She's a Fletcher class. Just imagine, a couple of these and some smaller destroyer escorts with their task force of jeep carriers took on the Japanese navy off Samar including the super battleship Yamato and sent the fleet running back to Japan
Actually the Japanese didn't push threw and destroy the invasion fleet parked offshore . The Destroyers and US Cruisers did accomplish turning the Yamato around and saving the rest of the US Fleet .
My wife’s dad served on the USS Knapp DD-653 and was on her at Leyte and Okinawa as a Fire Control Petty Officer 2nd Class. We plan on driving up from Florida this August to visit the Kid. We’ve visited the preserved bridge of the USS KNAPP DD-653 Fletcher Class Destroyer on display at the Columbia River Maritime Museum in Astoria, OR. Can’t wait to see an actual Fletcher class destroyer as it was configured at the close of WWII. It’s like visiting a time capsule. My Father-in-law never spoke about his experiences. I know the mKnapp took a kamikaze hit.
My Dad and his twin Brother served on the USS Owen DD 536 and circumnavigated the globe on her 1953, with a 5 Month battle deployment in Korea. You really had to be tough to serve on a Fletcher class destroyer.
im glad to see Kidd in great shape. sad that salem is in such a misreable state.... also most of the iowas could need more care. Happy for texas, as shes getting her drydock when plans are finished :)
used to live in Baton Rouge... Every night I wished for the state to allow the kidd have weekend cruses. Still wishing 😀 I know it will never happen but its cool to think of. And yes, I know how it is docked.
I’ll bet that ship was towed there. Also when I was on the Buck DD761, we would light the boilers the night before departure. Steam is not like your auto. And those ships had many people involved in getting underway. It was very old technology
One of his brother ships still stay as a museum in Greece! Velos!

Classy tribute to a great warship. Thank you for posting.
You're welcome, Michael.
There's another USS Kidd video at ruclips.net/video/g_pbqPaQ_G8/видео.html you might like.
My dad served on the same class, USS Chauncey DD667. Thank you for the unique view.
Glad you liked it, Andy!
Here in Jacksonville now, can't wait to walk it.

I was on frigate in Galveston and when you get down in hull you know then why they sank so quickly !
Today it's on dry land due to the drought. Weeds and grass are growing.

So who's here after watching 'Greyhound'?
That film is still on my, sadly-far-too-long, 'Movies To Watch' list. :-/
I will get to it someday.
No water under her now! Shoreline is at that white tower... for now.

Yeah, with sequestration and all, weekend cruises are probably not in the military budget. But maybe they'd *make* money!
