To be fair i might be biased ,but in this song i think portnoy 99% of the time did it justice at least from a geeks perspective...i love restraint in some bands,i believe ringo for example did it amazing or Dom from Muse, chad smith from RHCP do that good, but thats because theres something else in the song that fits well at that time, for Nickelback,i dont mind their old songs simple radio hits, but these new ones sound like "copyright free ai hard rock"
When my dad taught me music, one of the first things he taught me was "the notes you choose not to play are every bit as important as the ones you do", and then he introduced me to the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
"That shit makes me bat shit crazy" is actually an amazing lyric. You very rarely get a 4-syllable multi-syllabic rhyme in rock music. Almost exclusively reserved for hip hop. Although "shit" is used to rhyme with itself, so points off for that.
That's why Small Town by John Mellencamp is so genius. What rhymes with "town" better than "town"? Nothing, that what! And that's why he decided to end every single line of the song with the word "town." What a legend!
I’m not a drummer by any means, but It’s crazy how I can recognize all of Portnoys fills lol. Like yep that’s definitely one of the portnoy moment of all time
Nickel back is honestly way underrated, everyone liked them back in the day, but they just became so damn popular people got tired of them and then it became popular to hate them.
From one drum god to another, you can easily point out to Neil Peart with his "Peart Groove" that he does on the ride cymbal on a whoooooooole ton of songs (Spirit of Radio, La Villa Strangiato, etc.)
This has always been my favourite Nickelback song, like I was definitely on the train of originally hating them but after hearing this song a couple years ago I realized that they were a solid band and I got to see them live back in September when they put on a free concert in my city and they were really fucking good. I've also always loved Mike's playing so it was really cool seeing his take on this song, that double bass part in the chorus was killer and a bunch of his drum choices were super solid as well and made an already badass song even more so imo
@@DigitalBath306 To be fair I was a lot younger back then and didn't know much better, but I still have a lot of appreciation for them as musicians and songwriters (even if some stuff isn't that great lol)
Their live show is extremely good. Live mix is like the record. Chad sings spot on. Fantastic stage presence. If you like the songs, it's an outstanding experience.
Not really a NB fan, but my friend talked me intin going to one of their shows, and honestly, they fucking jammed out hard. I couldn't believe my ears.
As one of the nerd virgins dweebs who left a dickriding comment on the Drumeo video lol…I’ll try to defend it. Compared to most of the other drummers in this ‘drum karaoke’ series, I think you have to acknowledge MP’s total confidence and willingness to just leave it as one imperfect take. So many of the other drummers are stressed out and complaining the whole time lol, and end up doing at least 2-3 takes if not more. Yes, that confidence can lead to some overplaying but hey he’s Mike Portnoy that’s what he does, and that’s why they brought him in. I just don’t see many other drummers be that creative and confident on the first take. BUT they are teasing another one of these where he gets his ass kicked way more (since this song/style is basically right in his wheelhouse) so that’ll probably be more interesting. Enjoyed the video, thanks 🤘
First time watcher of one of your vids. I guess you're going for some sort of character and if it was being an elitist douche you nailed it. Moving on.
Confused about the bit at 10:00. The guitar is not playing dotted quarter notes there, it’s playing eighth notes right along with Portnoy’s double bass. Also, the vocals in the verses very much emphasize the pulse, but during the chorus the vocal rhythm shifts away from that. So yeah, I think the double bass choice works. But of course, the song becomes less of a head bobber or a jump-up-and-down song at shows. So, it works either way, for different reasons.
In fact, watching 6:45 again, I’m almost certain that’s why he decided to do the double bass on the chorus, because the guitar switches to playing eighth notes.
Funniest part of the original video is when Portnoy says that if he'd actually ended up playing the tour with Nickelback there's no way he'd have been allowed back into Dream Theater. Seriously though, he's said so many things in interviews over the last several weeks that clearly indicate how happy he is on a very deep and personal level to be back with them. It's incredibly endearing. I wonder about that too because Portnoy's work with Neal Morse has been, in my opinion, representative of his best and most creative drumming. Maybe he just isn't cognizant of how his musical expression found itself most fully realized outside of Dream Theater. Or maybe my own bias doesn't have any bearing on anything. I just hope he can continue with Neal Morse alongside his reintroduction with DT.
Agree with Mike here. The original drum part makes this song sound huge, lets the riff breathe, and takes a back seat to allow the vocals to shine. Mike P's parts are fun, but would garner too much attention for the simplicity of this track.
He tried to hold back and still overplayed it.... but, you know... it's Mike Portnoy so he is required to. People always fellate these professional drummers in these videos for being able to busk through a song at a professional level... but they're often pretty mid. I fucking suck, but give me 10-20 minutes to busk my way through a song semi-convincingly and I can do it.
Okay, that intro was gold. Also, you can see the Jameson splash on your finger, outside the glass. You yelling at Mike to get the point was great. WHEN the new Portnoy DT album comes out, you should do a "Portnoy Fill" counter to see how many times he sneaks the same fill into the new album just to really nail home that he's BACK HOME BABY!
"Hitting the drums so they would sound amazing". I am pretty sure, that the Nickleback drummer definitely gets sample replaced and, most likely, time aligned. So, knowing that, this comment may be inaccurate.
Everybody went nuts over the double bass in the chorus, but actually I think the best change he made was to match the guitar and bass in the verses with his kick. To me, that matched the song better and drove it more, while the double bass in the chorus was maybe too much. Maybe for one chorus.
Mike, "the guitar snob", calling everything *_"Obnoxious!!"_* as he nurses a quadruple shot scotch whisky, neat, with the bottle alongside, watching industry titans play and larp... → ...is the greatest display of unintentional *_irony_* !
Oh yeah, 100% the gimmick, but that's why I watch the drumeo vids. I want to see how x drummer would play y song. It's fun to see that creative mish- mash happen.... mostly. Lol
Yeah... I'm one of those rare Dream Theater fans who thinks that Mangini coming in was the best thing that ever happened to them. I love me some old DT, don't get me wrong, but by somewhere between 6 Degrees and Train of Thought, it'd gone pretty stale. How many fucking albums did we need the same goddamn 10-step doldrums? Mangini came in and absolutely revitalized their sound, and played a lot of their very best stuff. I _adore_ "The Astonishing". Can he be a _touch_ clinical sometimes? Yeah, absolutely. Was he a _bit_ obsessed with his symmetrical kit layout and playing outward instead of left-to-right? Oh hell yeah. But the man is genuinely a beast. My favorite Mangini drum part is in Lost Not Forgotten. A lot of people don't realize that the quick poly kicks near the beginning are actually both feet at once. It's why it sounds so huge! That is _hard._ It's fairly hard to do with your _hands_ let alone your feet! And my favorite DT elitist nonsense was "They never should've gotten rid of Portnoy!" Bitch, he _quit the band._ They didn't "get rid of him". What were they supposed to do, just go mope for a decade while he worked through his demons?
You should do a band overview about Nickelback like you did with Pink Floyd and Tool, going over their music and hearing your thoughts about them and explaining why people love to hate them. Might be fun ^^
lol bro do you judge this hard when a casual is at a DT show and mentions the wrong chord or scale and you absolutely skin him for clout with the other neckbeards

I think people don't understand why Portnoy is so huge ... he is not the best or faster drummer. It is all about his musicality and his role as a music creator. He plays the same way since 2000? Like all the drummers in the world they have their style. When mike plays you know it is him playing. Cheers P.s.: The real last great album by Dream Theater is Octavarium and mike wrote it
Exactly. The double kick detracts from the groove. Man Portnoy pisses me off so much because he clearly has chops but they've always been chops without compositional restraint or understanding of how and when to play in the context of a somg that isn't a virtuosic wank fest of a band who ALL lack compositional awareness simultaneously. I once saw him cover Bonham's drums on When The Levee Breaks and that groove has never sounded more sterile or flat by an accomplished touring musician. It was shockingly bad. So weird.
I loooove portnoy … love him .. but you’re also right… 1. Yes the fills .. but also like you said everyone has their ‘bag of tricks’ reference points and what not. 2. This is not on another level and doesn’t raise the song to some untouchable mystique bc he changed up the drums a bit. He played a decent good tack with a little portnoyism on it. .. I mean I love portnoy .. but I’m not drooling over his take on nickelback
As a previous owner of "All The Wrong Reasons", yeah...Nickelback sounds great. I got free tickets to one of their shows, and they play great, stage presence, sound, lighting, crowdwork are all top tier. Lyrics are basic as hell, if not terrible. Vocals, while yarl derivitive, are great. Why does Nickelback suck? Because all that is by design. Manufactured. Processed. Simple. Ready made for mass consumption. Nickelback is the McRib of bands.
As for Godsmack, they literally played the next day with Bush, and Godsmack Suuuuuucked. Bush...surprisingly good. Bush Nickelback would be a good tour for the less thinky mob.
I think the double kick is better than the original. There's just more drive. Simple. It's not a fast double kick or anything crazy, it just gives the song a little more momentum. That's not the part I enjoyed most though. I liked the syncopated part in the second turnaround of the verse. I liked the half time bit as well just to break things up, you're right though, it comes in prematurely arrangement wise but then, if you were producing this would be pre production since he just made it up on the spot. So no biggy.
Sorry man, the double bass kicks ass no matter what the guitars, bass or vocals are doing. It would never fly thought because of what you said, Chad would not allow it. It takes away from the vocals.
Portnoy's perspective on the drums has always been treating them like they are a full instrument, capable of adding just as much to a song as a guitar or vocal line, rather than the more traditional viewpoint of drums being there to keep the beat and maybe drive dynamic changes and provide the occasional accent with a fill. Does he get carried away sometimes? Sure...but he's Mike f'in Portnoy, so he can do whatever the hell he wants. He doesn't have anything to prove...the list of bands he's drummed for shows just how respected he is in the rock and metal community, just how much trust there is that he can learn it fast, play it right (every time), and be a badass onstage. His musicianship is outstanding, and I am really looking forward to seeing him reign in the excesses of Dream Theater and actually get them writing decent SONGS again (rather than prog metal études with vocals).
Why do you hate Nickelback if its just the lyrics that you seem to have a problem with? They are definitely a bit radio heavy at times (or a lot) but its good music to listen to
Personally i love nickelback chad has a very unique voice do i think he sings about sex and drinking all the time yes i do but that doesnt bother me still a huge fan
ill say i love bad taste i think its hilarious but dont you think its bad taste holding a drink while reacting to a mike portnoy video because well ykno, intended or not its the subtle humour i love
Hah, this is fun. Mike having a go on the fly with this tune. Send Mike to Rush if he's free and bored, they're getting back together, need a great drummer. Would be ace seeing Mike in Rush making the circle complete..
Maybe it's just the quality that Drumeo chose with removing the original drum part but I actually thought guitar part in the chorus was more in line with Portnoy's double bass. But now I totally hear it the other way now that you mention it.
Yeah but no one ever bothers to look at the deep cuts which tbh a lot the time are better than the 'hit' songs like Shakin hands, the betrayal act 3 etc... I absolutely love Nickelback and do wish they would play some of the deep cuts live rather than the hits but I guess they have to cater for the average listener of the band most of the time
On the point about having the same drum fills for 30+ years, I can relate in saying some guitarists get away with using pentatonic scales for their whole legacy. It just sounds good and easy to get away with.
Here for the first time. I liked the commentary. Like, i would enjoy talking to you in a bar. Prob because i like knitpicking. O well, most progfans do. Cheers! Oh, btw, I'm drinking Waterford Gaia 1.1. 🥃

Mangini never learned this. He was allergic to dynamics and space between notes. He hated good drum tone.
When my dad taught me music, one of the first things he taught me was "the notes you choose not to play are every bit as important as the ones you do", and then he introduced me to the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Personally i love nickelback chad has a very unique voice do i think he sings about sex and drinking all the time yes i do but that doesnt bother me still a huge fan
I think you forgot to tell us that you're a massive fan of Portnoy.
ill say i love bad taste i think its hilarious but dont you think its bad taste holding a drink while reacting to a mike portnoy video because well ykno, intended or not its the subtle humour i love
Hah, this is fun. Mike having a go on the fly with this tune. Send Mike to Rush if he's free and bored, they're getting back together, need a great drummer. Would be ace seeing Mike in Rush making the circle complete..
That would be fabulous imo
your camera also stutters, so youtube is slowing our whole systems that use adblock, not only the net browsers. thats illegal
He won't stop talking and complaining about mike talking
Oddly enough it sounds a bit stonerish. Guitartone-wise.
I could listen to Portnoy play the Sponge Bob intro and be happy.
Maybe it's just the quality that Drumeo chose with removing the original drum part but I actually thought guitar part in the chorus was more in line with Portnoy's double bass. But now I totally hear it the other way now that you mention it.
The double bass doesn't suck but it doesn't really work either, it's distracting. Everyone still hating on Nickel back, baaa sheep.
I give this waste of time a year and they'll be back where they were thirteen years ago.
The world will only come together if Mike Portnoy, Taylor Swift, Jason Newsted and Mick Mars come together and make a super group
I wish they would have gone for a deeper cut. For The River is far more rhythmically exciting and has two Nuno Bettencourt solos.
Yeah but no one ever bothers to look at the deep cuts which tbh a lot the time are better than the 'hit' songs like Shakin hands, the betrayal act 3 etc... I absolutely love Nickelback and do wish they would play some of the deep cuts live rather than the hits but I guess they have to cater for the average listener of the band most of the time
Less is always more. Play what is right for the song.
Mike must be wondering where the other 11 minutes of the song is
"If Mike Portnoy had mild brain damage..." 🤣🤣🤣
On the point about having the same drum fills for 30+ years, I can relate in saying some guitarists get away with using pentatonic scales for their whole legacy. It just sounds good and easy to get away with.
Here for the first time. I liked the commentary. Like, i would enjoy talking to you in a bar. Prob because i like knitpicking. O well, most progfans do. Cheers! Oh, btw, I'm drinking Waterford Gaia 1.1. 🥃
Thank you!!!!
Idk why I cringe every time he cuts himself off from laughing hard at his own jokes.
I fucking love super mad as hell Mike
Mike's version drives the song far more than the original even just with the change to the kick in the verses.
Hey man, Babylon 5 is awesome! XD
