I always pick Bulbasaur. His powders make pokemon pretty easy to catch. Also his draining moves allow you to blitz the caves, draining those geodudes/gravelers that Hitchhikers usually have dead. Of course, in the newer versions Charmander can learn a steel move before the first gym so picking him first is less of a pain.
I always chose Squirtle growing up. I guess that's what fueled my love of water type pokemon. Anywho, this is beautifully done, and the music was so nostalgic. I totally 'sang' along to them.
