It's amazing this was just five years after The Beatles made their premiere on The Ed Sullivan Show -- in that short time this and dozens of other songs they had written had already become standards. While I was anxious about watching this (fearing the worst), Joel Grey performs this absolutely perfectly. I'd imagine this is the sort of performance young Paul envisioned taking place on a West End stage when he dreamed of writing musicals in his pre-Beatles days.
Joel always gives a great performance! I love the set and costumes! I like how he doesn't just sing this song, but plays a character while doing so. I hope you will also post his great George M medley on here someday which is a real show-stopper! Thank you for this video!
It is never a cakewalk to cover a Beatles Song. And, this number was quite noteable on the greatest album of all time - "Sargeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band". Joel Grey nails this, and, he actually makes the song 'his'. What a treasure we have in Joel Grey.
A true monster of the scene and a living legend of musical theater. He is one of the few actors who have won Tony and Oscar for the same role (unforgettable as Emcee in Cabaret)...
My introduction to Joel Grey was actually through a movie character that fooled my 80's childhood! A gem from 1985 titled... REMO WILLIAMS: THE ADVENTURE BEGINS. You're probably thinking: THAT ACTION FILM WITH FRED WARD? WHERE WAS JOEL GREY? I DON'T REMEMBER SEEING HIM IN THAT! Actually, he played a role that wouldn't happen in today's entertainment world. Remember Chiun, the Korean martial arts teacher? Yup, that's Joel Grey in yellowface. Food for thought...😂❤

Meanwhile that same year, in Cielo Dr. California, Manson’s followers write in blood on one of Polanski’s walls “Helter Skelter” after their horrific crime. And Joe Cocker covers “With A Little Help from my Friends” in Woodstock Festival as a celebration of peace, love and understanding among people of all colors, age or religion. The Beatles: the greatest band over the world.
What's this "When I get older losing my hair" jazz? I turned 64 last year and I still have all my hair and nary a grey. Maybe it's because I still listen to rock and roll everyday. "Doing the garden, digging the weeds, who could ask for more?" How about me? Digging weeds sucks.
Delightful 1967 song which reflects the versatility of the writers influence and range of thought. Quite interesting cover of the song. I love it. Ed Sullivan was an incredible show and I’m reminded of this almost daily with the release of these performances.

This is surprisingly really good, I love how he's basically doing this in character as the Cabaret emcee!
Yeah, that song's right in his wheelhouse. Great that this performance was captured.
Joel is 91 now! In a few years, "When I'm Ninety-Four" will work.

Future Academy Award winner. 🙂
Delightful Performance! 🩷
Happy Wednesday... thank you for sharing! 💖
I saw him in person at Westbury Music Fair in a revival of Cabaret, a long, long time ago. 😊

I was 14 years old. Great memories. Where’s Ed Sullivan when you need him?
Nice performance! Love the set design, costumes as well as the wonderful dancers!!

He was born for the theater, a really great performer!
A great song-and- dance man!

great song love this Evey much
People on the Ed Sullivan sang a song, live before an audience. Today, there's a lot of dubbing and voice alterations with electronic devices.
JR's so-called 'guardian angel' from the final episode of Dallas.
The Great Gatsby (1974) vibes here..
For all you Gen X's and younger boomers, Joel Grey is Jennifer Grey's (Dirty Dancing, Red Dawn) father!
What about Gen Z & millennials hahahaha it’s alright I’ve given up on them
@@Warp75 Me, too! 😆

Who is Jennifer Grey? LOL 😆
Where is the mic?
Not a bad version
The father of Jennifer Grey.
Looks like Elton john
He didn;t sing the best part "Grand Children on my knee, Vera, Chuck, and Dave"
I thought there was something missing.

Curious choice to recast a silly 1967 song into a sillier 1930s song.
It was a silly 1930s song even when Paul first wrote it.

@@jody8526937❤Well said
Honey Pie from the white album also had 1930s vibes… the boys from Liverpool switched it up
So unnecessary.
This is blasphemy, Ed Sullivan made a mistake with this sketch.
He didn't even sing the lyrics correctly.....😮
