I loved this game, I named my first pet rabbit Hip Hop after being inspired by this game! Thanks for the blast from the past, you have such a soothing voice!
Everything about this game is so random and bizarre- The fact there is no racing, it was a late release (didn't know that!) and that it exists at all, really, given the age of the cartoon. I agree that they should have put a racing stage at the end of each level! That would have fleshed it out better probably and made the game make a little more sense! I still like it alright though. Anyway, great video and congrats on 50K!
@@Cannotbetamed1 FWIW, Wacky Races actually was on Saturday morning cartoons at the time. I forget the name exactly - I'll look it up in a second - But Hannah Barbara had a block of programming where they would run Wacky Races shorts. There was a small resurgence of old cartoons and kids shows around this time, many of which got games on the NES. Felix the Cat, The Ghostbusters (the one with a gorilla, not the one based on the movies that passive aggressively added "Real" to the title even if the movies came out 25 years later), Flintstones and Jetsons etc.. Okay - found it. The Block of Programming was called "Wake, Rattle and Roll". It was syndicated in 1990, and then went to the Disney Channel from '91 to '94 and renamed "Jump, Rattle and Roll" The Wacky Races segment was called "Fender Bender 500", and while Dick and Muttley remained the focus, it was updated to include other Hanna Barbara regulars as its racers, like Yogi Bear and Booboo or Huckleberry Hound and Snagglepuss in place of the original 60s and 70s cast. This game was released at about the time that it made the jump to the Disney Channel. If I had to guess, they had a game already in production and modified and reskinned it in an attempt to get a little bit more attention (though it's odd that they didn't update the racers or name). Just happened upon your videos about three weeks ago and I've really liked them. I've also enjoyed learning about the real tea party. Canada's Tea Party is much more fun than the one I've experienced here in Kansas. Thanks for all the great game videos!
I remember growing up a fan of the cartoon, and renting this game sometime in the early 90s, only to be "furious" that it wasn't a racing game but a platformer (children get pissed off at the dumbest things.) I distinctly remember pitching such a fit that my mom took the game back early and rented a second one. I don't think I ever played more of it, but I'm glad to see it was a decent platformer in the least. I'd love to see a Wacky Races movie sometime in the future. You're doing a great job at digging up games that I totally missed. I consider myself quite knowledgeable of the NES, but you have proven me wrong several times 🙂 keep doing that!
Something tells me there's a story behind this game. A late release of game based on an old and obscure cartoon, of which the gameplay and levels bare no resemblance to. This was either a last minute cash grab by Atlus, where a late developed game got reskinned to the only license they could obtain at the time just to sell based on familiarity of the cartoon. Or it could have been one of those development hell scenarios we're becoming all too familiar with. More than likely the first though. *Also, love the unicorn picture behind you. You got great taste*
As a kid i thought the Laff O'Lympics was the best cartoon ever as it had a bunch of Hanna Barbara characters all together, Muttley and Dastardly included. Then Harvey Birdman aired and dethroned Laff Olympics.
The ones in Laff-a-lympics aren’t Muttley and Dastardly, but Mumbly and Dread Baron. Mumbly appeared in another cartoon before that and he wasn’t a villain but a detective dog. He was put in Laff because Muttley was co-owned with other company so he and Dastardly couldn’t appear there.
I like the fact that Muttley is based on Peter Falk’s character in The Great Race. Of course, Dastardly is based back on Jack Lemon’s character from the same movie.

I remember them from the cartoon called "Stop the Pigeon", where they're trying to catch/kill a carrier pigeon in a way that almost feels the same as Tom & Jerry. This game looks kinda cute, if simple. I don't believe I played it, but I do remember the Jetsons one, distinctly because I was playing it around the time the family dog had to get put down. :(

Looks like this was not originally meant to be a game based on Wacky Races. They had probably just made significant progress on an unknown platformer, then they picked up the Wacky Races license and decided to change the characters, collectable items, and story accordingly.
