As someone who works in the dairy industry in the US I was aware of the basic dot points of this, but turns out the story behind this was far more interesting than I first believed. Great report Matt!
I remember this stuff well. It was given to Native Americans, so my grandparents and cousins always had it. Can confirm it makes the best grilled cheese. I think about it everyday. It haunts me.
I'm a social worker in the US and I had to study welfare history/policy for my degree, and I still have never heard of this! What a crazy thing. Great report Matt!
I'm from the UK and had no idea this was a thing?! In our house we call it 'plackey' cheese although I wasn't sure why until I started writing this sentence and just clocked it's short for 'plastic'... my mind is blown. Anyway, great episode & loving the web series!
Reagan: I'll cut food stamps. Also Reagan: Have a block a cheese. *Face palm* Honestly, why didn't they donate the cheese sooner? It seems so stupid. But at least we got this fun video, wish I'd seen it live. Also, I've never heard of government cheese before.
I don't know why people take to make jokes about a government cheese the government did buy the milk for the cheese and the butter it is 100% true it would for the needy in the homeless people to have people for low income families I was a low-income families back in the 70s and 80 that's when the inflation started hitting really bad just like right now the inflation geting real bad now and people hitting it rough the government cheese need to come back and the butter
