Yeah, he was noticed during his time with the Stray Cats, and once again got recognition back during the Swing revival in the late 90's. He got a Grammy for "Sleepwalk" which is 4 minutes of guitar bliss: -highly- recommended.
Big band, swing, rock-a-billy music hasn't gotten a lot of airplay in quite some time now, but Brian Setzer's absolutely a master of his craft.

The swing revival of the late 90s was such a cool time. I had just graduated from HS in 97 and me and my friends were swing dancing FREAKS!
We used to go to this club called Frankie’s Blue Room that had Swing Night on Thursdays and we would dance till we dropped.
I never sweat so much or had so much fun. Those were the DAYS!!! Wish it had lasted longer but so much great music came from that little microburst!

I remember this and it was a short lived fad. I'd rather listen to big band music from the original era or rock music. Setzer sound and image was watered down swing music into repetitive pop music format to fit in with the times. Although this isn't bad and still listenable in comparison to today's popular music, if one can even deem today's top 40 as music.

Even though the drug culture was prevalent in the 1960's to 1980's, there was still enough people who still continued to dance in those decades and appreciated it (don't forget those are three decades of the prominence on television of "American Bandstand", "Soul Train" and "Solid Gold".) I do feel that perhaps one things that got lost in dancing was some of the more togetherness of couples during more up tempo tunes, although that started to make a comeback and surprisingly so during the late-1970's and the Disco era -- check out the video on youtube for Van McCoy's "The Hustle" to witness that. The later half of the 1980's and the 1990's started to give us more songs that would be able to have couples dance up tempo tunes closer together. But I do agree that has seemed to have gotten loss, since sometime in the last decade, the importance (and even necessity, in my not so humble opinion) of the dance and not just right to the let's go to the bed, part. And this is despite the popularity of such television shows as "Dancing With the Stars". It's almost like people want to watch others dance, but not do so ourselves, which to me is so strange and stupid.

I saw the Cats at the Hollywood Palladium in the early '80s. Things got wild, and bouncers were chasing stage divers away, and Brian got distracted -- while he kept on singing and playing. The scrum fell away (the Palladium's bouncers were rough) and Brian looked around, and went back to his rock and roll voice. While truly distracted from his performance, Brian's voice was naturally *better* -- much smoother and more refined, with all the notes well within his range and control. Perfect pitch.
I realized, at that moment, that his voice was far beyond anyone else I'd ever seen. Brian Setzer had been singing "down" to everyone else's level, to sing as poorly (in comparison with HIS natural voice) as all the other rock and rollers and popular performers, say, Elvis. Or Jerry Lee. Or Eddie. Or anyone -- from Roger Daltry, to Billy Idol, to John Fogerty, Louis Prima, Louis Jordan, the Jordanaires, anyone. ANYONE. He blew them ALL away in that moment of distraction.
Brian Setzer may be the best singer who has ever lived. So I rejoice in that. Also, I feel a little cheated.
      You do you, Brian!
      Sing, boy! Sing!

Swing dancing is soooo much fun, and the best exercise. BTW (for those who don't know) all those acrobatics and aerials in the video are *performance* swing. Social swing dancers (the rest of us) do NOT do that on the dance floor --- it's waaaay too dangerous to everyone else. It also hogs all the space, 'cause those moves need a lot of empty peripheral space. But there are plenty of fun (and funny) moves to be had with both feet on the ground. So much fun moving through space, to the music, communicating with your partners through movement. (Most people change partners throughout an evening of dance and dance with all different kinds of people. That's the social part of social dancing!)

@@frank234561 it was a huge fad. I lived near San Francisco. They closed off entire streets on weekends often for swing festivals with dancers and costumes and bands. It was huge but only lasted about 1-2 years: thank the movie "Swingers" for bringing the fad mainstream

@@frank234561 there was squirrel nut zippers, big bad voodoo daddy, royal crown review and that gave way to the ska movement of the 90s once the swing stuff died down. Movies like swingers and The Mask helped glamorize the genre. Sorry you lived in a bubble (and still obviously do) but big bands were a big deal for a brief time.

Brian is a most-talented guitarist, and he has a stunning collection of Gretsches, some highly unusual, pimped to the max and very rare. One of the really great musicians of our times - I love his stuff (and I am normally a modern jazz, rock & metal man...).

Just another aspect of what made the mid to late 1990s the greatest decade EVER!!!!
Who would have thought that swing music would have made a roaring come back in the '90s?
But thanks to a little known spiritual revolution, it did!!
Thanks to Brian Setzer, Cherry Poppin' Daddies and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, all of which is included my rock and roll collection.
    The 1940's was jamming, baby!
The big bands and the dance routines were really cool.
This song was a regular staple on the alternative rock stations back then.
The best of times, hands down.

From 'The Stray Cats' days to the 'Orchestra' to his role in the movie 'La Bamba' as Eddie Cochran, man Brian Setzer just set stages on fire with his performances, the rockabilly style of his back in the 80's I loved as a kid, but when he brought swing out in the 90's with the 'Orchestra', man it was just pure fire and incredibly exciting to witness, definitely a legend of both genres and as a guitarist / singer, respectively, 'Rock This Town' is also a great tune by 'The Stray Cats', also.
