I saw gaura for the first time ever at our garden center this year and fell in love. We don’t have the best soil so ours is not as abundant as yours but it is very quickly becoming a favorite. It has that fairy garden feel to it. It’s also giving my beds that “cottage” feel I love.

That's what I said! Just gives that aged patina look to it like it's been sitting there for years! Like a fountain you would find in ancient European town or city!
Hi Laura, Just a quick FYI...I have a fountain that gets algae in it too, I drain (Scoop out) the water then I put white vinegar in the bowl and brush it around. It kills the algae and doesn't hurt the plants, bees or birds. I rinse it out and drain it again and it's sparkling clean for quite a while. I have also cleaned my pump by removing it, put it in a bucket of vinegar & water and run it until all the gunk comes out. I have hard water too, 'cause I'm on a well. I've cleaned my fountain 2 or 3 times this season and it stays clear for weeks during the summer. I even left it all winter and gave it a cleaning in spring and it works great. (I'm in Western WA). We had a pretty mild winter but it did freeze a few times, but no problem. I turned on the pump after the last frost and it's been going ever since.
The view of fountain, guara, and driveway planter flowers is my favorite. Gorgeous 🥰. I love the contrast of your feet in scummy water. You are so inspiring. Thank you for ALL of it. 💖
Hi Laura! You're so much fun to watch! You did a geat job on cleaning the fountain. It looks so pretty and sounds so comforting! Thank you for sharing!
I use 30-second Cleaner from Lowe’s it is safe for plants and all you do is spray and rinse no need to scrub. I use it for my driveway to clean the mildew and hard water from the rain.
Love this video Laura. I work on fountains and pumps quit a bit. If you get calcium build on you pump. Soak it in a vinigar and hot water sloution. it will desolve the calcium and clean the pump piston very well without causing and damage to the pump. And with Alge. I use a granulated algicide. Just add it to the foutain water directly and it will cut the alge build up in half. You can find algicide at pretty much any garden center. Once again I love your videos. your tutorials have help me learn and has help the evolution of my gardening dramatically. Much love to you and your family. And thank you.
I add a very small amount of pool chlorine to the water in my fountains. Never have algea. I only clean the fountain at the beginning and end of the season. Just thought I would share🥰
We live in a hard water area (UK) and have orange ‘rust’ stains in the shower due to high iron levels. White vinegar and baking soda usually gets rid of it with no problem. Or steam!
Vinegar would be my go-to! I use CLR as well on most things vinegar doesn’t work on; it’s a stronger acid and safe for a lot of applications. By the way, not sure about iron/rust, but beach can turn some other metallics (like the aluminum in antiperspirant) bright PINK!
@@twobluestripes I made a hugh mistake i used bleach in the water it ate up every castet in the pump a hard lesson to learn, i have four big fontains on the property, needless to say it was expensive lesson.
That's is what i use in my concrete bird baths, works so well. Sprinkle baking soda and vinegar and watch it work. Scrub with brush and rinse, so awesome!
@@emmajo5303 Since most of the rust is in the upper 3 tiers I was wondering about leaving the plug in the bottom tier, and putting a small container under the hole in the 3rd for the vinegar solution to drain in. To keep it from harming the plants underneath, but still allowing it to be used to clean the concrete.
I love Gaura! I think it is so graceful & beautiful like a bouquet of a bunch of little pink dancing butterflies (& your word ethereal is a perfect word for this lovely plant!). My issue w/ it is I can never get it to take in my garden. I am in zone 8 (Western Oregon) & all the major nurseries around her supply them & say that they are hardy to our zone. I plant them just like the tags say, w/ the proper light & water conditions & they either 1) won't last a month or 2) come back the next year like the perennial they are supposed to be. So I sadly just gave up!☹ I don't think I've had this issue w/ anything else I have ever grown.
That fountain is gorgeous! Nice job cleaning it up! I have a tip for you on the algae... put something copper in the fountain: pieces of copper pipe, copper flashing, etc. the copper inhibits the growth of algae. I have a solid copper birdbath and it’s never had algae in it! Some people say you can use pennies for a birdbath, but that fountain might need more and the pipe or flashing would definitely make cleaning easier than pennies lol! I love your videos, and your property is gorgeous!
Hi Laura. I have a fountain and read that on occasion when it starts to get green you can add a little peroxide to the water can kill algae. It doesn’t harm birds (not sure of plants). Might help with the maintenance. By the way I LOVE your videos. You saved my plants and gave love to gardening ❤️😊🌸
I understand the heat and not being able to work in it. And adding our Texas humidity, it’s just unbearable. I love gahra and planted some this year in front of my dalia. I love it. Your fountain is beautiful. Have a great weekend. 👏🏻💕👏🏻
the fountain looks like it's floating or being carried by a sea of pink - so beautiful. Thanks for the hard work and all! So appreciated. :) Ciao from Sicily
(2nd follow up comment): You can also use "Fountain Block" or "Pond Block" to drop down in one of the bowls of the fountain. They disintegrate slowly and can help keep things in check until you clean your pumps and filters every 6 or 8 weeks or so. =^..^=
@@Wingate8000 ... Well funny that you mention that concept, in that I've been doing the same thing (in my everyday life now), as if Laura and Aaron and Russell (and Benjamin) are personal friends of mine! I've been watching her videos for about a month now and am catching up with previous ones, so I feel like I'm getting to know them. I work in my garden, thinking ”WWLD"? She is in the forefront of my mind in all of my gardening tasks. Am I a stalker?!! 🙃 Just with Martha Stewart, I am a hopeless fan! I am a seasoned gardener but have learned so much in this following! (...and yes, I adore cats!) =^..^=
Spectacular! We had a fountain on the farm... every time we entered, we said, we should get the fountain working. What a difference! Also to add some fairy lights around it. Would have been a very welcoming sight when one arrives to the property.. xx..
I have a tiny fountain and fight with algae growth within days. Am I doing something wrong? Even a professional additive (animal friendly) doesn’t solve my issue. (Michigan...hot humid)
I LOVE the aged look on a fountain! Mine looks like a couple of hundred years old! My home style is an old southwest territorial as well so that works so well! The faded concrete color looks more authentic as well. That is a beautiful fountain! I want to just sit in all of the resting places in your gardens, i dont think that i could pick a favorite!
I've always thought of it as your Arbour Garden, as I love the entrance. Thanks for getting down and dirty for us with this video. It shows the reality of gardening, but despite this, you'll always be a Superwoman to all of us xox
On the fence about Gaura , thinking I’d go with a more formal look. That said , I bought a Gaura a few weeks ago and hearing that the bees love it makes it a keeper. Thanks for sharing 👍❤️😊
I like it, and yes it needs the proper space to grow. I planted 5 very small plants this spring, something kept pulling up two of them and they eventually died, and we have had a very long hot dry spell, so three are alive, but still struggling, i found a three color variegated one i wanted to try, still figuring out if it will work, but i planted for the bees.

I had never heard of Gaura until I saw it here ....I love it & plant many. The white hasn’t done as well for me in SWOhio. I wondered if Bees were in there with you....the Gaura is beautiful with the lovely fountain.
I love your gardens and you help me a lot with some of my own garden questions. I recently moved to a house with boxwoods, fountains and garden lights . All of which needed help . My new garden is much more manicured than my country farm garden that just need a clean up once a month with little attention. I have steep learning curve.
Oh, this made me smile. I try and do things, but my husband has learned over the decades that he is MUCH better at most of what I need done. I have electrocuted myself, nearly cut off several fingers, and knocked myself out cold trying to do it on my own. I also can't estimate anything. I ordered a load of topsoil one time, did the math and everything, and ordered so much that it was two feet deep all over the front yard. :P
Such a pretty little garden - a pocket of pretty. ❤️ One of my favorite areas. Love the gate entrance and fountain and the gaura really does make it look magical 🥰.
Love your way of keeping us calm on the other side of the US. It does look beautiful. Great job. Could that be iron in the water making those rusty spots. That's what we deal with in our well water. Stay safe and stay well sweet lady.
I don’t think those are spider webs, eastern fall web worms make those webs to nest their eggs. And their little caterpillars and eventually moths are eating everything in my garden right now. Hate them!
If you put copper pennies (pre 1982) in your birdbath it helps hinder algae growth. I add pennies to my clear vases that I use to propagate houseplant cuttings which sit in my kitchen window. It really does work. Apple cider vinegar may provide a few vitamins and minerals for the birds. But regardless you still have to routinely clean your water features regularly especially if your temperatures rise above 90 degrees and they are located in the sun. Great video Laura!
I can't imagine not appreciating gaura. It's so pretty. One common name is "whirling (or twirling?) butterflies." I wish it was a perennial in my zone. Laura, your video has shown me I do NOT want a fountain. That really was gross. And you just plunged your hand into that brackish water. Pew!
Kate Hillenbrand , I almost bought a fountain the other day and I’m not going to now! I couldn’t stop laughing at the end when she had this little worm on her arm and she said “gross” and yet she did not hesitate and plunging her hand into that terrible brackish water! Her cat was smart to stay away while the work was being done!
I have a fountain that grew algae so I visited our local fountain shop where I bought a little bottle of anti algae I use a tablespoon about once a month and voila, no algae. Fountains are work. They must be filled, or topped off with water every few days if you run them daily in the summer. However they add such a lovely atmosphere to summer evenings, makes you want to have dinner and enjoy the evening outside each time we run it.
I love it when you share maintenance work, as a garden beginner it is hard to guess how much work your piece of land is. Could you maybe do a week in my life vlog, where we can see what you do all day, including chicken care, cooking, filming and everything else you are doing?
Oh my goodness Laura, what a GLORIOUS SOUND!! Third time's the charm!! I'm so happy that you don't have to go and get another pump!! I'm impatient when it comes to not knowing how to get the rust off of it, so I would have brought out my stainless steel scrubber to see if that "erased" the rust stains, but I'm glad you are not being as impulsive as I would be, under the same circumstances 😉 Love your channel and I'm thrilled that you are expecting again!! You and Aaron are awesome parents ❤️
I actually think the rust staining on the fountain sort of works with the like the "fence" gate, since it's got that same rusty-colored splotching. Adds to that rustic feel with the hardscape, imo.
This is how I start my morning off with some garden answer just wonderful.......same thing happen in my fountain ⛲️ in my garden also, usually have to clean it out constantly in the summertime.

That garden is so beautiful with the fountain running!💚 I wondered if you have filters on your water system? I grew up on a small farm with well water that had a LOT of iron in it, when we first moved in it could even leave orange marks on white laundry. My parents put a filter in the pump house and another one inside the house where the water came in and it made a HUGE difference. I imagine Aaron's already done something like that, but thought I'd mention just in case. Also wanted to thank you both for all the inspiration and knowledge you have provided me.🌿💚🌿 You've really upped my garden game, and made me look like a genius to my neighbors😉 I always recommend you all to everyone, and now that I've got my mom hooked, we often have conversations like "Well Laura said...supertunia...BT...Rose RX...fertilizer day..."🙂

Oh boy did I put up a fight I didnt do it so why do I have to reach into 1ft of used nasty engine oil?! But he was my supervisor I had to otherwise I'd be held accountable for disobeyed orders... So I reached for the nasty oil smeared wrench and even had to clean it off ! But made me realize that being a mechanic is messy and sometimes I just gotta get grimy and gross to finish the mission. 😉👌👍Thanks for the memory; )
Have you tried a few drops of hydrogen peroxide in the fountain water? It's safe for the wildlife but it slows down the formation of algae and it prolongs the life of the pump.
I was wondering about this, too! Bleach can also be safe, if used in the correct quantities, because it only takes a few days to fully convert to water I think. I read that recently when researching rainwater collection and storage. But may not be the right choice if birds and butterflies have access to it all the time?

Laura, you can use a liquid pond algicide as a regular routine during the hot summer months. This will make your job of putting the fountains to "bed" so much easier at the end of the season.
Hi Laura, CLR will take the rust off and it shouldn't hurt anything, you can also use it on coffee pots. Just follow the instructions on the container and completely rinse. CLR stand for calcium, lime and rust. Remover. Hopefully this helpful

Adding white vinegar to the water in fountains and birdbaths, helps prevent algae and mosquito larvae from forming.

And it also will make the hard water stains less worse, too 😉

I've planted two this year after watching and neither of them have rebloomed. Do I need to deadhead?
i actually dont mind the rust stains,..kinda just adds to the whole "patina" vibe :-)
I totally love the patina look as well!
I agree. It matches the arbor over there too.
That's what I said! Just gives that aged patina look to it like it's been sitting there for years! Like a fountain you would find in ancient European town or city!
Ramibu 2 that's it exactly!🙂
We use that too for the green on our siding. Love it.
I out a small chlorine tab in mine. it's a 3 teir.
Linda Sarcone does it hurt the birds?🙂
Amy Eitelberg I was wondering that too but I think the water in the fountain is too deep for the birds to bathe in.
Cindy, I have birds that frequent my fountain to bathe or drink so I want to be careful 🙂
@@amyeitelberg1598 it's a tab about as bug as a quarter half in thick...i have a deep 3 teir fountain..doesnt hurt birds
You are a champ! The way you fix things!! The fountain is gorgeous!
@@emmajo5303 If you let it get on the plants, yes. But, if you rinsed the fountain really well it would be so diluted it wouldn't be an issue. ~ Lisa
I took one look at that water and said "self - ponytail and long kitchen gloves before sticking my hands in that water". :-) Great job!
And some rain boots
Oh happy day! One of my favorite things in your garden! The whole garden looks so magical🧚🏻🥰 I love the sound of the fountain in your gardens.
Proof that, yes, gardening can be gross as well as gorgeous 😘
That fountain is gorgeous! Nice job cleaning it up! I have a tip for you on the algae... put something copper in the fountain: pieces of copper pipe, copper flashing, etc. the copper inhibits the growth of algae. I have a solid copper birdbath and it’s never had algae in it! Some people say you can use pennies for a birdbath, but that fountain might need more and the pipe or flashing would definitely make cleaning easier than pennies lol! I love your videos, and your property is gorgeous!
It looks so beautiful! I love that gate/arbor there too. The guara does have an ethereal look.
Good morning, I'm so excited to see this fountain running! I planted Gaura and I love them.
Pink?
Take it easy Laura! Be careful in the heat and using ladders! May the gardening god keep you safe!
(2nd follow up comment): You can also use "Fountain Block" or "Pond Block" to drop down in one of the bowls of the fountain. They disintegrate slowly and can help keep things in check until you clean your pumps and filters every 6 or 8 weeks or so.
=^..^=
My neighbour's cat seems to pop up whenever I'm in the garden and I can't help but think of Laura and Russell whenever he appears :)
(...and yes, I adore cats!)

Spectacular! We had a fountain on the farm... every time we entered, we said, we should get the fountain working. What a difference! Also to add some fairy lights around it. Would have been a very welcoming sight when one arrives to the property.. xx..
Wow Laura ... Amazing you are really a hardworking woman💕💕
Hi Laura! Love the flowers & fountain. So peaceful. Hope you will fix the Hebe Fountain soon. I really love that one.
Ahh! The suspense of whether it would start! 😆 Such a satisfying project to accomplish!
Laura I love that you are so real. This stuff happens to us all and it is fun to know you too have real things happen. ❤️
What about using a pressure washer in the fountain?
I agree, I would use a pressure washer. I use it on mine several times per year. No chemicals or harsh products used.
You are such a sweet heart Laura.
Thanks for yourself and Aaron and your love of gardening.
I have a tiny fountain and fight with algae growth within days. Am I doing something wrong?
Even a professional additive (animal friendly) doesn’t solve my issue. (Michigan...hot humid)
Oh! Laura....nothing is impossible job for you! You are so great!
If I had attempted to clean that while pregnant I would have added to the green water with my puke! Strong lady.
Thanks Laura (and Aaron) for all your garden (and family) inspiration❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
On the fence about Gaura , thinking I’d go with a more formal look. That said , I bought a Gaura a few weeks ago and hearing that the bees love it makes it a keeper. Thanks for sharing 👍❤️😊
Carmen Bailey I liked the gaura better when she showed just the one plant, not crazy about the gaura in the garden at all.
I love the way it looks with so many plants but I've not had much luck with it. However, going to use some seeds and direct sow it.
The annual gaura she planted a year or two ago (Caroline Petite gaura?) had a small growth habit, no?
I like it, and yes it needs the proper space to grow. I planted 5 very small plants this spring, something kept pulling up two of them and they eventually died, and we have had a very long hot dry spell, so three are alive, but still struggling, i found a three color variegated one i wanted to try, still figuring out if it will work, but i planted for the bees.
@@carlaradke4066 I used one plant as a thriller in my back door containers everyone that comes stops and runs their hands thur it and says "What is this? Its beautiful.
I love how you keep your videos real. Thank You for that.
Some pump lingo for you:
Intake is called the suction.
Outtake is called the discharge.
The propeller is actually called the impeller.
She pronounces foliage "folage" and uses the word menagerie all the time incorrectly (including in this video) so she probably doesn't care😜.
@@mercury_rising As a long time viewer I'm aware of how she pronounces certain things. I hope my comment is useful to more than just her and Aaron. You read my comment, so hopefully you learned something new.
Thank you! I have a pump and have only used the word suction correctly. And that was by accident not because I knew it was the right word! 🤣 I took a screenshot of your answer so I can go back and remember the right words. 🙌🏻
@@stephanieosborne8312 I'm glad it helps and that you appreciate the knowledge. 😁
Laura let us know what the fountain manufacture tells you regarding the rust stain removal. Thanks
It inspires me how you fix things yourself and don't ask your husband like I do!
Ask him to teach you on the next one! My dad is pretty handy and I love asking his help so I can learn how to do it.
I planted guara because of you! 😂 I had never heard of it, but once I found it I had to snatch it up! I planted it along with some grasses & love it!
Jennifer Capes Same here! I love mine and it just gets prettier every year!
Love your way of keeping us calm on the other side of the US. It does look beautiful. Great job. Could that be iron in the water making those rusty spots. That's what we deal with in our well water. Stay safe and stay well sweet lady.
omg going with your hand on the spider webs. MY HERO.
I would literally pass out among the white flowers. Russell would find me. I'm terrified of them.
I would have used one of those brushes, simply because we have some rather nasty spiders here. She is no wimp!
Yup that was a NO for me too.😊
I thought the same thing. Lord have mercy I would have had a panic attack.
I don’t think those are spider webs, eastern fall web worms make those webs to nest their eggs. And their little
caterpillars and eventually moths are eating everything in my garden right now. Hate them!
Laura, I love that not only can you plant flowers give expertise on growing things, but you can handle wrenches, pliers and fix motors! You go girl!
Laughed so hard when Russell appeared "haven't seen you for 30 minutes!" Best line ever!!
One common name is "whirling (or twirling?) butterflies."
I wish it was a perennial in my zone.
Much like a plumber cleaning a toilet, she should have a shop vac to suck all the gross water out, THEN do the work. Live and learn, haha
Am I the only one who likes the video first before watching it? 😅
NO.

Oh my goodness Laura, what a GLORIOUS SOUND!! Third time's the charm!! I'm so happy that you don't have to go and get another pump!!
I'm impatient when it comes to not knowing how to get the rust off of it, so I would have brought out my stainless steel scrubber to see if that "erased" the rust stains, but I'm glad you are not being as impulsive as I would be, under the same circumstances 😉
Love your channel and I'm thrilled that you are expecting again!! You and Aaron are awesome parents ❤️
I actually think the rust staining on the fountain sort of works with the like the "fence" gate, since it's got that same rusty-colored splotching. Adds to that rustic feel with the hardscape, imo.
Those roses by the arbor are so pretty. Love to look at your work. You do such an amazing job.
This is how I start my morning off with some garden answer just wonderful.......same thing happen in my fountain ⛲️ in my garden also, usually have to clean it out constantly in the summertime.
It really look gross sick 😷

Great job Laura! That was so satisfying to watch especially the anticipation of whether the motor would start! 😆
The stain on the fountain makes it look “ antiquesh “ and it adds to it’s character. Beautiful. 👌🌹❤️😘👍
I also appreciate the character of aged things and really like the natural aging the “stains” impart. Not to everyone’s taste, however, to be sure.
Yes, I love ❤️ the look too.
I thought it added a nice patina as well.

When you were anxious about that first dip in the gross water reminded me of when I was a Private at my first duty station...
@@twobluestripes be careful with bleach because it can burn through rubber and if I'm not mistaken, some of those motor parts are rubber, no?

Laura, you can use a liquid pond algicide as a regular routine during the hot summer months. This will make your job of putting the fountains to "bed" so much easier at the end of the season.
Hi Laura,
CLR will take the rust off and it shouldn't hurt anything, you can also use it on coffee pots. Just follow the instructions on the container and completely rinse. CLR stand for calcium, lime and rust. Remover. Hopefully this helpful
