Maybe replay crisis core, he's actually a charming person... sort of friendly toward Angeal and Zack... approachable is the correct word... He only changed after Nibelheim event. They expanded on his character in more depth in ever crisis the mobile game. Hence this is aligned with his character development.

Maybe Im wrong but in the original game cloud was actually ashamed of being just a soldier and he was hiding his face. I played the original game a long time ago. Now that I think about it, the soldier that saved tifa is probably the real cloud. I should play this remake.

This whole thing is weird. It makes Sephiroth seem very friendly. We didn’t really see this in Crisis Core.

It is a different continuaty due to sephiroth and the main party taking actions that alter the timeline so that could be it - i seem to remember him as fairly passive but somewhat caring sometimes of his fellow soldiers. Idk - it contrasts with his radical personality shift to pure evil durign the nibelheim burning scene
Crisis Core was bad in general, even the new version, voice acting was awful and what little attempts used to show characters wasn't done well at all, even Zack.
Edit: basically Crisis Core was lazy.
