Absolutely brilliant! A beauty to boot! This reminds me of an article in an old mother earth news magazine, I think late 1970s or early 1980s where I guy showed how you could convert an inline-four-cylinder car engine to run as a steam engine. Anyway, thank you for sharing this with us and happy boating!
Bonjour, Wonderful and uncomon steam machine, I like it very much ! Steam without leaks is not steam, we live the same issues with our RC models. A sunny weather should have been the best.I hope this boat will navigate a lot. Edward is a lucky man. Amicalement, Raphaël
Congratulations! What an achievement and (although it's a real cliché) you've got 'poetry in motion' there! Although you know differently (because of the work involved in making the vessel) it seems such a relaxing form of propulsion....indeed it seems effortless. Many thanks for sharing the first trial and the Cumbrian weather too. Rob.
And I thought steam engines were simple things, this has more moving parts than my V6 Saab with double overhead cams and 24 valves, anyway great unit for the climate, keeps you warm as you steam ahead in the pissing rain !
The very earliest days of the "Power Boat"... Must've seemed like Super High Tech when this tech hit the water. Crazy...and Great all at the same time. My how technology has progressed...this took A LOT of Work, Knowledge, Babysitting and Work...did I mention Work? Wonderful Craft here...Great Job!
94 ft.lb of torque @ 360 rpm. In comparison, your boy-racer Nissan Micra with its 1.4 litre 99BHP engine can barely manage 90 ft.lb @ 6000 rpm. If you look at my video called "Triple Expansion Steam Engine running with a brake under Load" you will see the brake test for this engine.
SnyderColorcast In order to get 470HP with 470ft.lb torque the engine needs to rev at 5300 rpm. Knowing what American engines are like, it will last around 5 minutes doing that. The engine in the boat above should still be running fine in 100+ years time, as has been proven by similar engines which are 100+ years old.
Absolutely wonderful!! I am so pleased that Edward finally got his boat! and in time for the rally! Nice to see that engine in a boat at long last as well after seeing it many times in bits during the building process. I'd love to come and have a ride :)
Seriously, there is one word to describe that boat: Epic. (That's somewhat more than outstanding.) :) Congratulations! I would love to go out steam cruising in that beauty. There are millions upon millions of people on this planet who will never do anything even approaching that epic feat. I have two questions. Have you named her and how fast will she go?
Is that Lake Windermere? Didn't they used to attempt speed records there? Bit of lovely irony, that. Gorgeous launch, well worth the small amount of time and work.
That's like riding a boiling kettle waiting to scald you in places you haven't even dreamt about! I would want to enclose that whole mess in a kevlar box!! Quite quiet tho
How many HP and what prop size does it drive . Power to weight looks to be 4 times more than modern Diesel solutions . However cant beat the puff puff factor
Awesome..!. I love seeing the technology of yesteryear kept alive . This is how Men would go out to sea in vessels such as these, and were able to provide for their Families. Thank you for sharing this, so our Children can see how things were back then. i can only hope that technology doesnt surpass man's ability and knowledge, to the point where he will destroy himself. Technology may grow in leaps and bounds, but we will NEVER have God's understanding. May God bless us all. Amen..
Really? Why bring god into it? Which one though, there are so many however it makes no difference and is irrelevant to this fine video. Humanity will chug along as it always has. Today is tomorrow's yesterday. So Big Angel, enjoy this time on earth for life is but a dream.
What a Beautiful, inspiring, poet piece of finely crafted machinery. I have one overwhelming thought upon watching this vid - God Bless the internal combustion engine.
maltelec With apologies to S. T. Coledrige; 'Batteries, batteries everywhere And my useful payload shrinks The equivalent energy in Gasoline Is a whole lot lighter, I think.'
modelleg and Thelastminstrel Thelastminstrel was saying that this coal firing set up is much harder than turning a key on an infernal combustion engine. However everyone forgets that the first petrol cars were as bad if not worse than steam powered versions for breaking down and being generally unreliable. If steam propulsion had as much money thrown at research as petrol and diesel has had, it would be just as good (if not better) then Petrol and Diesel cars are today. The energy value of coal is not much less than gasoline (Petrol). The difference is the boiler adds much weight. This can be changed but like the IC engine, not easy to get right. Fuel Energy Density Coal: 24 MJoules/kg. Gas: 46 MJoules/kg. Uranium: 76,000,000 MJoules/kg *Figures taken from xkcd's Log Scale
The shipping companies moved to IC on a cost basis. Efficiency has little to do with economy, it just sometimes follows the same path. Other times it doesn't.
What a lovely vessel, apart from the coal hole which must have been designed by either a gynaecologist or Quasimodo, still a great day out. I think the next thing should be a canopy
I have mostly to do with traction engines and railway locomotives but this marine engine is something other I do have a model Stuart turner engine similar to that one and it seems very well indeed
I could imagine my wife saying, you’re getting your Boots and Pants all wet! Frankly my dear, I don’t give a dam! Yep, I messed that up. Gone with the Wind! African Queen, what’s the difference!
Where did you get that lovely triple expansion engine? It's a beauty! At what psi does it operate? How long to get up steam? Great video, happy steaming!
He was obviously a very talented individual, it's a real work of art-as is your launch. My steamboat is only 2.5 feet long but on the other hand it only takes 5-10 minutes to get steam up! Thanks for the reply!
Which means - if I understand this correctly - high pressure cylinder exhaust runs a bigger medium pressure cylinder whose lower pressure exhaust runs the third and largest. Is that more or less it?
+Thomas Teague Vertical fire tube. Nothing special. Their is an episode of Scrap Heap Challenge where they are making Steam Cars. The round vertical boiler on that is one of three which were made identical, this boat uses one of the others.
Yes I should have waited to see more of the video before commenting, three cranks was a give away. However, as the diameters of the cylinder heads are of different diameters I assume it is a triple expansion engine?
Compound engine. Thanks for keeping this piece of history alive.
Only its a Triple expansion.
Absolutely brilliant! A beauty to boot! This reminds me of an article in an old mother earth news magazine, I think late 1970s or early 1980s where I guy showed how you could convert an inline-four-cylinder car engine to run as a steam engine.

That engine in operation is beautiful to behold and the wood work of the boat matches it perfectly.

A work of art. must have been a very proud moment. Thankyou for sharing.
The gods were smiling. Even the sun came out briefly. Good work and perseverance. Ronn
I worked on boiler for my Bill Harris steamroller today. Magnificent Boat!
You must be proud of this accomplishment . That's a beautiful piece of machinery . Outstanding .

+Rob Mannion We are so used to the rain here we don't notice it half the time.
Beautiful to watch. In Australia we'd love to see rain like that! The process of stoking the fire did look a bit awkward!
Australians have always appreciated engineering.
November 2019 Congratulations. Bloody lovely stuff, you bastard. Not jealous at all.
And I thought steam engines were simple things, this has more moving parts than my V6 Saab with double overhead cams and 24 valves, anyway great unit for the climate, keeps you warm as you steam ahead in the pissing rain !
A lot of long hours of hard work, then to be greeted with the pitter patter of English "liquid sunshine" on maiden voyage day.
We are well used to the English Summers.
And then hours of hard work to clean the boiler and engine

Hi Good to see that the sun came out to Shine on your endeavours I imagine that she has a fair turn of speed with the triple Cheers.
WHAT A FABULOUS BOAT ! YOU SHOULD BE VERY PROUD OF YOURSELF ! I COULD ONLY DREAM OF OWNING SOMETHING LIKE THIS ! BRAVO AND THUMBS UP !
Beautiful engine and overall a pretty quiet ride. Not a lot of room for the operator or passengers. The decking is yacht quality and very beautiful.
Love your steam siren! Beautiful engine.
Man thats dedication. Its pouring rain and you guys are still out there trying to light a fire ;-)
Looks to be more a labor of love , than practicality.. great video
my whole year just got better, I am off to fire a boiler thanks
Beautiful Engine and Boiler. I find Teflon tape rolls up inside piping. I use #5 soft set. Rector Seal or Blue Block. No leaks!
Looks like it has lots of torque. Fascinating.

The Boat and Engine look great, congratulation to everyone involved.
I look forward to seeing the result of your labors in the flesh soon. Frank K.
Loved it all, but that steam sireen took the biscuit. 😂
I wish they would talk about how it works, who made it, and so on.
Absolutely wonderful!! I am so pleased that Edward finally got his boat! and in time for the rally! Nice to see that engine in a boat at long last as well after seeing it many times in bits during the building process. I'd love to come and have a ride :)
ended up replaying 5:38 a few times. but the boat is very satisfying

I have two questions. Have you named her and how fast will she go?
The boat is called Whippet and it will do about 8mph.
Watching that, I feel a "Mr Toad" moment coming on..! Real engineering.. well done!
Pip Piperade poop poop
It's all about the voyage, not the destination!
Is that Lake Windermere? Didn't they used to attempt speed records there? Bit of lovely irony, that. Gorgeous launch, well worth the small amount of time and work.
Vorrei tanto vivere come voi. Mi sono gustato questo bellissimo video. Complimenti.
What a beautiful engine, and it runs like a top! Bravo!
Beautiful boat and an outstanding engine.
Super sweet little steam boat. 👍

Look carefully. See the future. See the past. Terrific thank you.
one word for you guys ( beautiful ) I’m green with envy well done 👍
The white stick is a standard fire lighter from the supermarket. Usually we use a BBQ bag.
It sounded like the Landrover on the launching trolley was steam powered as well :)
...I gotta have one of those steam whistles...A.C.Feuerhelm...thank you for posting
“Just a thought wouldn’t be easier to pour that in?” (Next scene) starts pouring the oil in
Have plenty of good trips in your steam powered boat.....Fred
nice work, nice work re-using potato/onion sacks for wood. impressed here! keep up the good work!
Well done.... It looks lovely.

Infernal combustion engines are horrible noisy smelly dirty things. Electric is much better.

Thelastminstrel Actually, steam power is EXternal combustion.

It's just like a model of a full-size marine triple.
Bravo!
Fantastic engine, a little time machine that boat .
Fascinating, but I'm beginning to se why steam went out of favor....
I could imagine my wife saying, you’re getting your Boots and Pants all wet! Frankly my dear, I don’t give a dam! Yep, I messed that up. Gone with the Wind! African Queen, what’s the difference!
Do you find that works best ?
What's the purpose of the largish brass wheel on the inside of the starboard side wall, between the boiler and engine?
Its a painted yellow wheel and it is for steering
Beautiful steam boat and boiler. What coal you using?
Typically Welsh steam coal
Fantastic!! The best boat i have ever seen: )
Makes a hot bulb engine look very attractive.
How much did the triple expansion cost?
Where did you get that lovely triple expansion engine? It's a beauty! At what psi does it operate? How long to get up steam? Great video, happy steaming!
My dad built the engine. Runs at around 150psi. Depending on who is firing it usually takes an hour to get going.
He was obviously a very talented individual, it's a real work of art-as is your launch. My steamboat is only 2.5 feet long but on the other hand it only takes 5-10 minutes to get steam up! Thanks for the reply!
What kind of fuel are you using for getting it started at 3:40?
Is this really worth it. I don’t think so.
Was smiling the whole video - in fact still smiling! Thanks for showing it to us!
The engine, looks like a triple expansion, is that correct?
+Leif Vejby Yes it is a triple expansion.
maltelec
Thanks! A bit of overdoing it for a launch, but a wonderful piece of machinery!! Thanks again!
Which means - if I understand this correctly - high pressure cylinder exhaust runs a bigger medium pressure cylinder whose lower pressure exhaust runs the third and largest. Is that more or less it?
That's exactly it
The shit people get up to to pass time is amazing. Wait, what am I doing watching this video at 9:14 on a Friday morning?
surprised to see engineer use an adjustable spanner I THINK those boys have got everyone fooled that's a still not a steam engine??
I plan to do something similar. how big was your propellor and how many?
Single propellor , three blades , 20 inch diameter and 36 inch pitch . Fuller details given on the Steamboat Association of Great Britain website .
Thank you
Brad Chapman
Peter Speck ?
Single prop , 3xblades , 20" diameter , 36" pitch .
The boat is missing some kind of tent cover.
+maltelec What kind of type is that? What are the specifications? Spare foot, Horsepower, dimensions, etc.
+Thomas Teague www.steamboatassociation.org.uk/page-1117882
thanks. do you have any additional info? In particular I'm looking for the square footage of the heating surface and the boiler horsepower.
+Thomas Teague I don't know the boiler details. The engine is designed to be 15IHP at 150psi.
Ok thank you for your help. I should have proofread my initial comment before sending it. I meant to ask "What kind of boiler is that?"
+Thomas Teague Vertical fire tube. Nothing special. Their is an episode of Scrap Heap Challenge where they are making Steam Cars. The round vertical boiler on that is one of three which were made identical, this boat uses one of the others.
Very very cool
So how much charcoal does it use on the average?
1 very small bag. Needed only to get it started. After that it used coal. You can start it on sticks and coal but it takes a long time to get going.
very nice. is that a triple expansion engine?
Yes it is.
@@maltelec Is that the first Windermere launch with a triple expansion engine?
@@bingola45 No I would imagine Otto would be.
@@maltelec A steel-hulled triple-expansion Windermere launch.
They say you learn something new every day...
Needs more pitch on the screw.
Which screw?
paradisemace1 that’s what she said.
Wonderful!
I've seen a triple expansion engine but this seems a bit bigger??
Don't confuse the piston valves for pistons. This engine has three pistons/cylinders, two piston valves and one slide valve.
Yes I should have waited to see more of the video before commenting, three cranks was a give away. However, as the diameters of the cylinder heads are of different diameters I assume it is a triple expansion engine?
@@johnmartin6178 Yes, it is a triple expansion. Known as an Elliott Bay.
It's raining!
Spotted 1 engineering flaw. Not fitting a rain canopy
I think I’m wearing a helmet and face shield so when it blows up I can still see to pull all the splinters out of my aching body.
Looks like a nasty day for maiden voyage. Especially with no top on boat.
Beautiful.
Beautiful
Couldn't have picked a nicer day for it! Lol
i love your steam boat I subscribe for u thanks for the vid
No wonder they have monster in Loch Ness, guy's I am jealous. God luck
So She has a compound engine?
Triple Expansion engine.
superbe !! c'est une chance !!
I came for the steamboat, but stayed for the bantz.
I want one!
Why doesn't it have a roof? That way, the launch won't fill up in heavy rain.
There are holes in the bottom to let the water out again.
Nice land rover
couldn't you have chosen a less rainy day ? Watching that dripping and dropping makes me nervous and I feel sorry for the boat and it's engine.
only got to look at them to see they are trashed
Another world,another life......
I can see how people can lose their body parts from the open mechanics...
so cool
Ahh I see. Thank you :)
