How to recover a simple seat, border and decorative top stitch, our friends forklift seat upholster
Просмотров 2,2 тыс.2 года назад
Here’s how we recovered a very badly worn forklift seat for our friend. A nice simple seat with a top panel and a border around the side. We added decorative top stitch which adds detail and also holds all the flange down in the same direction to aid when pulling it down. We used a heavy duty vinyl with high UV exposure rating as it sits outside most days and built up a comfy new inner by layer...

How to make a simple square box cushion cover with piping and hidden zip.
Просмотров 517 тыс.3 года назад
In this video we use techniques from previous videos to make a simple square shape box cushion with piping/ welt all around the top and bottom and a hidden zip with pocket at the end. The foam cushion inner is 10cm or 4 inches so we cut the border at the same thickness to ensure a nice tight fit. The zip is cut at about 2.5cm or 1 inch thicker than the border before zip is added so it finishes ...
How to upholster a simple fabric covered square seat or stool top fixed to a board
Просмотров 134 тыс.4 года назад
Here’s a little video showing how to make a very simple but professional looking fabric cover for a square shaped board that could make a seat or stool top. This works for any sized piece as long as the sides are all square. High density firm foam works the best and you will want to oversize it by roughly a quarter of an inch more than your base board. Make sure you add enough allowance to pull...

How to recover a simple dining chair seat pad, strait edges domed top and pleated corners
Просмотров 184 тыс.5 лет назад
Here is how we reupholster a standard dining chair seat pad that has strait edges and pleats in each corner. With these ones we replaced the sagging webbing with new and added an extra one in each direction before putting new foam on top. We used a firm grade of 1.5inch foam and put a smaller thinner piece of half inch underneath to create the domed effect once upholstered. The fabric used is f...

Sooo helpful!😊
Hi! VERY good video! I'm wondering how you got the slider partially up the closed zipper. Did you just manually pull apart the teeth halfway up? Don't know if I'm coordinated enough to wriggle it in there 😂
@@nancycrenshaw1504 hi and thanks for watching. You put the zip slider on after sewing both sides of zip onto the fabric, slide it strait off the other end, then slide it back on again and leave it half way. Hope that makes sense? 😅

@@donneale7555 hi and thanks for watching our video even if it’s not quite what you were looking for. If you have a simple hand stapler the process is exactly the same and you can also carefully cut foam with a long sharp kitchen knife or an electric carving knife. Hope this helps and best of luck with your upholstery.
Could u come up with more annoying music?
@@bartsolari5035 👀 yes. Thanks for watching though 👍🏼 and mute is always an option
is that the sound of breathing Intermittently with the music? it has put me off thus video whatever it is.
@@felicityhill9343 hi and thanks for watching (some of the video), it’s in the soundtrack and unfortunately we can’t turn it off. You can always mute the sound as it’s not important to the tutorial. All the best with your upholstery work 👍🏼
Why not cut piping on bias?
@@angelahackler6040 Hi and thanks for watching. We don’t find the need for bias piping for most situations. It’s good for some upholstery applications but not needed for most. It tends to stretch which can help for going around curves but can ruin a strait edge if the person sewing doesn’t realise that it’s being pulled and you end up with a ripple effect down the edge of a cushion due to the tension imbalance which we’ve seen a lot of on the learning forums. If you can master strait cut piping and the cuts needed to make it go around corners and bends you’ll massively improve on your skills and knowledge of how cuts affect fabric. That’s our view on it anyway 😄 Hope that helps.
Excellent reply!
@@zimmerbotit thank you 👍🏼
I watched this to determine if I have the bandwidth to make square cushions for my dining chairs... Absolutely not. The video is fantastic and clear, but I do not have the energy to do all that. So props to y'all! Well done.

Saludo cordial. Gracias por este video tutorial. Excelente explicación.
how do you measure it proprely given the exact size of the foam to be put in?
@@markkwong9512 hi and thanks for watching. Yes in this instance we measured the foam and then added our stitching allowance to the top and bottom panels. We did the border at the same thickness as the foam to make it a nice and tight fit.
Hi, can I ask how many meters did it take for the 6 chairs?
@@elhamalmat1018 hi and thanks for watching. We would typically allow 1.5mtr per chair and that will usually leave a little at the end just in case there is a mistake and you need to change a pattern
How do I account for the little zipper hide pockets?

Thank you. I've made these in the past but many years but I needed to, well, bolster my confidence before cutting into costly fabric!

Great Thanks
@@wendywilliams9893 you’re more than welcome, thank you for watching
Exelente muy claro y sin palabras gracias por publicar tus conocimientos.😮
Question: So if I had foam that was [50 x 50 x 10 cm] do I undersize the top and bottom panels so they end up 48cm x 48cm (+ seam allowance) and the border stays 10cm (+ seam allowance)? Last time I made a box cushion It did it to the exact foam measurements and it ended up looking saggy and way to loose. Thanks!
@@meld9444 thank for watching our video. In this situation we would slightly oversize the foam by about 5mm and make the top and bottom panels to the finished size (plus seam allowance) and then cut the border at 10cm with no seam allowance. This will mean the foam is trying to push the cover out and the cover is pulling the foam in and it should then be nice and tight.
@@premierupholstery-upholste90 Thanks for the reply! So my foam should be cut to 50.5 x 50.5 x 10cm? I already cut my foam so I might just add some batting to it. And if I was using a 2cm seam allowance id just leave the sides at 10 cm and would end up 8cm with a nice tight fit? Thanks!
@@meld9444 yes cut to that would be ideal but some wadding will help and yes border will finish smaller than the foam border and give you a nice finish as it’ll slightly dome the top
Extremely hard process and costly cotton fiber bolster
@@Foodielover-648 thanks for watching and the feedback. Poly cushions are pretty much the cheapest option and as this was leftover it was free. The process of making might seem daunting at first but it’s all fairly easy if you follow each step, it’s all basic sewing skills like piping, zip, and sewing round corners.
