I could not have asked for a better more informative video as I struggle to make my first big boy watch purcahse. Thank you very much for your time and effort.
The only downside on this watch is the lack of a backlight for the digital screens. But i found a solution for all Analog-Digital G-Shocks. Just lay a finger above the screen and push the light button. So the light will be reflected from the finger to the screen. This works really well. Nice review and great collection.
Thanks, just tried it on my dark blue AWG! I just got it an hour ago, is there any way to set a favourite world time? I'd like to have NYC as a secondary time, since I am in Europe, but need the NYC for work.
Usually those rechargeable batteries last quite long. I got a Citizen Eco Drive on Feb 2001. It's almost 19 years now, the battery still runs strong. I've purchased some Tough Solars lately, I hope Casio can last as long as the Citizen.
Great review for a great watch. Love mine even more now. Thanks for your clear guidance through all the watches functions.so much clearer than those little booklet that come with the tin
Have been watching your reviews on the AWG watches. I will be shopping for one after I finish writing this comment and probably will come back to it once I get the watch for setting it up. Again thanks for the videos.
I've had a Casio Men's AWG100-1A (4765) for over a decade. I wore it every day for years. Then I stored it in the dark and neglected it for years. Just took it out of storage last week and it's still working great (after feeding it some light and resetting everything). It amazes me that it's still going strong after so much hard use followed by so much neglect. The only signs of wear are the white lettering( "FORWARD", "REVERSE" etc) on the black resin is wearing off. Also, the battery is at "Mid" charge and not "Hi" anymore. This watch also only knows about five atomic clocks (not six). The far right LCD is for seconds so the layout is a bit different than the watches in this video too.
So many features in this comparatively old model... that are presented as "extras" in the new carbon models: analogue + digital displays; solar power; move watch hands to see the digital display; atomic time (not very useful in may region); metal buckle, and all the standard digital features for a casio watch. Most important - the watch is not ludicrous in size as the GA-models.
Yes, using Multiband 6 these watches will make the changes for Summer Time or, as we call it here, Daylight Saving Time (DST) and then back to Standard Time on the correct dates.
Just took delivery of one of these watches with my first combi bracelet on it, i really love the watch, I’ve got the black dial with white bezel writing on it, the sub dials are in stealth, not had one of these before and yeah it’s certainly a lot lot harder to read than normal (black on white) but not really too big a deal as I only really use them to check date every so often, I do wish they lit up with the backlight though. I really like the combi bracelet a lot, first time I’ve had or even seen one, in fact it was only about a week ago I even heard of them and I’ve had many many G’s for so many years, mad that I’ve only just recently heard of them, such a difference to a standard resin strap but certainly not as heavy or even feels the same as a SS bracelet on a normal watch, I’ve got the version with metal middle links but it’s still nice and light and super easy to adjust. Anyway, thanks for the video, I don’t like setting up digital watches, just not something I like doing but it was a breeze with your video, so much easier than trying to read a manual, thanks a lot 😁👍🏻
I have the same one, the black out model (AWG-M100B-1A). Have had it for 5 years now. I forgot about it for about a year, placed in a drawer. Recharged under direct sunlight for 2 days straight. Full charge and got a Hi indicator, thankful. Recently changed the band with a self weaved paracord strap. Only drawback for me is difficulty reading the negative digital displays. But still a favorite of mine cause it goes with any attire.
Excellent video! I've just purchased the watch with the blue dial (AWG-M100SB-2AER) and I think it's great. It's not too big for my wrist and I love the fact that it picks up the atomic time here in the UK. Thanks for sharing!
Love the watches. I have the GAW- 100B which is very similar to these watches just slightly different hands and the back light also lights up the digital sections of the watch. Its my favorite watch in my collection.
Great video on this watch. Watch this one and the subsequent ones you've done. Only thing I wish is you did a wrist check while wearing one of them. It would give me a sense of scale. Thank you.
Thank you for a great review. On the strength of your video, I purchased a AWG-M100SB-2AER to replace my scuffed up Waveceptor. I use every feature and I'm very pleased with my purchase. One difficulty I experienced, is trying to see the seconds without my glasses on. Also, in subdued lighting it's almost impossible to read. Given your extensive knowledge, I was wondering if knew of a watch with identical functionality but with the addition of a second hand. So far I have only found the Mudmaster: four times the price just for an additional hand. Having said that, the backlight is better and I know I would have fun with the other features. Thanks again. I really enjoy your channel. I find it entertaining and educational. Best regards, Steve.
In my own collection I have the GR-B100 but it’s a big watch. Also the ProTrek PRW-50 or PRW-60, but the price can be high and it has those added sensors. But maybe the closest thing (in a non-G-Shock lineup) would be the WVA-M640 or the Japan market watches with the same module like the WVA-M630 or the Lineage LCW-M100.
@@GoodTimekeeper Hi Greg, Thanks for your quick response. I'm check out those models. Thank you. I have 8" wrists so the AWG-M100 is much smaller than I thought it would be.
I like the GAW-100. The whole thing is a bigger version of the AWGM100 watch with the same functions and actual backlights on the LCD windows. I don’t know if the LCD which shows seconds is large enough to make a difference for you. Like the smaller ones, the GAW models don’t have second hands. And I don’t recommend negative LCD watches if the user has any kind of issues with vision (or even if they have perfect vision, really).
@@GoodTimekeeper Thanks Greg, I think the GAW1-100 is the one for me. Considering the obsessive hours of research I did I can't believe I missed this one. Also, I can see if I were to get the Mudmaster I get frustrated that I couldn't see the LCD displays at all! Thanks again.
To people who don't like the light. Don't buy this one if you want a backlight that illuminates a whole room :D The light is more tactical oriented ( orange or red are usually used for that ) and since 80 % of active military uses a specific g-shock it isn't weird at all ;)
Awesome video, thank you so much for posting. I'm interested in this line of watches and based on your video, I'm planning on getting one now. Love the detail you put into this review.
I have the AWG-M100SB and I like it a lot. The white hands on the dark-blue background can be read very well, even under poor light conditions. For the night, it has "glow in the dark" and if that is not enough, even a backlight. One question about the GET information. Is there a way to find out which of the 6 radio stations was used to acquire the signal? In Europe, it would be interesting to know if the watch receives the German or the UK transmitter. The older model with Multiband 5 had an indicator for this information.
Can you force the atomic time check? For isntance, when you land in a new destination do oyu have to wait until your clock reads 12:00AM or can you ask it manually to do the search?
You can manually start the time calibration. However, the watch will NOT automatically know that you're in a new time zone. You will have to manually set the time zone if you have travelled to a different zone. Then the watch will already be correct and you can simply wait for it to automatically check itself after midnight.
In regular time keeping mode, hold down the "adjust button" until the display says H.SET. Then you can use forward/reverse buttons to adjust the hands. Natually you'll want them both pointing at 12.
Mind blowing watch collection! Wow! ...Well, of course back in my day, we didn't have watches. When I wanted to know the time, I had to push a nail into my wrist and make a sun dial! It worked like the dickens during the day, but at night the dern blasted thing would never.. ... ..
Hi Greg! OK, so I just bought 2 of these. One for me and another to gift to a friend. Would you mind pointing me in the right direction for an upgraded strap please? I’m thinking a nylon/nato, one piece or similar. I’d love to put an original Casio bracelet on mine, but a little out of my budget. From what I’ve researched thus far, I’d need 16mm adapters for this particular G Shock, but not sure. Any help you could off would be great. Thanks for your time. No pun intended. 😉
Casio is known for using capacitors instead of batteries for the power behind the solar charging. They can go bad, but they can outlast just about any battery out there. The downside is that a capacitor does not hold the charge as long as a battery does.
I bought this watch a month ago and i notice when you set an alarm one hour before the alarm goes off in the three o clock display i see an one hour countdown
Very good tutorial! After that I bought this model. I am very pleased. I have a question: on march 31 it shows Friday and not Tuesday as the day of the week. The operating instructions say nothing about this setting. How do you set the day of the week correctly? Thank you for your help.
Swapping the local and home time zone is a very cool feature! I wish my GW7900 had it... oh wait, maybe it has, I should really read the manual :D Cool design, too. Thanks for the video!
I found a new GW7900 for just $60 a few weeks ago and I plan to do an in-depth review video about it soon. In fact, you can see a little piece of that watch in the edges of some shots on this video. Spoiler alert: I really like that one too!
I know this is an older video but I just recently bought 2 of these watches and just realized that it has 5 regular alarms and no snooze alarm??? That’s pretty odd considering every other 5 alarm G-Shocks has snooze alarms…. 🤷🏻♂️ ✌🏼😎👍🏼
Take a look at this video. ruclips.net/video/5Ih2QbHjHPs/видео.html The watch there works the same way. Go to the 8:55 mark in that video and it shows how to go to the alarm setup mode, which is also where you turn the hourly signal on or off.
Darran Thompson Top row far left is the MTG-900. It's an old watch and I also have the updated model, the MTG-M900. I've posted video reviews of each of them so please have a look at those other videos too. Thanks!
No, it probably isn’t broken. Things you could try: Have the watch display the last time it was able to receive successfully. What has changed since then? What is your location and how far away is that from the atomic time transmitter? What kinds of electronic or electrical devices are near the place where you’re getting the error? There are other things to consider too.
Could you please tell me what happens if you hold the Adjust button pressed for more than 3 seconds? I did this and in the right square appeared the message ”H.SET” and also both hands of the watch moved to the 12 o'clock position.
Very useful review. However, I have a question which I could not figure out from the video - is there a way to make the digital display show time from a different time zone permanently (not after you press buttons). Me and my girlfriend currently live in different time zones and it would be really nice checking my watch and knowing her time without making any calculations, or pressing any buttons
Short answer: Yes! Long answer: If you set the digital display to "WT" for World Time then it will show the selected "World Time" time zone in the little, round LCD on the left side. The analog hands will continue to show the local time zone and it will stay this way indefinitely (until you manually select another mode).
@@SmoothRiverProd thank you for the answer. That's a great feature, would be shame if it did not include it. I fell in love with the design of this watch (the completely black one with white arrows) and this feature is the buy point for me
*_I’ve recently acquired the AWG-100 & its not packed with as many features as the AWG-M100. There’s no Time Swap in World Time Mode & u can’t jump directly to UTC time by pressing B & D concurrently, u can’t move the analog hands from the LCD panels at will, it has only 1 alarm, & it’s Multi Band 5 rather than MB6. Lastly, the 6 ‘o clock LCD panel only indicates which Radio Tower the watch received the Atomic Signal from. It serves no other purpose, which is a downer._*
Comprehensive review. I have a similar model with a red hour hand. I think the hands are the weakest part of these watches. Visibility is not as good as it could be. I would choose to have the same colour hour and minute hand if I was buying again. I would also prefer solid hands with plenty of lume on them - rather than skeleton hands. I agree that digital works best against a light colour background, rather than white against black.
Awesome video. Thank you! Greg, will the watch enter an atomic time signal during the night (12midnight to 5AM) even is power save mode is enabled or on? I thought they go to sleep at night in the dark.
When the watch enters sleep mode (when power save is enabled) the LCD screens turn off but all other functions are still enabled. If the watch stays in the dark and remains in sleep mode continually for 6 or 7 days then the atomic time reception and other functions are disabled. Also, the analog hands stop but basic quartz timekeeping keeps going internally. Casio refers to these two sleep levels as “display sleep” followed by the longer-term “function sleep” state.
Nice watch all around, but a terrible backlight function other than the white-faced version (which only showed up well due to the face color...not the light).
Great video. Can anybody confirm or deny that when in a timekeeping mode, the "mode" button fires on release and not on press (i.e. the watch switches to WT mode when you release the "mode" button)? Not sure if this is just my watch or any other AWG-M100 too. thanks
I hadn’t bought an analog G-Shock before and the first one I bought was just so appealing that I couldn’t resist the color variations. Also, I was finding lots of good deals through 2018 and 2019, but not as many more recently.
I believe that Jay and Kays sells an adapter so that you can install third-party watch bands, including their NATO strap and stuff like that. But, other than that, the stock watch bands seem to work best. Casio does make a "combi bracelet" that will fit on these. It's expensive but it IS an alternative.
No. But you can get one like it for less than $10 from places like Amazon. You can also get them with more LEDs or with fewer LEDs. Actually, there are a lot of different Ultraviolet "blacklight" flashlights out there.
Nice video review. I just ordered one of these. I was really looking for a gshock that isn't very big and quite affordable. Most of the G-Shocks are 50+mm diameter.
How does the watch wear? Is it comfortable? I have a DW5600 and the screws on the bottom hurt my wrist bone, and my Mudman's rubber grips does the same. What a shame!
@Alkaiser It is comfortable TMO. Unlike DW5600, the 4 screws on the back of this watch are much lower than back case dome, so in most time they will not touch your wrist. I have not feel any existence of them so far.
Please mention the iOS application called “clock wave“. This iOS application will mimic the radio time signals from five of the different time radio broadcast around the world. If you put your watch right next to the phone and put it into “get“ mode, the watch will set itself using the mimic radio signal. There is a RUclips video about this - look that up. The application “Clock Wave“ cost two dollars. There is no subscription fee. Please note, that with this iOS application you should be able to synchronize a radio controlled watch (from any manufacturer) anywhere in the world anytime of day.
@@taylorchurch7330 turn up the volume on your speaker as high as possible. Then, put your watch right next to the speaker on your phone (I assume your iPhone) and tilt it around a little bit to see if you can get it so that the signal is strongest. My watch I have to sort of play with a little bit until it actually begins to hear the signal clearly and then it works fine. Also, if you have an older watch that does not have as good a antenna for hearing the signal, then it may take two or three minutes for it to finish syncing. Let me know if that helps.
Hi Greg. I have an MTG-900 too and totally love the thing. My son is going into the Army and I want to get him one of these AWG-M100 watches since they combine the tough solar with the atomic timekeeping like my MTG-900. He is required to only have an "ALL black" watch. I keep seeing several models that look identical, but have slightly different model numbers. Do you have a listing of what all these letter/number combinations mean? Specifically, I keep seeing these: AWG-M100B-1A, AWG-M100B-1AER, and AWG-M100B-1ACR. I cannot seem to find any info on these variations. LOL, I mean, I don't even know what the AWG means. The M seems to be a "medium" case size and the B seems to be "Black", which I need. I'm hoping that at least ONE of these has the glow-in-the-dark on all of the hour marks.
The last three letter is for market region code, all of the watch is essentially the same, the difference is just the region where the watch is sold 1AJF = Japan Domestic Market 1ADR = International Market 1ACR = US & Canada Market 1AER = European Market
From what I can tell, the GAW watches were primarily available in the Japanese and European markets. There's also a GAS line without atomic time reception. They appear to be very similar to these AWG watches in this video, but they are more expensive, generally, when I try to look for places to buy them. Also, from what I can tell, the AWG watches are available in more colors.

How do you receive the atomic time infromation?
Mine doesn’t say that it has, I just got it
I know this is an older video but I just recently bought 2 of these watches and just realized that it has 5 regular alarms and no snooze alarm??? That’s pretty odd considering every other 5 alarm G-Shocks has snooze alarms…. 🤷🏻♂️
✌🏼😎👍🏼
We can turn synchro on or off. Can the synchro be set up once a week or a 1x a month ?
or only every night ?
Thank you very much......prefer watching you than reading the confusing book.
How do you turn off hourly chime on this one ? Thank you for a great review like always .
Take a look at this video. ruclips.net/video/5Ih2QbHjHPs/видео.html The watch there works the same way. Go to the 8:55 mark in that video and it shows how to go to the alarm setup mode, which is also where you turn the hourly signal on or off.
@@GoodTimekeeper thank you
Hi great review what's the model of the one in the top left in ur case ?
Darran Thompson Top row far left is the MTG-900. It's an old watch and I also have the updated model, the MTG-M900. I've posted video reviews of each of them so please have a look at those other videos too. Thanks!
Hi,
I tried to set the clock multiband 6.
at is error.
Is it broken?
No, it probably isn’t broken. Things you could try: Have the watch display the last time it was able to receive successfully. What has changed since then? What is your location and how far away is that from the atomic time transmitter? What kinds of electronic or electrical devices are near the place where you’re getting the error? There are other things to consider too.
@@GoodTimekeeper thx bro.
Greg, very nice job as usual. How big is your wrist, and how does it look as worn? Thank you!
I ordered AWG-M100SBB-1AJF, which I don't think is in your collection. Would you like to open it together when it arrives?
Do these models have the tilt light function at night ? Or do you need to press the button everytime you need it ?
It doesn't
It does. You hold the light button for three seconds to turn the function on or off.
Could you please tell me what happens if you hold the Adjust button pressed for more than 3 seconds? I did this and in the right square appeared the message ”H.SET” and also both hands of the watch moved to the 12 o'clock position.
H.SET means "hands set". It is the mode to calibrate the hands.
I agree that digital works best against a light colour background, rather than white against black.
what kind of battery these watches take?
@@GoodTimekeeper you’re the man. Thank you sir!
I edited my comment. The analog hands stop as part of the longer “function sleep” state. But press any button and it’ll all wake up again.
Not sure if this is just my watch or any other AWG-M100 too. thanks
On my watch, the watch switches mode at the moment you STOP pressing it. So, yes, it fires on release.
ElmertheClep thank you for your reply!
I miss when Casios were made in Japan 🇯🇵
They still are made in Japan, but just high end G-Shock models.
Very nice review. But I wanted to know why do you like this particular watch so much that made you get so many versions of it.
I hadn’t bought an analog G-Shock before and the first one I bought was just so appealing that I couldn’t resist the color variations. Also, I was finding lots of good deals through 2018 and 2019, but not as many more recently.
Hi. What is the size of this watches? Thanks
I just stumbled across this video researching this model.
Have you seen last years 90's Retro Special Color version? It's a throwback of amazing!
That's my favorite in my G collection!
Awesome explanations. Thank you so much
Isn't it rather GAW, not AWG ??
Features are different for the 100's or m100's of the AWR, AWG and GAW.
Look the same but different...
Hey Greg,
What is/are the differences and which is th best watch between: AWG-M100 & GAW-100? I'm looking to by one of them.
The GAW is a bigger model than the AWG. Otherwise, the features are identical.
Is it true that the radio tower in the USA is being decomissioned?
no there is no reason to do something like that if anything they would be up gradeing the towers
There was a rumor floating around that WWVB would be closing down at the beginning of 2019. But it didn't happen.
why did it say on the watch that the battery is low and medium at the same tome?
It's not, it says high, because it's reversed LCD
Do these require a proprietary band?
I believe that Jay and Kays sells an adapter so that you can install third-party watch bands, including their NATO strap and stuff like that. But, other than that, the stock watch bands seem to work best. Casio does make a "combi bracelet" that will fit on these. It's expensive but it IS an alternative.
is that torch included?
No. But you can get one like it for less than $10 from places like Amazon. You can also get them with more LEDs or with fewer LEDs. Actually, there are a lot of different Ultraviolet "blacklight" flashlights out there.
Great review, very useful.
I can’t get mine to sync using this app. Is there a trick to it?
@@taylorchurch7330 turn up the volume on your speaker as high as possible. Then, put your watch right next to the speaker on your phone (I assume your iPhone) and tilt it around a little bit to see if you can get it so that the signal is strongest. My watch I have to sort of play with a little bit until it actually begins to hear the signal clearly and then it works fine. Also, if you have an older watch that does not have as good a antenna for hearing the signal, then it may take two or three minutes for it to finish syncing. Let me know if that helps.
@@wbwarren57 thank you sir.
1 been able to find mine on any picture from G-Shock
Like Casio G-Shock AW-590
The last three letter is for market region code, all of the watch is essentially the same, the difference is just the region where the watch is sold
1AJF = Japan Domestic Market
1ADR = International Market
1ACR = US & Canada Market
1AER = European Market
@@Grefareal Thank you for the reply. So, if that is all true, what does the 1A (with no additional letters) mean? Any idea on the AWG versus a GAW?
From what I can tell, the GAW watches were primarily available in the Japanese and European markets. There's also a GAS line without atomic time reception. They appear to be very similar to these AWG watches in this video, but they are more expensive, generally, when I try to look for places to buy them. Also, from what I can tell, the AWG watches are available in more colors.
It wont let me postapicture
Parabéns excelente video.
Have it, not a fan. Looks pretty though.
instead of 100's of a second they should have used that dial to keep track of how many hours.. Would have been much smarter of an idea.
Good grief was this made in 2018 or 1998???
The first versions of the AWG-M100 were introduced in the year 2012.
Are you into smart watches at all?
I haven't taken the jump to smart watches yet.
i will have a awg-m100f. that i great.
*_Sir, has u not elected MUTE as u toggle through the modes, u would’ve heard the high pitch indicator tone to alert u that u had cycled back to Home Time Mode.*_😉
You dont hat mine
Super!!!
I have the AWG-100R since 2008 and still keeping battery at high level
Mine is multi band 5
