It's been 18yrs since I've taken the coastal route from Sydney to Melbourne. It's great to take the scenic and slower route from time to time. It's amazing how many POIs you find.

I enjoyed watching that thank you. Very well done and lots of variation. You were in my neck of the woods. I grew up in Yinnar and recently moved from the Bairnsdale area. It’s still blowing a gale here; I’m well and truely over it, as is my garden.

I loved this one. Spent time at Loy Yang on a Carbon Capture pilot plant some years ago, and might have to head down there again in the next year. All I ever saw of the area was hotel-power station- hotel, rinse and repeat.... so at least I got to see a bit of the surrounds in this video. Also, Eden is a favourite of my family. Been there many times for spearfishing competitions, such a beautiful area. .
The power plant is such a huge operation! Quite impressive when you think about it. You'll have to see if you can get some free time next time you're there to have a look around. I would always do that when travelling for business, even if it meant me staying the weekend. Worth it. 😊

Me laughing when yr complaining about the long drive coz hey, I did offer a stopover at Bairnsdale! Glad to see u donate at Yinnar. Kevin does an amazing job in his free time maintaining the place, it’s always spotless. He had to fight hard to get it put in there in the first place. It’s pretty much always windy there, without the stuff that’s been blowing thru lately. It is donation, the free Yinnar camp is about 6ks from town and it’s pretty ordinary. I found a permanent facedown in the grass when I looked at it so went back to the town one! Cann river is free, 48 hours. I last stayed in the floods last year, decided to move on after only a night coz the river was way up and rising. They ended up evacuating and closing it after I’d left, another traveler told me at Orbost. Otherwise it’s a fairly sheltered spot, but the site you camped it has always been closed because it gets so wet when I’ve gone thru there. And it normally fills up just after lunch, the roads seem pretty quiet presently.
Would have loved to have had more time and stopped at Bairnsdale, but need to get back to Sydney over the next week. I was thinking about the flood potential at Cann River. There were only a few spots left by evening, so yeah, seems pretty popular. The Yinnar spot was very well maintained. Even better than most caravan parks 😁
Fabulous content, Jason! Your new camera captures everything brilliantly. We passed through Cann River on one of our trips earlier this year, but instead of taking the coastal road home, we opted for the B23. I always regret that once we decide to head home, we tend to take the easiest route and end up missing out on some special spots. The main reason we avoided the coast was the lack of free camps, which is such a shame. Do you have any suggestions? Your video has definitely inspired me to consider taking the coastal route back down from Sydney again.
Thanks Julia. There's quite a lot of places to stay for free, but they may not have any facilities. Most are just clearings in the state forests, so as long as you're self contained it's ok. You might also have to drive 10 or 15km from main towns to find a spot too.
The wind has been horrendous the weather has been warming up yay great places you’ve been to enjoy watching the different locations part of being able to go where ever you want to that’s van life

Just found this…the classic case of ‘saw your light on, thought I’d drop in’ because I passed you on the highway, and you’re in my neck of the woods, so to speak...your take on yinnar’s a bit rough. It’s a lovely little town, and the fact that it is only ten minutes off the highway means it’s peaceful, not a lot of through traffic, mainly local people. The art gallery there also houses the local artists studio spaces, and is very worth a visit.
It was certainly nice and quiet there and as I said, a great camp ground. I would have liked to have a look at the art gallery. The various art works around the town were interesting. Maybe next time when I have more time 😊

@@MakingStuffGoingPlaces A bloke here at Akoonah Park had a widowmaker just miss his van. I would have crushed the roof in if it had hit, and it was very close. My bus was rocking like a house boat. I decided to stay off the road while it was happening.
@interestedinstuff1499 Jeez...sounds lucky that it missed his van. Always wise to stay off the road in those conditions, particularly if you're not really in any great rush to get somewhere.

Loved this video, what is the make and model of your bike? in another video you said something about tiny kangaroos being potaroos they are actually paddy melons. Max and occy have them on their 5acre property in northern NSW. You should pay him a visit as he loves camper van gurus like yourself. 😅
Ah yes, I couldn't think of the name of them while I was driving. Not something I've seen for quite some time. No Pademelons in Victoria that I've seen, but funnily enough, Tasmania is crawling with them 😂 My bikes a Specialized Stumpjumper 29er. It's a 2016 model so they changed a bit since then but still a really good do everything bike.
thanks for that information about your bike. Your strava stats said 19km ride. How many laps is that of the trail? In your video you made it look like a roller coaster ride on your bike but a bit dangerous as well the way your brakes were squealing. How would you rate yourself compared to other people riding those type of trails? Average or above average? Also are your brake discs squealing because you don’t clean them very often thus contaminating your brake pads? Isopropyl alcohol on a bit of paper towel works a treat. 😅
So that was one run down Rodgy Bull, back up then one run down Straight Six which runs back to the carpark. I would say the trails increase in speed in that order. Everything is rollable, but it's a brake workout. When I used to be able to look at the leader boards on Strava, I would sit around the top 10% on trails like that. Once you start getting big jumps or rocky features, I get left behind. Climb wise, I usually end up about middle of the pack. I did sand and clean my pads a few months ago. Helped for a while but back to squealing again. Good reminder though....I need to do it again. Maybe I'll try just cleaning them without sanding first. Need new rotors too. The back one is my main problem and it's really old!
@@MakingStuffGoingPlaces yeah isopropyl alcohol in a little squirt bottle and some clean paper towel is the best for cleaning rotors and pads. My personal hate is squealing rotors while braking. It’s like cars doing burnouts in the car park while you’re trying to sleep in your van. 😛
@realist451 😂 I really hate it too. So off putting. Every bike I've ever had, with every different brake combination has done it. I can clean them up or replace them, no noise for months then as soon as I hit some of these steep trails, they start howling within minutes. Since I've ordered new rotors and pads, I decided to hit the old rotors with some sand paper. Stopped the noise but also lost braking power (similar to fitting new pads) but I'll see if that helps for a while. Maybe need to de-glaze every now and then...🙄
Quarantine Bay looked really nice , so did that free campground on the river , are there many free camps around? If so , why don’t you stay in them.? Wouldn’t it be more relaxing, and you wouldn’t have to leave before the sun comes up. Great vid
I do stay in them at every opportunity, but many are along forestry roads or if not, right in freeways. They're not always convenient enough, but yes, I do head into free camps for a "rest"😁
I buy lettuce regularly for myself. I also buy bread to make toast then melt cheese on them......buy a 4.40 pkt bacon and a bottle or two of caesar dressing about 15 dollars all up. Cook the bacon well and crispy and cut this and the cheese toasts into very small squares and use micro to really dry the cheese bits. Cook the outer layers of the lettuce and other parts (core) in the melted bacon fat appalachian style and use all the fat up. This is delicious to eat with a slice or two of the uncut cheesies while storing away the croutons and cut up bacon in fridge. When you eat you use a scissors to cut a portion of the lettuce, add a spoonful of croutons and bacon and caesar dressing to taste. I get 6 to 8 salad meals from the 15 dollars spent and take two weeks to eat these, Scrumptious, cheap and good for keeping the bowels regular. In between I eat poached eggs and supermarket brand baked beans on toast using the same loaf. All up around 25 dollars for a fortnight. In season cheap fruits add to the good fibre. Prices are getting more expensive so even at 30 dollars for 2 weeks it is still relatively cheap. The fat fibre protein carb ratio is very healthy.....love watching your vids.
That's impressive! 😊 You're a good example of how to live cheaply if you want to. You've got me thinking now 😂 I usually get 5 meals from the stir fry meals I make. It was about $10 for a chicken breast and veggies, then say maybe $2 for the various bits of sauce I add. Rice is $1.80 per kg which lasts about 6 weeks or so, so 30 cents worth for 5 days. Around $13 for 5 meals isn't too bad either. My problem is all the other stuff that adds up. But I like ice cream 😂
Just catching up on your videos. Not sure why but had a feeling you'd be heading back to Sydney along the coast. I was keeping an eye out for you, though we didnt cross paths, but couldn't have missed by much. We were travelling in the opposite direction and hit the wind at Lakes Entrance on the Thursday and had it until we left Torquay the following Monday. But what I wanted to ask, and maybe it's been asked previously, you're riding a Specialized arent you? Which model do you have? I do like the brand and, and have a single speed, no suspension 29" Crave which I love to ride, and the look of, but wanting to pickup a dual suspension 29er. Loving your videos. Easy to watch and entertaining, and well shot and edited.
Thanks Nathan! My bikes a Specialized Stumpjumper 29er. It's an old 2016 model and I keep replacing parts to keep it going. Done just under 25,000km now so doing really well. If I replace it, it would most likely be with another Stumpjumper. I think it's a great do everything bike.
Hi Jason, just wanted to say that I very much enjoy watching your videos and seeing the amazing places you go to. Even before I happened across your channel I had been watching various van life videos and van reviews on YT and took a liking to them. I guess I got it in my head that it's something I'd love to do one day. Unfortunately my current life circumstances are incompatible with that desire. One day! I haven't yet watched all the videos on your channel but I'm slowly working my way through them. Of the ones I have seen, I haven't seen you working on videos on your computer in your van and I was wondering if you do that or if your van is not set up to be able to. I know you have wifi in your van but I haven't seen a desk space or area where you can work on your computer. I assume it's a laptop? I'd be interested to ask you several other questions about the practicalities of van life as you do it, the impracticalities, what contingencies you plan for and how you do that and whether you have one or more fallback strategies depending what situations or problems you might encounter, like mechanical issues, health issues, storage options/solutions for things that it may not be practicable to always have in the van with you. Also, many YT content creators add a list of items they use in the making of their videos and in their van life travels and I was wondering if you have ever done that in any of yours. Hi Peter, nice to have you following along 😊 I don't have any dedicated workspace, just sit on my lounge which can get a little uncomfortable after several hours of video editing. Just use a laptop, nothing special. I only have very limited equipment I use to make the videos, hence not really worth discussing it. Just a GoPro and the new camera I've discussed in recent videos. I do have stuff stored at my mother's house, such as tools and things. If ever I had a major problem and couldn't live in the van, I guess I would need to crash at her place until I found an alternative. I don't worry too much about "what if's" as that just serves to hold you back. If something does pop up, I'll deal with it as it comes 😁
Wild winds hey. Hard driving in them. Supposed to be coming back again Monday, be ready! Lovely along the coast. Eden deserves its name. Have missed Genoa Falls and Aslings beach on my travels, tucking them away for next time. Donation camp at Genoa, though you've probs passed now. Brou Lake. Dirt road in, very tall gums (no good if windy) beautiful beach/lake. Put on your list for next time. Plenty of State Forests too.
Been cycling to work in that crazy weather, not fun. Thought you'd be travelling slower. Lots of country town gems out there, it's a pity I don't have more time. Have cycle toured all over Oz, but current job doesn't give me a lot of time off flexibility. So bought a motorbike to explore and have been on some good trips.

I'm with you, Phil! I really like to re-watch many of the videos, but for me, I prefer to just look at the scenery rather than me 😂 It's a tough balance trying to get enough of the natural beauty plus the vanlife details in there to appeal to a large enough audience. I find that people tend to start skipping the nature sections as they run longer. Interestingly, and also disappointingly, my last video is performing worse than any I have done in a very long time....it's a common theme that when I find somewhere I absolutely lov and focus more on nature, very few people watch it and I end up losing subscribers. On the other side...I do cram a lot into my days and it actually gets difficult to capture it all and put into a video. Hence why I'm still doing 2 videos per week. I'm not sure what the answer is but will keep trying slightly different ways of doings things.
It's kind of funny how you wait for certain things to happen in a particular creator's video. With yours, it's the talking to the camera pieces while randomly stabbing at your food with a spoon! I'm going to be disappointed if it's not included.
Is that gravity eden mtb park , I went past there a few months ago coming from omeo heading to kiama ,you should do Narooma mtb Park if you're heading north.
Yeah, it's not perfect, mainly when it's windy and I have the wind socks on the GoPro. Unfortunately too much gear takes the spontaneity out of it, but yes, point noted!😊

I almost went to the Cabbage Tree Walk, but then realised it was 4km of fire trail so turned back. I need more time in the area!

@@MakingStuffGoingPlaces A bloke here at Akoonah Park had a widowmaker just miss his van. I would have crushed the roof in if it had hit, and it was very close. My bus was rocking like a house boat. I decided to stay off the road while it was happening.
@interestedinstuff1499 Jeez...sounds lucky that it missed his van. Always wise to stay off the road in those conditions, particularly if you're not really in any great rush to get somewhere.

The Genoa campground is free and pretty good. We didn't stay overnight but did enjoy hanging out during the heat of the day.
That's good to know. One day I'll drop in to Mallacoota. Genoa might be the closest free camp.

Loved this video, what is the make and model of your bike? in another video you said something about tiny kangaroos being potaroos they are actually paddy melons. Max and occy have them on their 5acre property in northern NSW. You should pay him a visit as he loves camper van gurus like yourself. 😅
Ah yes, I couldn't think of the name of them while I was driving. Not something I've seen for quite some time. No Pademelons in Victoria that I've seen, but funnily enough, Tasmania is crawling with them 😂
My bikes a Specialized Stumpjumper 29er. It's a 2016 model so they changed a bit since then but still a really good do everything bike.
thanks for that information about your bike. Your strava stats said 19km ride. How many laps is that of the trail? In your video you made it look like a roller coaster ride on your bike but a bit dangerous as well the way your brakes were squealing. How would you rate yourself compared to other people riding those type of trails? Average or above average? Also are your brake discs squealing because you don’t clean them very often thus contaminating your brake pads? Isopropyl alcohol on a bit of paper towel works a treat. 😅
So that was one run down Rodgy Bull, back up then one run down Straight Six which runs back to the carpark. I would say the trails increase in speed in that order. Everything is rollable, but it's a brake workout.
When I used to be able to look at the leader boards on Strava, I would sit around the top 10% on trails like that. Once you start getting big jumps or rocky features, I get left behind. Climb wise, I usually end up about middle of the pack.
I did sand and clean my pads a few months ago. Helped for a while but back to squealing again. Good reminder though....I need to do it again. Maybe I'll try just cleaning them without sanding first. Need new rotors too. The back one is my main problem and it's really old!
@@MakingStuffGoingPlaces yeah isopropyl alcohol in a little squirt bottle and some clean paper towel is the best for cleaning rotors and pads. My personal hate is squealing rotors while braking. It’s like cars doing burnouts in the car park while you’re trying to sleep in your van. 😛
@realist451 😂 I really hate it too. So off putting. Every bike I've ever had, with every different brake combination has done it. I can clean them up or replace them, no noise for months then as soon as I hit some of these steep trails, they start howling within minutes.
Since I've ordered new rotors and pads, I decided to hit the old rotors with some sand paper. Stopped the noise but also lost braking power (similar to fitting new pads) but I'll see if that helps for a while. Maybe need to de-glaze every now and then...🙄
Quarantine Bay looked really nice , so did that free campground on the river , are there many free camps around? If so , why don’t you stay in them.? Wouldn’t it be more relaxing, and you wouldn’t have to leave before the sun comes up.

I do stay in them at every opportunity, but many are along forestry roads or if not, right in freeways. They're not always convenient enough, but yes, I do head into free camps for a "rest"😁
I buy lettuce regularly for myself. I also buy bread to make toast then melt cheese on them......buy a 4.40 pkt bacon and a bottle or two of caesar dressing about 15 dollars all up. Cook the bacon well and crispy and cut this and the cheese toasts into very small squares and use micro to really dry the cheese bits. Cook the outer layers of the lettuce and other parts (core) in the melted bacon fat appalachian style and use all the fat up. This is delicious to eat with a slice or two of the uncut cheesies while storing away the croutons and cut up bacon in fridge. When you eat you use a scissors to cut a portion of the lettuce, add a spoonful of croutons and bacon and caesar dressing to taste. I get 6 to 8 salad meals from the 15 dollars spent and take two weeks to eat these, Scrumptious, cheap and good for keeping the bowels regular. In between I eat poached eggs and supermarket brand baked beans on toast using the same loaf. All up around 25 dollars for a fortnight. In season cheap fruits add to the good fibre. Prices are getting more expensive so even at 30 dollars for 2 weeks it is still relatively cheap. The fat fibre protein carb ratio is very healthy.....love watching your vids.

I usually get 5 meals from the stir fry meals I make. It was about $10 for a chicken breast and veggies, then say maybe $2 for the various bits of sauce I add. Rice is $1.80 per kg which lasts about 6 weeks or so, so 30 cents worth for 5 days. Around $13 for 5 meals isn't too bad either.
My problem is all the other stuff that adds up. But I like ice cream 😂
Just catching up on your videos. Not sure why but had a feeling you'd be heading back to Sydney along the coast. I was keeping an eye out for you, though we didnt cross paths, but couldn't have missed by much. We were travelling in the opposite direction and hit the wind at Lakes Entrance on the Thursday and had it until we left Torquay the following Monday.
But what I wanted to ask, and maybe it's been asked previously, you're riding a Specialized arent you? Which model do you have? I do like the brand and, and have a single speed, no suspension 29" Crave which I love to ride, and the look of, but wanting to pickup a dual suspension 29er.

My bikes a Specialized Stumpjumper 29er. It's an old 2016 model and I keep replacing parts to keep it going. Done just under 25,000km now so doing really well. If I replace it, it would most likely be with another Stumpjumper. I think it's a great do everything bike.
Hi Jason, just wanted to say that I very much enjoy watching your videos and seeing the amazing places you go to. Even before I happened across your channel I had been watching various van life videos and van reviews on YT and took a liking to them.
I guess I got it in my head that it's something I'd love to do one day. Unfortunately my current life circumstances are incompatible with that desire. One day!
I haven't yet watched all the videos on your channel but I'm slowly working my way through them. Of the ones I have seen, I haven't seen you working on videos on your computer in your van and I was wondering if you do that or if your van is not set up to be able to.
I know you have wifi in your van but I haven't seen a desk space or area where you can work on your computer. I assume it's a laptop?
I'd be interested to ask you several other questions about the practicalities of van life as you do it, the impracticalities, what contingencies you plan for and how you do that and whether you have one or more fallback strategies depending what situations or problems you might encounter, like mechanical issues, health issues, storage options/solutions for things that it may not be practicable to always have in the van with you.
Also, many YT content creators add a list of items they use in the making of their videos and in their van life travels and I was wondering if you have ever done that in any of yours.

I don't have any dedicated workspace, just sit on my lounge which can get a little uncomfortable after several hours of video editing. Just use a laptop, nothing special.
I only have very limited equipment I use to make the videos, hence not really worth discussing it. Just a GoPro and the new camera I've discussed in recent videos.
I do have stuff stored at my mother's house, such as tools and things. If ever I had a major problem and couldn't live in the van, I guess I would need to crash at her place until I found an alternative.
I don't worry too much about "what if's" as that just serves to hold you back. If something does pop up, I'll deal with it as it comes 😁

Wild winds hey. Hard driving in them. Supposed to be coming back again Monday, be ready! Lovely along the coast. Eden deserves its name. Have missed Genoa Falls and Aslings beach on my travels, tucking them away for next time. Donation camp at Genoa, though you've probs passed now. Just out of Narooma free camp and one South of Batemans, both on highway though. Yes, tee shirt and shorts weather already! New camera footage is 👍

Been cycling to work in that crazy weather, not fun. Thought you'd be travelling slower. Lots of country town gems out there, it's a pity I don't have more time. Have cycle toured all over Oz, but current job doesn't give me a lot of time off flexibility. So bought a motorbike to explore and have been on some good trips.
Riding anything in this wind is a challenge!

I'm with you, Phil! I really like to re-watch many of the videos, but for me, I prefer to just look at the scenery rather than me 😂
It's a tough balance trying to get enough of the natural beauty plus the vanlife details in there to appeal to a large enough audience. I find that people tend to start skipping the nature sections as they run longer. Interestingly, and also disappointingly, my last video is performing worse than any I have done in a very long time....it's a common theme that when I find somewhere I absolutely lov and focus more on nature, very few people watch it and I end up losing subscribers.
On the other side...I do cram a lot into my days and it actually gets difficult to capture it all and put into a video. Hence why I'm still doing 2 videos per week.
I'm not sure what the answer is but will keep trying slightly different ways of doings things.
It's kind of funny how you wait for certain things to happen in a particular creator's video.
With yours, it's the talking to the camera pieces while randomly stabbing at your food with a spoon!
I'm going to be disappointed if it's not included.

I know you just invested in a new camera, maybe next will be a microphone. The audio is very muffled in a lot of your videos especially when outside.
Yeah, it's not perfect, mainly when it's windy and I have the wind socks on the GoPro. Unfortunately too much gear takes the spontaneity out of it, but yes, point noted!😊
Lucky they're burning dinosaurs because the wind turbines will be locked down.
