It really works, taught me patience. Almost 3mos before the one leaf started babies 😨 My big plants are blooming better then ever, one has 15 blooms in a 4" violet pot. Just beautiful & full. Thank you
So Linda as you know, you are doing propagation making a duplicate of the plant you pulled the leaf from, where she is breeding/pollination of two parents to make a brand new cross. You will get one,plant/cutting and she will probably get thousands and thousands of seeds in each pod. Where she can then (when the pod is ripe), plant the seed, wait for germination, pick the best seedlings, and grow them out til blooming age, and pick the best of the best seedlings with best growth habit and blooms to show, register the cross of each seedling she likes as each seedlings will have it’s own variations in leaf color, texture, etc, plant growth, and bloom so she could get multiple high performing siblings. If the seedling(s) win lots of ribbons, it may be good enough to be tissue cultured to get thousands of duplicate plants, i.e., 5,000 plants from a single petiole in 3-4 months. For small volume - just pull leaves. You can tissue culture to get a high volume of plants to then sell leaves so us hobbyists can grow our own mature plant. It’s neat to grow your own cuttings, but breeding- well that’s a whole new level of excitement to wait and see what color combos (blooms and leaves) will result from each breeding. Each seedling will be slightly or immensely different from each other and their parents - just like children. Some may look like the mother, others the father...and then there are those that will be throwbacks to a distance relative - you never know. That’s the fun and excitement. Hope this helps any newbies confused and wondering why she is going to all this trouble when you can just stick a leaf in mix to get a new plant.
oh my god i came here for information and you've got, THE BIGGEST COOLEST AFRICAN VIOLET I'VE EVER SEEN!!! you've arranged them so prettily and they're so nice and you've given great information on how to pollinatec this plant thank you!!
Mr Appleton in “Sitting Pretty” used a bird’s feather to transfer pollen to his Iris beds. Loved that movie. Clifton Webb Maureen O’Hara and Robert Young. Such a classic
Excellent clear information on a fairly simple process..Thanks. When I pollinate my outdoors plants, I always make Buzzz sounds (like a bee). My mother did and I guess I grew up thinking that was a mystical part of the process. I wonder if I should Buzzzz when pollinating my AV's? Anyhow. Thanks Soo Neaty for this clear video. I love RUclips!
Your video help alot! Only have 1 pod, but it worked !!! Thanks!!!! 😄 worked in the first try. My flower is thriving so it took fast and saw results quick!
I take a leaf from two or three African violets, put them in a pot together, and the flowers will Bloom half of one color and half of the other. they are so pretty and it's fun to grow my own plant! 🌸👍😇
I’m not sure what you are saying. She isn’t trying to just have a pot with different colors in it. Of course if you put leaves from plants of different colors in a pot and you leave them to grow to adult plants blooming size, you will have different colors in one pot but again not what she is doing. . What she is doing is breeding 2 different plants to get a new variety - actual varieties, because the seed pod will produce tons of seed and the seedlings may have great variation. Most folks choose the best growing seedling after it blooms to have named as a new named variety. Most people only want one, plant per pot and go to great trouble to not let suckers and multiple plantlets in one pot. Anything not a single crown is destroyed (or reported in a another pot). She is breeding white on blue so the seedlings will hopefully have blue with white on the petals, or white with blue. Sometimes back genes will give you neither white or blue..a surprise. That’s the fun of breeding plants, or anything..dogs, horses, etc.
Once you get seed pods on your African violets what do you do then how do you know went to take the seedpod off and and what do you do with the seeds could you do a video to show us how to do that
fifi corina Thanks Fifi, I hope to get some more and then actually harvest the seeds and plant them and then see what the mix looks like! It will take 2-3 weeks for the seed pods to show. Let us see ! Fingers crossed.... !
I have tried very hard for 3 months to cross my violets. I use a small paint brush. I put my pollen in a piece of folded foil and get it from dried flowers. How long do you think pollen lasts for? I pollinate the flowers once they open. Am I doing something wrong?
I only did this as an experiment, and I got seed pods, which I did not dry out or use. You need to try it on several flowers. And use pollen from a older flower, almost done, not necessarily dried up, and use a younger recently opened flower to accept the pollen." Older man, younger lady". Should work. I dont know how long pollen lasts. I would use a fresh made batch. Good luck!
@@sooneatyOrchids thank you. I was used to hybridizing lilies. That pollen lasts about a year sometimes. This will make things a bit more complicated, but I’d rather it work. Otherwise why do it at all?
Did it take? I just found a seed pot on my one and only beloved African violet. Idk what to do next. Any advice from anyone in the community? Right now the seed pot is round and green in color. Still attached to the flower stem though all petals from thar flower fell off. At what stage should I remove the seed pot? Thank u in advance! Please make more A.V videos they are so informative 🙃
@@sooneatyOrchids thanks for your reply. I’m currently keeping an eye on it. I’ve just joined an AV group on FB and I’m getting lots of interesting information. I’ll follow up here once the seed pot turns brown and it’s ready for harvesting. Wish me good luck 😀

Oh WOW this is SO interesting!! I can't wait til my African Violets rebloom so that I can try this!!❤️🥰🙏🏼🙏🏼

+Linda Guthrie You are most welcome. If you cut away some leaves at the bottom, you will get lots of babies.

Mine did not ripen. although they grew. I believe it takes many weeks to mature the seends. I would be interested to know what happens with yours.

Que bonitas como le haces?
What's the price of African Violet ?
Ok, what do you do after you pollinate the violet? What is the next step?
+robin pross You wait for the seed pod and harvest the seeds.
Still anxious to see the results yay!
I did not get seeds Mary. The pods died without ripening. Don't know why that happened.
Türkçe çeviri olsa iyi olurdu cok tatlı menekseler👏🌹🐞🙏❤
so what hapened after that?
it actually did not dry to seed stage, the pods remained green for a long time, and then fell away. i did not preserve it.
