I never water African Violets from the bottom. I never let them sit in water. My Violets grow like weeds for me. My Dad & my Grandmom always did it this way too. And if water gets on the leaf, it dries right up.

My primroses are not doing well. The new buds tend to dry out after the flowers have faded. Some buds may start blooming but eventually dry out. Please help.

evanstec1, Alice Chan, I believe you should check primrose type, I got some just like him but mine are partial & filtered sunlight, also in temperature higher than 80 degrees it is fairy easy for them to develop root rot, which is the softening of leafs and buds and a loss of color. & a formula of 20 3 15 fertilizer helps them bloom in the spring.

How do African violets survive in the wild if they don't like water on their leaves? What do they do when it rains?

I don't understand where this misconception got started but there is no reason why you can water them on the top. I live in a very dusty dry environment and it's hard to keep the leaves clean so I put a couple drops of dish soap in a spray bottle and blast the dirt off the leaves being careful to not allow too much soap to get in the soil. I then spray them off with clean soap free water. Then I set the plants in front of an electric fan for 20 minutes or so and make sure the leaves are nice and dry. I haven't seen any ill effect from this treatment at all. I guess if you're in a real humid environment the leaves might have a tendency to rot but that's not a problem here.
