The first time I've heard this in 1973,i was in first year high school, I can't forget the melody and rhythm that registers in my mind/heart, now I'm in my 58th years of life, a retired police commission officer of the Philippine national police, still I love/like the song/melody...
When I was 12 years old in 1981 and discovered this song from my mom's record... and i couldn't help loving this song so much... This song keeps haunting in my mind for years. I can't forget how many beautiful moments it gave me whenever I listened to it in those good old days... Such a beautiful piece of art work.... Thanks a lot David Gates.
I had a heck of a time getting a copy of this single when it came out in 1973. I had to special order from a dept. store. Rode my best friend's 10 speed bike 12 miles each way to order and to pick it up but it was worth it.
Well.. I have grown up with bread.. They are a beautiful group.. Sweet.. Tender.. Lovable... I am 64 now. They are always a sweet reference. Whenever I feel lonely I always feel cozy with them. I am very glad that they have been around in my life and in my listenings. All the best to you all!
The most beautiful English song I have ever heard. My older brother showed it to me when I was around 13 years old. It took me 20 more years to understand the lyrics and, let me tell you: I was not disappointed!
I've always loved David Gates and the Bread. First heard their LP from my dad's collection back in 1982,was a young lass then. Fast forward, my neuro patient played it through her CD player the other day, says she found comfort in listening to it. Fair enough, replayed it many times, good thing other patients were very considerate of her. So here I am, decluttering my mind through this timeless classic.
my dad told me that he passed this as a poem assignment in class and his teacher did not know the song, thus, did not catch him :) now that he is gone, I came back looking for this song and it feels like he is talking to me, telling me he'll visit me for a while sometimes. Papa, I miss you but I'll see you again :)
Love this song. His vocal purity reminds me of Karen Carpenter. Perfect pitch. Beautiful use of the moog synth. Thanks for the memories and posting this.
Great job with a great song. I am LDS also as is David Gates. Now I know why I have loved his music all my life! Saw Bread in concert in 1979 in Huntington,WV, what a concert! I was blessed. Hate it that he is the only living member of the band. But may Heavenly Father continue to bless him and his Family! Thanks again Rommel 1020
Wow! blast from the past. David Gates so underestimated as a songwriter. This is a beautifully evocative suite. Probably one of his best. We were blessed to have this talent to serenade our youth!
Probably the best song that never hit the top 40. Although I knew David Gates and Bread as I was born in 1960, I did not know this song until my girlfriend shared it with me about 10 years ago. I was traveling with work about 3 weeks every month, and she used this song as a kind of “coping mechanism”. When we broke up a few years later, the song became MY coping mechanism - so full of hope, wonder and joy.
Thanks for posting a beautiful song a beautiful voice. I used to close my door listen to this whole album as my mom was in th kitchen and my dad was in the garage or watching baseball. They're gone now and it's ok but I miss them and then dearly. Muffet-it's alright. You just need to understand what is truly good for you -you will have. What is not good for you-you will not have. All this will be clear if you keep your eyes open enough to see.. Wishing peace of mind to all....
1973 I was a first year hs at meycawayan institute in the province of bulacan Philippines, when I first heard this song, and up to now everytime I hear this I'm delighted and memories keep coming back, now I'm happily married to the owner of this tablet and still enjoying the music...P/Sr Inspector Manny Payongayong (retired)
Goosebumps to this day. The man has written some wonderful and touching music. He also had great talent as a musician and often played many of the instruments on the recordings himself. I recall an old photo of him recording with a Hofner "Beatle bass" (500/1).
It's the evening of April 20, 2024, feeling nostalgic listening to 70s song and reminiscing my high school years, thanks Bread and David Gates for your songs!
On this day in 1973 {July 8th} "Clouds" by David Gates entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart at position #71; and on August 12th, 1973 it peaked at #47 {for 2 weeks} and spent 8 weeks on the Top 100... The record's B-side is a cute little tune titled "I Use The Soap"... As a solo artist he had seven Top 100 records between 1973 and 1981, his biggest hit was "Goodbye Girl", it reached #15 {for 2 weeks} on April 9th, 1978... Bread had thirteen Top 100 records between 1970 and 1977... Mr. Gates will celebrate his 74th birthday this coming December 11th, 2014...
the voice of hearts is in this song.. not to mention other compositions of bread and david gates..these songs voice out someone's heart, a heart that is longing for something...i love bread and david gates..the song of my life...
Thanks for posting. Beautiful song and such a beautiful voice. Used to close my door at 16 and listen to this album over and over again as my mom was busy in the kitchen and my dad in the garage. They're both gone now...it's ok but I missthem and then dearly.. Muffet don't be sad...what is good for you honey you will have. If it is not good for you you won't get it. It really is that simple.
💓This song reminds me of the time i flew back to CA after a wedding..talking to the clouds and The Father! I was returning to see someone i cared deeply for. Little did i know i would return later without my Special Person! However, in another place and time I will return on a cloud..or he will return for me!🙏✨♾️❤
David was a master song craftsman , and had a beautiful sense of melody , and he was blessed to have a hauntingly beautiful voice to accompany his songs ,, yes absolutely chills
Bread...what a name what a concept. Bread as genuine, genuine sentiments, clean sentiments and emotions. What the F do we have today? A surrogate for everything. Im so glad I belong to the Bread generation ! Bread as this band, bread as that baked by mom at home....
The pic where is shown only the shadow of them is magical... remembers anything we don't know what, brings feelings so deeply carved on the heart... wonderful song! Wunderbar lied!
One of my favorite songs of David Gates... I just love everything about it... Thanks for posting ROMMEL 1020... Take care and God Bless U and Your Loved Ones!!!

this song is for all of us survivors in life and love be glad that we all made here together listening and sharing each others thoughts .through this wonderful song and a wonderful group
Not sure why this wasn't a bigger hit A near perfectly crafted pop song from the era when adult contemporary artists (Carpenters, Manilow, Newton-John) dominated AM radio formats. David Gates vocal is the best of his career.
A friend of mine, long time ago, sold me a very scratch, used LP - David Gates "First" and ever since that time I was sold. By the way - did you know, that Larry Knechtel from Bread played the Piano on Simon and Garfunkels Bridge Over Troubled Water? 😎(pardon my English - I am from Denmark)

I don't know but every time I hear old songs so beautiful such as this, I can't stop myself from hating what today's generation of music are performing. @taratupa73...that was and is, the music "business". I'm just grateful that there were A & R people who had souls enough to realize that Gates and Bread were the immense talents they were...their music has affected my life deeply, both as a musician and a composer.

Classic Sir❤
I was 16 when I first heard this playing on my Dad's radio at 5am. I just lay there in the dark feeling how gorgeous this song was. I miss my Father.
One of the most beautiful songs ever written....
David Gates has a very adroit way of adapting lyrics to music. I can't believe this single narrowly missed the Top 40! Excellent!
Bravo, David!

Me too. This and Joan Baez' Diamonds and Rustalways hit me in the gut. Lots of memories tied to the melodies.

I've been doing this song for almost forty years. It always amazes people. One of MY favorites. A lot of people don't remember this song.
What a group! This generation misses the variety we had back in the seventies.

David Gates musical genius
que hermoso tema nubes que nostalgia me trae Bread
As I recall the winds were high
Across the sea toward land.
The ocean spray blew up the beach
To mingle with the sand.
And there I stood in silence
With face against the cold
Staring out at all the waves
Choose your reveries
Keep the good, leave the bad
Take a few of these, the sweeter memories
Don't forget them please, the sweeter memories
To set your mind at ease, the truest remedies
Are the sweeter memories
