    I just read this book over the holiday's. It's a great read. Love this period in auto racing history and he captures it well. Thank you Mr. Morton for making the effort to share your experiences from this time with the rest of us!

    That cobra in the background is absolutely stunning!!
    The beautiful blue paint job, and the side exhaust flares and headlights and chrome and just the whole look of the car is so Drop Dead Gorgeous I would do anything to own one..

    I jumped into this book yesterday and can't put it down. Having met John Morton last fall at a BBQ for BRE enthusiast was a major event for me. He's a true gentleman and an American Racing Hero!

    This is COOL. "Jay's Book Club" and J"ay's Garage"
    Really a great source of input for my life long interest in fast stuff on wheels.
    Thank You Jay Leno.
    Your Online Show is terrific. Really. Your features are always interesting, with great looks at stuff i'll never get to see anywhere else.
    I really hope you don't get tired of doing it.
    Imagine, you may be becoming a big King Of Cars. Grin ?
    "John Morton" picked me up at the slot car track one night and drove me home. It was 1964 or 65. I was 15 and loved racing.
    So instead driving straight home we drove fast around and around my block. He made it a race track.
    He had a Ford Galaxie. It was raining, and dark, but with good street lights and parked cars all over the place.
    Oh man that fun was big. The ride of my life.
    Thanks John. All these years haven't fogged that thrill...
    I never had a better time in my life. Remember that John?
    Inches from embarrassment, we drifted in power slides that only people like you can do. I have to figure out how to say hello. I'm from years past..
    Long time no see John. I"m Ole's kid, Mike.
    I enjoyed watching your success through the years. Hope you see this comment. Gonna order your book now.
    We could talk about a lot of the old days... thanks Jay

      fuck top gear! not sure about the american edition.. but the original ones (the british) r just a group of stupids! (and i'm being polite)

    • @NafanyaZX
      @NafanyaZX 10 лет назад +6

      Chris Saddler Sam It's no secret that the british Top Gear is a circus with cars and is hosted by 3 clowns. The show is silly, because that's the whole idea/concept behind it. It never tries to be serious, instead it attempts to get us to smile. And guess what, it works. You don't have to like it, but so many people love it, your opinion is simply irrelevant.
      P.S.: The american copy is just a bad copy. Watchable, but it does not go to the same extremes. Probably due to the lack in funds.

    • @pineyLt
      @pineyLt 5 лет назад +1

      I signed off with top gear after hearing Jeremy trash talk the U.S. automobiles and specifically the people a few times. You want to talk cars fine and your entitled to you opinion but to broadcast your snide remark’s on TV is wrong.
      The episode that really did it for me was when they were on a road trip through Alabama and wrote insulting things on their cars. They got the response they asked for and got run out of town then talked trash. I’m sure if anyone were to talk trash and insult the locals in Liverpool it’d reap a similar response.
      It was just deserved.
      They started sh*t, ran like cowards and instead of giving a deserved apology to Alabama they talked trash afterwards.
      A real demonstration of how you can have money and have Low class.
      I hope their show tanks.

    I raced in England when I was 19 and 20 years of age back in the late 1960s. Even at the club racing level there was plenty of competition but it was at least affordable and possible to be competitive to the extent of not running at the back every time! Winning of course was a foregone conclusion since many factory-sponsored drivers and cars were often mixed in with us amateur club guys. I can claim I once raced against Jack Sears in my Mini 998cc against Sears in his Ford Galaxy with one million cc - well put it this way, I saw him at the start on the grid, then never saw him again throughout the race! I cannot imagine being able to afford racing today though!

    Great visit, Jay! I was outside the hangar where the Shelby team was headquartered the year that Ken Miles pranged the 427 Cobra, looking in. There, to my amazement, was Ken Miles, the team leader, welding that broken car with his driving gloves on. He had given orders not to break the cars: "If you break it, you fix it!" True to his word, he fixed it as best he could. Of course, the frame was really badly bent. I don't think they really ever got the alignment totally sorted out. As I recall, and it was a long time ago, the tree he hit was between the Esses and the Hairpin. How he lost it there is a mystery. But John Morton's book will be great fun to read! Thanks, Jay!

    Oh yes those were the days. Never had money for any car to speak of but had a Rambler. Eventually went to work for AMC dealer and then on to a Lincoln Mercury dealer where the high point of my involvement with cars was checking in and servicing as well as test driving new Panteras. That was as close as I ever got to cars. I later went to motorcycle racing and was racing them on one side of Albuquerque while Al Unser Jr was racing go karts on the west side. Fun days!!!
    Also raced bikes with a young man by the name of Dave Campos who set a Land Speed record for Harley Davidson in 1990 of 322 MPH at Bonneville. Nice Guy.
    Mike
    PS I like this GIG Jay !!!! Keep it up.

    l think back then the lack of sponsers allowed you to do what you wanted , but now its all about selling a product, the winner has to change his hat 4 times while on the winners circle, kinda deminishes the drivers personality,,,

    Jay now that you're done with Late night TV. I'm thinking a weekend, hour long car show is your next calling. Many of us (if not all of your subscribers) would loyally watch. A 10 minute product corner with a 10 minute book club.....thing. Plus a special guest (car) review. Combine all three videos that your RUclips channel puts up in some combination. to make a weekly show please. It's really only your youtube channel and Top Gear UK that I find entertaining in any way shape or form. You could fill a major hole if you do it right.

    It's so hard to compare earlier times with today. Sure $300 sounds cheap today, but what was that worth back then and what did it get you back then. Gets you a half decent helmet today. But where it really really changes, is in the safety of what those guys drove back then, not to mention the safety at the tracks these days, to what they had 'back in the day'. I think it is very unfair, to both generations, comparing sports people. Just my thoughts. I just wish I had followed my dream and got into auto racing. Oh well another should have...

    I am fortunate enough to have the 2013 Shelby GT350. I ordered the car before Carol passed away. I will never sell the car. I'll leave that up to my heirs. But the car will be modified with a roll cage and better racing seats, to keep me from sliding around, in the seat. The engine has been maxed out horsepower wise. Without hurting any reliability. And that's only 700 hp According to the speed shop. At Shelby American. I don't think the brand will ever be the same. Now they Carol has passed.

    • @thegoldensaber4531
      @thegoldensaber4531 10 лет назад

      You're a lucky guy but at the same time I think that value was killed by modifying it ... If you wanted to mess with something I would have gotten an older Mustang GT and left the GT350 alone. Your car and your choice though. To each their own. If I had 50 grand to spend, which is just a guess for how much it was, I would get an older one. They're a million times cooler anyways.

      Ford USA are a little too conservative when it comes to chassis and suspension. Ford Australia will cease local production in 2016, but for over a decade, the standard Australian Ford sedan, the Falcon has better suspension than the current Mustang. 4 wheel independent suspension, traction control, stability assist, better brakes, and a turbocharged 6 cylinder that is up to a second quicker over the quarter mile than a stock Coyote V8. Rigid axles were made obsolete on all but commercial vehicles over a decade ago, yet there it is on the Mustang.

      TheGoldenSaber. You're right. I am extremely fortunate. But it's kind of a trade-off. Had I not broken my neck and sued the people responsible. I would not have nice things. And on the opposite side of the coin. I would take being homeless and walking around. I appreciate your opinion. I would never terrapin matching numbers classic car.
      I have a 1969 GT500. That car will never be modified. But the new Shelby was built for open track days. And that's what it's going to be used for. I will be posting videos of the roll cage being installed. And then, a very trick seat that will be adapted for my 1970 Hemi Challenger R/T. You will have to see it work to understand it. But this will eliminate any need for lifting me in and out of the cars. My chassis builder worked in NASCAR for 20 years as a fabricator for Red Bull Racing. And he has a daughter who has down syndrome. So is very familiar with wheelchairs. And he's a great problem solver. He has been working on my 1970 pro-touring Superbee for a year now. All it needs is paint and interior. Then it will be done. That is going to be something else. Hot Rods by Dean is the name of the shop where the work is being done.

      I apologize for judging, I had no idea. That really sucks that your neck was broken, but at least your making lemonade out of lemons lol. It would almost seem hard to be in a bad mood around all of those amazing cars. I completely understand you modifying the new one now, being that you have a lot of cool better ones. I'm subbing to you and keep up the good work.
