Personally, all the artists have won. A very difficult way to compete. I truly enjoy this series and hope to see all. Four hours is not enough for me to do a portrait, so I can imagine the difficulty. Well done everyone.
It was great to see Ewan there. I've heard from competitors of other types of contests that losing wasn't so bad, and they are busier than ever because more people know about them now!
I was heartbroken when he lost last season. I’m so happy that he won this time! His art is amazing and he really deserves it. (All of the other artists were great too but Alan is just… WOW!)
The older lady said in another episode they need to pick different kinds of paintings this year. I would consider harsh ugliness as a negative. It reflects on a painters and fans state of mind. We can get so overwhelmed with a thing that we become immune to the wrongness of it.
That’s the major problem with the judges, they seemingly have no criteria for judging other than their personal taste. All three judges (especially the younger blond woman) choose the winning artwork based on their own taste which should not be even taken into account when judging work.
@@sunck2262 yes, I agree with you. Also , I think they judge the process not just the final painting. I would not have judged that painting to win for sure. There are many we did not see, and I find them talking to the artists while they are against the clock is teeth grinding. The judges should be kept for the end and be more transparent.
What a lovely program. I enjoyed the sitters, the ARTISTS and their process of creation during a stressful 4-hour portrait session with television cameras, viewing public and critics hovering over them. What a success to just get on this great 👍 show. Thank you.
I teach Portraiture for adults with learning challenges, and we watch PAOY all the time, as a major source of inspiration. He didn't capture the man's spirit at all (the one they chose as the winner). There were 4 really great & inspiring women painters here --- Teri, Helen, Lauren and Cathy . gave me alot of joy to see their passion and fresh approaches 💞
Yes I agree, they chose the artist that seemed almost traditional. The others made thier client happy and expressed themselves through the paint making it truly art.
I wish they had spent time in conversing with the black man. I thought his work really shined and deserved some recognition, but it's not surprising they didn't.
Noooo!!! The modern girl with the clouds and face combined is so much more refined and creative than 2 of them on the short list. I know art is subjective but I thought the judges kinda messed up.
I SO agree with you. They picked a chaotic messy thing and passed up a beautiful, modern portrait that looked like the sitter. Those color splash paintings have been done since the 60's (maybe before), not modern at all.
@@ShimmeringWind I know nothing about drawing or art but I can appreciate the talent. Which I will gladly admit im arrogant on the other dudes technique. Was she really that creative or just familiar with the face in clouds Photoshop tutorial? Since they said she has a degree in animation and does most of her work on computers I think it's probably the latter. The judges didn't mess up, the sitter didn't select her portrait either.
Love watching the art appear. I would consider harsh ugliness as a negative. It reflects on a painters and fans state of mind. We can get so overwhelmed with a thing that we become immune to the wrongness of it. Order vs disorder. We do need both. But which do we want to champion?
I am baffled how people come up with "Its only his 2nd Oilpainting" and deliver like that!! thats amazing! and this fellow works in a call Center instead of living of his art. .. Thats Crazy. There is nothing amature about this Amatures! Amazing!
I'm not overly artsy-fartsy but I can understand why many people including myself don't consider photographically accurate renderings to be true art. When I watch this I can see each artist's interpretation go into their work and that is what makes it art. You aren't just looking at a picture - you are seeing the mind of the artist and that is what makes it interesting and enjoyable to look at.
I find that pretentious. I get that different renditions and styles certainly can be more your preference, but to ascribe this visual satisfaction to some higher meaning is ridiculous. You aren't seeing the inner workings of an artist's mind. You're simply seeing a particular design choice or style. That's all. You have no insight to his thought process, no insight to what influenced his art style, nor insight as to why he chose to apply that art style. I find hyperrealism appealing because it speaks to an amazing understanding of the world, of scale, relativity, light and motor control to then transfer that to a medium. That speaks more to the mind of the artist than some arbitrary presumption of design choices being made due to some metaphysical concept or psychoanalysis of the model.
Notice how the judges struggle to articulate their logical processes in selection based on such reasonings in this, the and previous episode without sounding silly and stuttering. Reducing the image because to juxtapose against the model's large personality? What?
@@nugget7865 this is a complete dismissal of expressionism. That seems very pretentious. Our interpretations are influenced by past works, by reality, and a few other things probably, and so are the artist's expressions. We can take in these additions added by artists, or subtractions, and interpret why they were added/subtracted, because we share a human dictionary. Also, If you think psychological states don't influence artist approach and output you are totally misled.
@@nugget7865 here's another example of how you fail with your interpretation of expressive or abstract art. Let's say we have an artist who is differently abled. Is their experience and understanding of world somehow less because they express themselves via abstraction? I don't think so. Realism is absolutely cool but dismissing abstract or expressive art is just lame
@@noah5291 You realize I'm not criticizing the artist, but the viewer, yes? Abstract art can be meaningful for the artist, but to the ignorant viewer, nothing at all but pretentious assumptions. If you have to accompany that piece of art with a biography and a song and dance, then you're not evaluating the art on it's own merit. So, what, comparing two pieces of similar attempts at hyperrealism, with one being obviously superior, but should lose because the other is painted by a disabled painter, and thus his piece "speaks to his expression of defiance against cards dealt to him, fighting against the world and overcoming his tribulations"? What if the artist just liked to paint? Abstract art is cool, and anything can mean whatever to anyone, but if you're going to judge, your arbitrary assumptions should not play a part. It's ridiculous.
The judges need to look past art history and think more forward. They constantly reference artists from the impressionists era or older and I feel like it only makes the artists hold back.

I really like Allen's bold color and expressive paint handling but the the other two paintings were so so bad,, I can't understand why you wouldn't put a background in. Figures always exist in a space. I can't quite understand what the judges are thinking
I love this series. I especially like the portraits. But I'm not sure about using modern technology to make a portrait. Taking photos and painting off of them when there is a live model just seems like cheating in a way.
I don't think so. 4 hours are very tough. And the changing light doesn't make it easier. (I'm glad they changed location in later series with consistent artificial light only) So a reference for the lights seems to be defendable. But I agree, if you have a real life model, you should take it as your primary source.
If you have two paintings of equal artistic and technical merit and one is of an attractive subject and the other is of an unattractive subject, most people will think the attractive subject is a better painting.
