How to make a simple square box cushion cover with piping and hidden zip.
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 18 май 2021
- In this video we use techniques from previous videos to make a simple square shape box cushion with piping/ welt all around the top and bottom and a hidden zip with pocket at the end.
The foam cushion inner is 10cm or 4 inches so we cut the border at the same thickness to ensure a nice tight fit. The zip is cut at about 2.5cm or 1 inch thicker than the border before zip is added so it finishes at the same size.
We made the piping and the border both longer than needed so they can be trimmed to the right size while the cover is constructed.
The top and bottom panels have had the stitching allowance added so they end up the right size after piping and border are sewn on. We use 1/2 inch or 12mm stitching allowance.
We hope that this all makes sense and can help people with some basic upholstery skills. Feel free to ask questions and we will answer as best as we can.

You are absolutely right my brother

Great Video, I have 6 cushions to make, and this video was exactly what I was looking for ❤
I made two box cushions yesterday thanks to your video, and also the videos on zippers and welt! Thanks for not taking nonstop through the video, 😂 but instead having the instructions across the bottom. Makes it much easier to know what you are doing. Make some more videos!
That’s absolutely fantastic well done and thanks for letting us know and for watching our videos. We’ve been so busy with normal work we haven’t had the time to make any more videos for a while but it’s on our list of things to get done. Is there anything specific that you would like to see how to do?
Thank you! I like that there's no talking and the instructions are very clear!
Thank you for watching and the great feedback 😁
Ditto on both counts 🥰
Thank you too
Hands down the most clear, helpful video instruction on this subject.
Thank you so much! Really appreciate the feedback 👍🏼 thank you for watching
Best video I have seen!! Love how you just show how to do it and not talk about things we don't care to hear about.
Thank you very much all feedback is greatly appreciated! We’re happy people are finding our videos useful 😄 thanks for watching and best of luck with your projects
Yes, there is nothing worse than a video (or recipe) where the creator goes on and on and on about rubbish. Just get to the information that we are looking for please!
Best video for making a zippered cushion with piping
Thank you very much for the nice comment and thanks for watching, we have a new video coming soon for making a piped and zipped bolster cushion which you may like also!
Gostei muito de seu trabalho, muito bem feita ,parabéns 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
muchas gracias, felicidades por tu trabajo 👍🏼
You made it so simply! Loved the easy way to make these and the very clear instructions with no talking. Thanks!
Hello again! It took me all day but I’m finally done making a 74“ x 15“ bench cushion for my patio. you make it look so easy. I was using Sunbrella fabric which is pretty heavy and those corners are pretty tricky but it’s done and it’s pretty and the continuous zipper although tricky to get it started looks really nice. Thank you again for your lovely tutorial. I have two more cushions to go.
Hi and thanks for the update, that’s a really long cushion and also tricky working with sunbrella so want to say massive well done from us! Practice makes perfect so the next ones should only get easier 😅 thanks again for watching our videos and for the feedback.
I was wondering about sewing the thickness of the seams. I have duck canvas to use and hope my machine can handle it!
It was good to hear yours turned out well
Excellent tutorial - both this and the hidden zipper and piping cord ones. I will no doubt watch many more times before I actually try it myself.
That’s great to hear we’re very happy that our videos are helping people. Thank you very much for watching and for the feedback!
Great videos! I’ve watched these many times and finally had the confidence to sew up a cushion. It wasn’t perfect but not bad for the first time. So glad I had your tutorials to follow!
Thank you very much for the comment and for watching our videos, we’re very happy that they are helping people with their projects
This is the best tutorial….so far. I do learn something new from each upholsterer, Thanks for posting this!!
Thank you very much and you’re more than welcome, we appreciate all the feedback thank you very much for watching our video
I do have a question. Another upholstery attaches the cording to the boxing strip first. Both sides. As opposed to attaching it to the top and bottom seat pieces. By so doing you’re sewing it in a straight line….whats your thought on this. Thanks in advance.
@@blumenaue7590 yes some people do it this way but it does mean you have to be sure your border is exactly the right size and also we find it slightly harder to sew the corners do to the bulk of 3 layers of fabric plus the piping cord.
What a fabulous tutorial‼️😎 Thank you so much, no unnecessary talking, just so straight forward thanks! 🙏🌻
Thank you very much for the great feedback and for watching 😁

Thankyou for this tutorial. I'm a rank upholstery amateur ..... not only have I never done sewing with piping before; but never attempted a box cushion .... let alone with piping. Have just finished my first and am very pleased with how it came out, thanks to your tutorial. It was easy to understand and I never would have tried if I hadn't found it. 😊

And I’ve made it so complicated, thanks so much!
You’re more than welcome we are happy to help, and thank you for watching!
Lifesaver.
My side panels were shifting terribly when I joined the top panel.
Now onto figuring this out on an irregular cushion cover ... with an arm extension.
Thanks for watching and we’re glad that the video helped. The basics for a shaped cushion are the same, plenty of reference marks and make sure they’re meeting up as you see the second panel on. Don’t be afraid to stop and take it apart if it doesn’t look like its working rather than soldier on and have more work to fix it. We will be making videos showing irregular shaped cushion in the future when time allows.
You make it so simple. I really appreciate your skills and send you my best wishes and prayers.
Thank you very much and thanks for watching 😄
Muchas gracias tenía la idea ,y no sabía hacerlo, gracias por los detalles ,muy claro y bello trabajo.felicitaciones!!!!

So beautiful!

GREAT tutorial!!
Thank you very much 😄 and thanks for watching!
I did it! Thanks to you, I was able to make a box cushion with piping and a zipper. Looks great!!! (I used a different video on how to make the zipper panel where you fold the panel in half and sew down the half the width of the zipper, then sew in the zipper and seam rip out the initial zip. I was too nervous to open the zipper and sew that way.) But my cushion looks professionally done!!! Really no mistakes thanks to you!!! I wish I could attach a photo! Much appreciated!
That’s fantastic to hear we’re really happy that our videos are helping people. We have seen that zip technique before and it’s probably a good way to guarantee a pattern match but for speed and not having to remove thread after we prefer this way. Please feel free to send us a picture to contact@premierupholstery.co.uk as we do like to see the result, thank you very much for watching!

You make it look so easy I'll give it a go. Wonderful video
Thanks for watching! You’ll be fine just take your time, don’t be afraid to stop and undo something if it doesn’t look right as it’s easier while making it than pressing on and then taking it apart when it’s all finished. Feel free to ask questions or send us a pic of the finished piece to contact@premierupholstery.co.uk
This was an awesome video. You made it look so easy. Thank you! Becky
Thank you for the great comment Becky and thanks for watching!
Just finished a 6'x15" window seat cushion for my son. For a 1st cushion it turned out pretty decent. Thanks for the tutorial. Next time I am getting a piping foot because it looked so much easier in the vids I watched!
That’s great! And that’s huge for a first cushion well done 👍🏼 yes a piping foot should make things easier. Thank you very much for watching and for the feedback, feel free to send us a picture of the finished cushion to contact@premierupholstery.co.uk
Until you mentioned it, I didn't even know there _was_ such a thing as a piping foot! 😂

Wonderful and elaborate work - the help and advice in upholstery - you make it very easy. Thank you very much for these educational videos. Thank you so very much for providing these fabulous videos! My dad needs extra cushioning in his very expensive chair so I bought the same fabric to cover the latex cushion. I was so nervous about cutting into the very expensive fabric, but having watched your videos over and over, I was able to make it without further reference because it all made so much sense and was so very clear. Thank you doesn’t seem enough! Amazing! I wish I could attach a photo, 🤩🙏🤗😍🥰
Thank for for the great feedback and for watching our videos😁 We’re happy that people are enjoying our videos and that they seem to be helping and are easy to follow. Please feel free to email us some pictures to contact@premierupholstery.co.uk of the finished cushion as we like to see the results!

Love this video, would appreciate it if you could show how to measure and cut this please
Hi and thanks for watching. We will be sure to make a video showing how we would measure different type of cushions as soon as we have time
Exactly the video I was looking for!👍
Had to mute the music 😵💫
But still great video and easy to follow along.
Brilliant and thanks for watching, apologies for the music it’s all we could find but we are working on new videos with talking instead and different music 😅

Thanks for watching and the feedback, yes next time we won’t be using music
Отлично , то , что сейчас нужно !
спасибо и спасибо за просмотр 😄
Can you please tell me what that small piece of border is for? Can you just cut 1 continuous piece of border and attach the zipper to it? Great video!
Hi and thank you for watching. The extra piece is to show how you would make a large cushion where one strip across the roll wouldn’t be long enough to go all the way around and meet the zip.
Здорово. Показали все как это просто можно сшить доступно. Спасибо большое. Успехов вам. И всего хорошего
Большое спасибо, мы ценим отзывы и благодарим вас за просмотр!
Thank you very much we appreciate the feedback and thank you for watching!
I love watching your videos and your instructions are spot on. Even with that I would gladly hire you to make those for me since Pier 1 has gone out of business where I used to get my cushions. Do you hire out?
Thank you very much that’s great to hear! We are usually very busy so don’t have a lot of time and also places that make up cushions non stop are usually a lot cheaper than we can be. Feel free to email us on contact@premierupholstery.co.uk with some pictures/ sizes of what you’ve got and we can take a look though.
It's a great video, thank you. I dont want piping on my bench cushion, as uts fir a camoervan & i don't think itll be confirtable to lie on! Is the process the same, just omit the piping steps?
Thank you very much and thanks for watching. Yes exactly the same just without the piping so even easier! We’ve done plenty of campers with and without piping and both work fine
What size needle and thead is used for leather versus other types of fabric in upholstery sewing
I seem to miss how the notches were made. Initially you folded the panel and made one notch in the center, later there was many notches when you transferred them to the opposing side of the border. Should there be centered notches on every side of the panels? Thank you so much for this awesome instruction video.
Hi and thanks for watching. Yes make a centred notch on each side for your reference points. Mark them by folding and cutting with scissors or by making a mark with a pen or pencil and then using that. Best of luck with your project!
This is SO helpful!! Thank you! Can you give the dimensions of the border pieces…the lengths of the zipper piece and second piece? Many thanks
Thank you and thanks for watching. We don’t have a set size for these as all cushions tend to vary in size and shape. We would usually allow about 4-5” extra for the zip around each side, possibly more for very large cushions, and if you mark this on your pattern you can then work out how long the border needs to be and if you need an extension. You may find that once you’ve made some reference marks of where the zip and border will be that you would find it beneficial to make some pieces longer,or shorter, to make the most of the fabric available. Hope this helps!
Great video. How long did you make the zipper border fabric piece? You noted you made the border and piping both longer than needed but how long is the zipper part? I see its a few inches longer than the cushion bottom and top but by how much? Thank you.
Hi and thanks for watching. There is no fixed rule but we will typically make the zips go about a quarter of the length of the sides of the border so if the side is 20” we would make it long enough to reach about 5” around each side. In some circumstances it will need to be exactly the width of the cushion for example if you can see the sides when it’s sat in a chair and don’t want any zip showing.
Good joob
