Live Match Fishing - River Hull Beverley Shipyard - Northern River Masters

- After a bit of a hiatus from filming, I'm back with another live match fishing video, this time from the River Hull Beverley Shipyard section fishing in the Northern River Masters qualifier 14.
The River Hull is tidal and therefore it can run off hard, very hard! In order to tackle this river, a variety of methods can be deployed and feeding choices are critical - what you feed, how you feed it and when you feed it.
With limited knowledge of the venue and never having seen it before, I opt to feed predominantly by bait dropper, but when the tide turns, the river can stand still and at this point, it's possible to loose feed by hand without sending fish miles down the swim.
Because the River Hull is constantly evolving, both in depth, direction and power of flow, it presents a real challenge trying to stay in touch with fish and as such a variety of rigs and tweaks are required to present the bait effectively.
My choices on the day were a maggot feeder to introduce some bait initially and then to switch on to the big stick float and later the flat float. The flat float fishing rigs I setup were 5g and 15g Colmic Topedo floats, shotting patterns and depth were adjusted as the flow increased.
Tidal river fishing is truly a challenge for an angler and it really gets the old grey matter firing. If you like the video and want to see more live match fishing content like this, please subscribe to the HOOKED Fishing Channel here:

TIGHT LINES!
Great video John the best part about your channel is that you fish a variety of venues, places ive heard of but never personally fished this makes for real great viewing
Thanks for keeping me entertained keep em coming mate.
Thanks Phil, I like to mix it up, it keeps the fishing interesting for me and a bit of the excitement of the unknown as well as providing you guys with a variety of venues and methods, I might not always get it bang on but at least you can interpret it and should you choose to visit one of the venues, you'll have an idea if what did/didn't work.
Well done John 👏 cant beat watching anglers bagging up on natural venues proper fishing
Thanks Pottsy, give me 5lb of silvers on the river over 100lb of commercial mud pigs every day of the week 🎣
That's a good score in my book mate , out of 36 you came 10th WELL DONE!!!"!!.
Thanks, I hadn't actually worked that out myself 😉
A nice hard fished match John well done
Thanks Keith. 👍
That's a proper hardcore venue mate, you did well to be fair....always next time
It sure is Scott - you'll have to give it a go some time. 🎣
Great to see your uploading again! Greetings from the Netherlands
Hey Dieter, thanks for watching! Tight Lines pal 🎣
You worked hard for that John…good result…look forward to your future video on that venue 👍
Thanks bud, can't wait to fish it in more favourable conditions after a few frosts. 🎣🎣👍👍
hi john we missed you, wow good weather and another great video . cheers stan in rainy california .
Thanks Stan, the weather has turned a bit now, the mornings are really dark and the clocks need to go back but the fishing is finally improving now we're getting some fresh water through the rivers. I've got a video from the Trent for next week and this weekend I'm on the Calder so plenty to look forward too. Make sure you get your Nikwax coating on 😉
Proper fishing John, well done under difficult conditions.
Thank you Clive, tight lines mucka 🎣👍
great effort on a river you had no idea with and all the weed to put up with as well great vid again top angler
Thanks. You can't learn if you don't turn up, I fancied giving it a go, a few pleasure sessions practicing and trying a few different feeds out and I think I'd get the hang of it. The weed was awkward, it definitely hindered the catch rate particularly in the last hour. I think I needed a shorter rod with me to run a stick right down the inside and stay clear of it and maybe pick a few fish up like that.
Always a pleasure , keep em coming bud
Thanks Dave 👍 More to come!
Good video John, nice to see all the different venues and methods you use.
Glad you enjoy them Ian, thanks for watching pal 👍
Great video, nice to have you back on you tube Alan, always glad when your put another match on screen, keep it up Alan.
Ian in the scottish borders
Thanks Ian - but I'm not Alan Norrish - my name's John Murray and I'm an Angling Addict 😉🤣
Nice video, glad to see you back and what a cool industrial looking bit of river
Thanks Chris, it's certainly urban fishing and a challenging river to master - need a few more goes at it for sure.
Another fantastic effort Allan, keep trying and the rewards will come 🎣
🤣it's Fred to you Gino
@@HOOKEDFishingChannel No it’s Alfred now 🤣
Great video john
Thanks for watching Paul👍
Great to see you back John. Good effort on a really challenging venue, the locals are very hard to beat. Good luck in the rest of the qualifiers.🎣👍
Thanks Phil 👍. Yes they certainly know what they're doing in there, a few more sessions on the Hull and I might be knocking on the door next time.
Another Entertaining watch mate cheers 👍
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching Steve.
Great match, lovely to see the river Hull in the masters. There are some great fish in there, barbel, ide didn't show today, unlucky. When the tide turns it can drop really fast lol.
I'm looking forward to trying it over winter - journey and weather permitting. Yes some of the local lads told me it wasn't running all that hard and thought the barrier may be partially down - it was the biggest tide of the year I think but I didn't need the 15g rig in the end.
@@HOOKEDFishingChannel On some of the big tides your sat at the top of the bank, and struggle to hold bottom with 100g feeders!
@@hullebikerfishing Blimey Charlie! Think I'll give those conditions a miss!
Well done matey 👍🏻 personally I think you worked the hell out of your peg mate, lovely net of fish there, on to the next one 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks Mark, I felt I could've had a bit more out of it, but staying in touch with the fish as the flow and depth changes is a real challenge. I'll be a bit more clued up next time and I guess at some point I'll have to try groundbaiting it but the bait dropper seemed the safest option on the day.
Welcome back John you've been missed considering it was your first time on the venue you had some nice fish I must admit it did look like a scene from mad Max but full of fish good luck on the next one stay safe.
Thanks Nico, it's nice to be back, I missed talking to myself 🤣 I've got a good video editing for you next week😉
@@HOOKEDFishingChannel thank you look forward to it
Well done pal thought you fished a very good match 👏especially first time on the river.look forward to next vid.cheers.
Thanks Albert 👍
Good fishing john !👍🎣
Thanks Tonton, I tried but it was a bit out of my comfort zone, need a few more sessions on that river to understand it.
strange fishing john one way then the other the tees was like that years ago ,you done well m8 for your first time
Thanks Tony, I don't think we had much chance in our area, the weights dropped off either side of the bridge in my zone which were tipped as the hot pegs. Some venue regulars fishing it too so they have the local knowledge so always knew I was on a hiding to nothing unless I drew a flyer but wanted to fish it for the experience. Can't say I particularly like tidal rivers and usually mucky sludgy banks, they're akward to fish, not too bad if you can time it so the whole session it's running one direction but it is what it is on the day.
Good match John you will do well on the bread in winter at ship yard or tickton if you manage to get down there just get the tides right. not too big
Thanks Melvin, now I know what the river looks like against the tide table, I can plan a session. Been fancying it for a few seasons, so will definitely make my way across for a go at some point once we've had some frosts.
Unlucky John
But welldone all the same on a new venue 👍👍
Cheers Darren, you can't learn if you don't turn up, I didn't have chance to get across for a practice but I think I gathered enough info to be prepared, just wasn't sure how to feed it.
@@HOOKEDFishingChannel
Paul Kozyra may be man to have a chat too bud as him n Jamie’s made a video on the hull the other year
And it’s another one of your venue I’ve fancied fishing for some time too ( seen it from road side when traveling around that area for work) 👍👍👍
Yeah, I see Paul at the matches but he fished Tickton when on the bread a bit later into winter which is apparently when the river really comes into its own, we were probably a bit early and I don't think the big tide and sun helped so I'll be planning a visit under better conditions, just hope I don't freeze to death ❄️🏔️
Unlucky mate you fished a good match see you at Linton
Thanks Clinton, hopefully I'll do it on the Calder first 🤣
Enjoyed that John.I'm really a big fish angler but over the last couple of years i've been match fishing.I have mastered the basics on the flat float but could you if you have the time explain the reason for overshotting it.It is something that I will need for my roach fishing on the Thames.
Thanks in advance
Hi Neil, sorry only just caught up with comments, sometimes YT hide them if they think they're spam. The reason for overshotting is that when the flow is so strong and you want to hold back, the flat float will ride up and there will be too much body out of the water making fish drop the bait on the bite due to resistance so you'll miss loads. Overshot until you can hold the float in position or inch it through and the tip of the float is either vertical or ever so slightly leant back without the body shwoing, if you run it through at pace it will sink. It means you can get away with a smaller float until such point it becomes ineffective and you then have to up the float size.
Not bad considering you haven't fished there before. Donkeys years since I fished there, not hard to catch something, but very hard to keep in touch with the fish as the tide turns.
Absolutely, it was a real challenge, you have to keep changing the rig shotting and depth and figure out how and when to feed - something I'm not sure I got right but at least I didn't blow the peg at the start.
Well done m8 gd vid 🎣
Thanks Anthony, soon be time for a few winter sessions at Raker 😉
Knowing the way you like to hoy in balls of ground bait got to say you surprised me ' in fairness you caught what was in front of you , can't ask for much more than that ' how many more qualifiers is there John ?
🤣it's called positive thinking Martin, maybe I was having a crisis of confidence going on the baitdropper🤷♂️. There's 2 more quali's, Calder this weekend and Linton on Ouse in a couple of weeks. I fancy the Calder, and I'll definitely be hoying some groundbait in 😉
@@HOOKEDFishingChannelhave you seen any match weights from Linton lately ?
@@martincallaghan8817 no but I've been told it's fishing well.
