjoy or love. It isn't strictly tied to lack of physical presence from others. The emotional and mental parts play a role too (if that is weird to say since it sounds obvious). Loneliness is a part of life in one form or another, and it is such a shared emotion and state of being. For me, knowing that even when feeling lonely we are not alone makes it more comforting during those moments.

It's good to have lots of family...if you have a good family. I'm so glad for you that yours seems nice. My family is dysfunctional and toxic and it's left me sort of reeling in the world, because I can't have kids and risk passing down several serious mental illnesses. Makes me feel so alone. I wish more than anything I had a loving family.

And even with the people close to me, I still feel lonely sometimes, which is perfectly normal! And if you are someone that often feels lonely, maybe join a club/organisation/class and meet some new people! I've also been getting into "friend-dating", and have made a new friend that lives right in my town :)

I love genealogy! I'm American and I knew that I was half or so Polish heritage - and I've always wanted to know more about my ancestors and family in Poland, but they came over 100 plus years ago. I did the ancestry DNA test a few years ago. A few months ago I was contacted by a 3rd cousin who is Polish - her great-grandmother was my great-grandfather's sister. My great-grandfather came to America in 1912 and her great-grandmother stayed in Poland. We've had a great time catching up and she's translated letters for me that I had that were written in Polish when they were still all in touch.

It is actually something that comes in therapy a lot and something I work on continuously- that it‘s okay to feel lonely, but that it can be nice to be alone AND that I am lucky to not really be lonely as I have so many lovely people in my life. 🌷

I'm from the northern part of New York (the Adirondack region of New York in the USA haha). I've suffered from loneliness ever since my husband and I moved to Utah where we don't have any family or close friends. It's incredibly difficult to make and maintain friendships as an adult. :( I used the Ancestry DNA test and found out (well, affirmed haha) that I have a lot of European blood mixed with Native American. Not a huge surprise there, but there were a few unexpected parts of Europe where my ancestors are from. My grandma is really big on genealogy and learning about the family, but that only gave me info on my mom's side of the family. I'm guessing all those unexpected bloodlines were from my dad's side, which I know nothing about. Anyway, I love how you paired DNA and unexpected family with loneliness. Very interesting video!

I'm from the United States, specifically New York, but my roots are mainly Irish, but also English, Italian, and French-Canadian. I often feel lonely, as well. I do have a lot of people in my life that I'm close to and I'm very thankful for that. Although there are many times when I wish there were more people I could relate to on a personal level. Just remember mates: the more you are authentically yourself, the fewer friends you have. It is better to be yourself and have a few friends who love you for you, than being fake to make everyone happy, and have a bunch of acquaintances.

Hi Melanie, I love your content! I did the ancestry DNA test and I got 58% English and Northwestern European (all Northern England - I’m from Yorkshire and my paternal side has been here since forever), 40% Ireland and Scotland, and 2% Swedish. Very interesting and I found a 4th cousin I didn’t know existed. My maternal great grandparents and ancestors were from Ireland, so not surprised how Irish I was haha! The Swedish part was my early ancestry. I would love to try another dna test too. In terms of whether I’ve felt lonely I definitely have before, but I think everyone has at some point in their lives.
