One of the things I loved about the NES was all the random, strange ideas for games that developers tired out. Video games were still new and the creativity of developers gave us some strange, bizarre but also fascinating concepts. With how much money developing a game costs these days, you don't see as many risks being taken. Thanks for yet another awesome video!
That's my favourite part of the NES too! There are a lot of platformers that everyone knows but I love seeing all the strange ideas and combinations of different genres and mechanics developers were trying out.
How did I not know about this? It would have been an instant buy. This is so far advanced over any pinball games back then.. Thanks for always picking cool obscure titles.
There were a lot of other mainstream pinball video games out there at the time competing with 'Pinball Quest' could indicate why some gamers didn't know about this.
Dwarf I didn’t know about most of it back then, just wasn’t the most glamorous genre for a video game at that time. I assume video pinball still has to be relatively niche now but probably has gotten a much bigger audience at the same time, given all the work Zen and farsight have put in the last decade.

iirc the Pinball Dreams/Fantasies/Illusions series also do a big table with smooth scrolling. They were considered good back in the day. I played them on DOS but two are available on SNES.
Wow what a blast from the past. I finished this game around 2003 and had it burnt on a disc on a NES emulator for my Dreamcast. It's definitely worth at least one play through for the nicely for sure though! I believed I set up the left and right triggers for the paddles which made it intuitive. Great video though!
I love how unique this game is, but the mechanics, compared to a real pinball table, leave much to be desired, and I found myself getting frustrated that my precise shooting skills weren't translating well into this 8-bit game. Which is to be expected. I'll need to check out the more modern takes on this concept for sure. Glad you mentioned them.
I didn't play too much of it, but Creature in the Well was a pretty cool concept. I couldn't really get into Yoku, but I think it's because I was bad at it.
I love when developers take a mediocre concept, like pinball, and get really creative with it. But I'm glad you brought up Pinball wizard. That felt like a missed opportunity and we were all thinking it.

This game was a real treat. I never was able to get past the second level on rpg mode on the physical console as a kid whenever I rented the game, but finally beat the game on an emulator around 20 years later. The bigger treat was finding a reasonably priced loose cart around the same time.
This was one of the very few pinball games I ever had any interest in and it was just for that RPG mode. Rented this one frequently back in the day. I was wondering if Rollers of the Realm was going to get a mention here. It's my personal recommendation for anybody who wants a modern Pinball Quest.
i loved this game as a kid. my parents were broke so we could only get cheap new games. so from sears, we got this and Hoops. played the shit outta both games.
You really did your research on similar games. While I was watching my mind was immediately thinking about how it seemed the concept of mixing pinball with something else seemed a little lost until you mentioned current games. I was also thinking about the Crush series, more specifically Jaki Crush on the SNES, I strongly recommend that one, it fixes the issue you had with Alien Crush and it looks fantastic as well.
@@Cannotbetamed1 give it a shot. While it doesn't seem to have something like the RPG mode, it is engaging with all the mini-games and changes that happen in the playing field.

This looks like the original devil's/aliens crush but even better with more levels and a quest. Can't believe I'm just now finding out about this game.
When I was a kid, I wasn't very attracted to this game because of its cover art. As a common child I wanted to play Ninja Turtles, Double Dragon and such. Now I want to play it so badly!

I loved pinball and pinball games as a kid. So much so I eventually bought an actual machine that has pride of place in our living room :D Great video Pam.
I loved me some Pinball Quest back in the day even though I was never big on regular pinball games. The pinball tables here would be forgotten if they weren't put together with a little progression and a few RPG elements could add to a game. It also shows some of the problem of the old RPG elements that were not well explained or thought out. For example, no matter how strong they are, it's hard to imagine playing more for flippers that will cause you to drop back to the last level randomly. It's very short, not at all the length of an RPG. It fits more in with a game like Marble Madness, a game about travelling through a short number of levels, than an RPG. It hasn't aged as well as other games, but I think there are some ideas here worth looking at.
Yeah, I definitely would not call this an RPG just because it has some upgrades. More of a pinball adventure with a little story and progression of levels.

very interesting, I had never heard anything about that game. I found him quite authentic in his proposal,
it is unfortunate to have only had spiritual successors.
This is very unique and obscure! More than the other games: Pinball Action, Time Scanner (Sega) and the NES Pinball game (of the Black Box games). This made me interesting.
Pokemon Pinball Ruby and Sapphire is excellent
Metroid Prime Pinball too
@@finnhaverkamp Metroid Prime Pinball is, perhaps, the most challenging video pinball game I've ever played. It's very difficult to crack over 10,000 points which is unusual for a pinball game.
LOVED this game as a kid.
I had this game! I don't know where my parents found it, but I got it I think for Christmas one year. I had bit of a low budget feel, but was still pretty fun.
This was a good game, though I haven't played it yet. That part is funny when the Devil shop beats you up if he catches you trying to steal XD Great concept, but it's kind of weird the dark theme of this game - demons, witches, Devil store owner and Biezelbub as the final boss? : /
Holy Crow! I totally forgot about this game!
A repeat rental for me and my friends as kids...
I miss the excitement of renting games from a video store.
Like, that moment when you see the blue plastic case, with the cartridge inside, behind the official box...
“ LOOK!
ITS F’ing IN!!
Im renting it!”
I missing renting games and movies both
I just picked this up on Ebay about a week ago. Never played it when I was younger, but looks decent for a playthrough
I saw this on my recommended. Will need to try this game out, love pinball!
Bizarre, I didn't know this existed. Perhaps I've joined a new timeline! Hello from my old 2020 world, it was fun, everything must be great if there is a pinball themed RPG game in this one.
That Community reference was pure perfection! :D
We have to rescue the Princess? How original...
Though the idea of making a pinball game into an RPG is unique and interesting. I didn't know about this game, so will have to try it out now.
