  • So as a family we have decided to take the plunge and buy a boat. What seems at first to be the pastime of the wealthy, looks like it can actually be an affordable family hobby and weekend get away. Follow my journey from never having owned a boat through our first full summer of usage.
This is a brand new channel. I have another on camping / @novicewildcamper so please subscribe and hit that notification bell for when my next video releases. Hopefully a successful first launch!

Close. Maybe I paid over the odds 😬 I've been in sales all my life and the way I see it is somethings worth what youre willing to pay for it 🤷🏼‍♂️

@@boating-beginner as you said in your video, it's already lost all it's depreciation.
My current boat is quite interesting because I bought it before covid at a decent price, then sold it during covid when prices were high and then ended up buying it back this year for half price when the guy was desperate to sell.
So it now owes me about 1/3rd of what it's probably worth 🤯

I shall follow your progress with interest. I was a newbie like you last year although I went in big with a 10m boat with all the bells and whistles. I’ve unexpectedly retired this year so we are selling and downsizing but hopefully won’t be without a boat for too long. Best of luck to you

Thanks Geoff. Our plan is to start with this one and see how we get on with it. Ideal would be around a 26 footer with 4 berth cabin cruiser. Next boat 👌👍

Great, thanks for the video, I found it very helpful. Have been following sailing/boating channels for some time but have not been in the right place to take the plunge! 5-6k for a cuddy cabin boat seems very good value, and with some care and restoration I expect you could gain on that if and when you decide to trade up. As you say, the most important thing is to start boating and get out on the water and gain experience. Looking to do the RYA powerboat course soon and then maybe next year commit to something but I would also like some experience going out in boats with people who know what they are doing. Mooring costs, insurance, winter storage cost etc sound very reasonable. One question - what made you decide to use ebay as opposed to a broker? Also, it seems like the condition of the engine is the most important thing, but with an outboard motor I guess that is less important as it can be more easily fixed and/or replaced.

Hi. Thanks for watching. I just looked around and the nearest ti what I wanted was on ebay. Also using a dealer just means paying their commission and to be honest on an old boat like this they're less likely to be found at a reputable dealer so I wanted one that had been cared for by the owner. I've only got a month of mooring left so will hopefully be getting it out a few more times then when I put it into storage I am looking to give it a full polish, redo the stripes and signage and then try the day cover as it came with one but he'd never used it. You're welcome to come out for a ride if you're local before it goes away if you like and I can go over what I've learnt in mooring and getting to and from re fueling etc that you don't always think about. I am already considering my next purchase as although I love this my aim was to get a proper cabin cruiser so may change next year but we will see. 👍

In regard to the engine, yes outboards are a lot cheaper and easier to look after and replace if theres a problem but I will go over the winterisation of it when I take it out as well and do a video on everything I do with it.

Thanks for the helpful advice and your kind offer. I'm Bristol way but ideally looking to move towards the coast in the next few years (if I can get my career to wind down!), or at least have a base there as I find the coast from Dartmouth to Exmouth more appealing than the Bristol Channel (mostly mud). Have spent many happy holidays with the kids down by the Dart, Exmouth very nice also.

@stuart6894 sorry Stuart, for some reason my notifications aren't popping up. Yes it's a great coastline down here and so many places to go and explore. I'm already considering a larger boat maybe in a year or so as I can then go further and stay over too. 👍
