      Absolutely, good to see what solar achieves in other yachts at our latitude. We were getting 2kW each day back in September if we could keep the panels facing south.

    So cool that you anchored in Portacloy Beach, I share my time between the US and Ireland and have a little cottage not 10 minutes from there. Had my first sailboat in Oriental many years ago and was tickled to see Paul, Mark and many others on your channel back when you refitted Paragon. I guess the world is a small place if you focus on the the sailing community. Thanks for your videos, continue to enjoy your adventures and always .. fair winds and following seas.

    Glad that you both are over COVID (except for the lingering after effects). I hope you got to visit the EIRE marker at the head of the bay! Those were put up during WWII so that aircraft could see that they had entered neutral territory.

    Hi Drake and Monique. I know you have a nice new Hydro Vane, but curious if you’ve tried “sheet to tiller” steering modified to “sheet to wheel”? Great video thanks for posting.

    • @drakeParagon
      @drakeParagon  9 месяцев назад +1

      I've never tried sheet to tiller/wheel steering. I wonder if that would work on a 20 ton full keel Westsail 42..
      A long time ago on my Westail 32, I broke my Aries wind vane with 600 nautical miles to go enroute from Beautfort, North Carolina to St. Martin. I didn't have an electric autopilot at the time.
      Luckily, we were sailing up wind for most of the remaining trip, and I was able to get the boat to self steer for the most part by:
      - getting on course under sail with both headsail out and mainsail up
      - locking the rudder in place
      - adjusting the sails to stay on course by:
      ---bringing in the main to make the boat head up into the wind
      ---letting the main out to make the boat turn away from the wind
      ---bringing the headsail in to make the boat bear off away from the wind
      ---letting the headsail out make the boat head up into the wind
      I found that by occasionally adjusting the sails I was able to keep the boat on course for long periods without adjustment. But this only works when you're going upwind.

    You didn't say but it looks like Portacloy bay, beautiful spot on the North Co. Mayo coast. ~~~ _/) ~~~~ --|--}

    • @drakeParagon
      @drakeParagon  9 месяцев назад +1

      Yes, that’s Portacloy! What a beautiful anchorage. We loved that we could hear the sound of the waves coming up on the beach and also the sheep all around. We had a wonderful, restful stay, which was just what we needed. We didn’t even go ashore for several days before we got a great weather window to sail direct to Dingle.

    How is your solar set-up? Do you have (MPPT?) controllers on each solar panel?

    • @drakeParagon
      @drakeParagon  9 месяцев назад

      Yes, we have 5 Blue Sky Energy Solar Boost 3024 controllers. Each one is connected to up to 3 panels. www.amazon.com/Blue-Sky-Energy-SB3024DiL-Controller/dp/B007SNLRD6

    I have installed on my boat as well however I haven’t had a chance to try it. How was the first time experience using it?

    • @drakeParagon
      @drakeParagon  9 месяцев назад +1

      So far it's been steering great. I'm not crazy about how much the whole thing vibrates when the rudder's in the water and the boat's under power, so I think I might add a custom brace on the top to hold it more steady. I'm looking forward to when we've sailed with it enough to make a good usage demo and review video. Hopefully soon!

    Drake what was the app you were using to help you set markers and measure 200 feet?

    • @drakeParagon
      @drakeParagon  9 месяцев назад +5

      We've been using the Wärtsilä iSailor iOS app for all of our navigation for years. I think it's a fantastic. When we were sailing in Svalbard in 2018, I was using both the Navionics app and also iSailor app on my iPhone. But found that I couldn't enter waypoints with latitudes that far north in either one of them. I wrote to both companies, asking if there was anyway to fix this. I never heard back from Navionics, but the developers of iSailor wrote back to me right away, saying that they would fix it. A week later they wrote back to me again when they released an update with that functionality working. apps.apple.com/us/app/wärtsilä-isailor/id398456162
