I loved it when you said you were going to do a little math. Whenever my female students groaned about doing math (in the ghetto/barrio school in which I taught, girls were encouraged NOT to do well in math and science by their families, since the families didn't expect their daughters to go to college), I'd point out--and demonstrate--the math required to increase or decrease recipes or even mix powdered baby formula; the math required to alter sewing patterns; and the math required simply to balance a checkbook and pay bills. They were always amazed at the math required to run households, and the boys in the class gained a little more respect for their mothers' abilities.
Best skirt tutorial, for tulle, that I have found. And I looked at many. Thank you for the detailed instructions. I can't wait to make my skirt! (I bought matte black and sparkle black for layering)
darn it! where were you two days ago when i needed this for making my daughters halloween costume?? haha. it turned out fine though, but i could have really used yourbexplanations.youre the best teacher
I used invisible thread. Yea. I completed the skirt. 7 layers of tulle, and a 1.5 inch metallic (glittery) elastic band. I am pleased with the outcome. (I sew, but by no means a seamstress!LOL)
Thank you for this great comprehensive tutorial. If you are using metres, would you still divide your measurements by 1.57? I've seen on other tutorials (using metres) that they divided it by 3.14. thank you!
@@ProfessorPincushion Thank you very much. I did it in inches in the end, to be on the safe side. I used your tutorial to make a salsa costume for my first competition, and I'm loving it! Thank you so much!
10-6-16 Good video. Please do a video on how to change a pattern piece into a V-neck,round neck, square neck, heart shape neck. Thanks Keep up the good work
Awesome vid, one question : Do you need to hem the line at the bottom or doesn't tule fray? Couldn't make it up from the video... Ps sorry for any typo's.. Not my first language.. Dutchie here!
you would have to use a different technique. you couldn't just use ribbon in place of elastic for this skirt because ribbon doesn't stretch at all so it wouldn't work. You can do something similar to no sew tutus in which the tulle is sewn to the ribbon and then the skirt is wrapped around and tied on, kinda like a wrap skirt.
we don't have any tutorials on pleating chiffon specifically. But realize that since chiffon is such a delicate fabric, it doesn't pleat well. This doesn't mean that you can fold it into pleats. It just won't hold a pressed pleat because all it wants to do is be flowy and soft.
12" from waistline is so short for an adult; if using pattern paper that isnt wide enough (can only find barely 32" pattern paper), do I just layer the paper to give me more room?
so, no matter the hip measurement, we divide by 4? and the 1.57 will also be the same number for what ever the measurement? Why 1.57? Could you explain these numbers please? Also, if you have to sew the half circles together, do you have to add seam allowances?
I'm doing this calculation to determine the radius of my quarter circle. 1.57 is actually half of pi (3.14) Yes, if you do half circles, then add your seam allowances to the center straight edges.
there is no set amount, because it depends on the the length of the skirt, the person's size, and how many layers you want to do. It's best to make your pattern, take it with you to the fabric store and use the cutting table to help determine how much you need for each layer.

I think people are surprised at how much math is involved in sewing. It doesn't hurt to put on your thinking cap with this hobby :)
People often act proud of being bad at maths
Personally I was always better at maths than English
I have seen so many videos on how to make a tulle skirt ..by far this one is the best ..ur explanation was so good ..thanks
By far the easiest video to follow thank you
I have found all your instruction to be very clear and cover many important points.
thank you so much!
I was so lost before your tutorial doing this tulle skirt! Thank you for all the minimal details and great tips. Mine turned out great :)))))
yay! please post a pic of your skirt on our fb page. I'd love to see :)
Does twitter counts? I posted it here :) twitter.com/Daamile/status/861643040288624640

I'm glad it still worked out for you! that's all that matters :)
Thanks for this well explained tutorial.😊
Wonderful works
that was so helpful and easy! thank you!
Finally! Thank you so much!
Best video ever !! Awesome
Always inspiring
Would I omit the elastic if I want to make this into a full dress? Solid print material on top, tule skirt on bottom.
Brilliant, thank you
Great tutorial. I need to connect the two halves of tulle (like I did the lining). I will try fat basting stitch. any ideas?

I'm not sure, but if 3.14 works for them, then they must be correct.

Cute skirt 😁
Math is not my strong suit but I am going to try to make this for my daughter
you can do it! please post a pic on our fb page when you finish :)

Why do we divide by 1.57 ? What if we stick to our measurement after dividing by 4 (our circumference )
1.57 is approximately pi/2
Awesome vid, one question : Do you need to hem the line at the bottom or doesn't tule fray? Couldn't make it up from the video...
Ps sorry for any typo's.. Not my first language.. Dutchie here!
No I didn't hem it. With tulle and netting, you usually don't have to worry about fraying. Hope that helps! :)
I'd like to use ribbon rather than elastic for the waistband. Is it the same measurements for the hip and waist?
you would have to use a different technique. you couldn't just use ribbon in place of elastic for this skirt because ribbon doesn't stretch at all so it wouldn't work. You can do something similar to no sew tutus in which the tulle is sewn to the ribbon and then the skirt is wrapped around and tied on, kinda like a wrap skirt.
Thanks for the the tip.
Every time I work with tulle it buches and get staticky. How to I avoid this?
Do you have any videos that show how to pleat a fabric like chiffon for a skirt?

Okay! That is helpful, thank you! I am very new to sewing and your channel is great at helping me understand things.
12" from waistline is so short for an adult; if using pattern paper that isnt wide enough (can only find barely 32" pattern paper), do I just layer the paper to give me more room?
yeah, you can just tape them together
@@ProfessorPincushion That is what I thought but wanted to be sure. Thank you!
Hi, what kind of fabric did you use for under the tulle? I've done some researching, and read many people use taffeta, is that what you used?
I just used apparel lining but you can also use taffeta

I understand now, thank you!
please post a picture to our fb page when you finish your skirt :)
I will. :) This will be my first time attempting a skirt, I am a beginner sewer.
I saw how you sewed the tulle to the waist, but how do you sew it to the hem?
tulle doesn't fray so it doesn't need to be finished. As long as you cut it neatly, you can leave the bottom edge unfinished :)
Where can I find the paper you use to make your pattern ?? I went to Staple and they said they don't sell that :(
amazon.com
google alphanumeric pattern paper. I can never find it in my local stores so I always buy it online. amazon does carry it :)
Thank you for response, love you work and teachings
I used plastic table cloth for a buck at Walmart. I know there's no lines but for this and a ruler it worked!!
Will this work with plus size measurements as well?
sure! :)
What kind of tulle did you use?
I used the standard polyester tulle found at joann's. It's stiffer than something like bridal tulle but it makes for a fuller skirt
What happens if you sew the bottom and the top of the lining and tulle together? Will it still flow out?
You mean attach all the bottom edges together. It'll smash all the layers and probably lose some of its poofiness. It might look a little odd.
Professor Pincushion
okay, thank you!
Wht is tulle called in india...plz answer.
sorry, I don't know
how much fabric we take..if I wanna make skirt ..plz tell me the fabric( L+w)...???

I live in Pakistan ...
Thnx your videos are very helpful thnx a lot

That is one tiny tiny waist. 20 inches!??? 😮
i si
I say FŌLD and HŌLD not Fōd and Hōd. What part of the country is your accent from? Not Chicago lol 😂
20" hip? Did I miss something?
that's just what I chose for my example. You can substitute your own measurments
I was concerned as well, lol. But then I started thinking, it's for a child! xD
Haha I know, that's smaller than my ’small’ thighs.
I feel like I am watching a math class
She divided simple numbers twice... you good?
