- Wandering the USS KIDD. This is an unscripted video shot on location at the USS Kidd Veterans Museum in Baton Rouge, LA. Any comments, observations, and or errors are strictly my own.
Shot with a GoPro 4 Black w/Rode VideoMicro Compact Microphone.
This video has been created for the purposes of honoring our historic naval legacy. It is not for monetization.

64 yr old Marine vet, I toured the Kidd and was amazed on how tough life must have been on this ship, for it is not big as ships go. It took me back in time,hard to imagine sailing in 30 ft seas in it! To me the men that served on it were true warriors! Semper Fi my Naval brothers!
For what its worth, the mysterious "loader" between the midships and aft deck housing seen at 28:20 is a practice loader. Gun crews and other back up crew would train on this machine. It was basically a 5" gun mount with no barrel. Much like a football team, a gun crew needed to be proficient in handling ammunition and loading it into the receiver tray rapidly and safely to maintain as high a rate of fire as possible.
My grandfather was the Engineering Officer on board Kidd's older sister, USS Bullard (DD-660). They served together in the Pacific Theater in WW2. Very proud to see one of the sisters still strong and standing.
Great tour. I saw a video ( not sure if you posted it) showing the water level dropped all the way down and people were walking underneath the ship, looking that the propellers etc.. crazy
USS CHARETTE DD-581
Was passed in the service of Greek navy and named Velos. The ship is today a museum and now in the bay of Thessaloniki! It is fletcher class and brother ship to uss Kidd!
Someone posted a video recently of the same ship. Showing how low the river is. They literally walk under the Kidd. It was nice to see what is looked like prior.

Nice tour, I served on DD853, which was a few years after her. Ended up servivg for 23 years but my first ship was a old destroyer that was soon sold to Tuekey, back in '73 as I recall. I was in deck division at that time, our bearthing was under the aft gun mount.
Some of those noises in the first 5 minutes are tough on the ears.
Awesome thank you. I am about to build a 1"125 scale model of the Fletcher and this was super helpful. I plane to detail the heck out of it and add lights
My Uncle's FRA unit built a 1/20 scale Fletcher they used in Parades...my contribution was creating some crew for the model using 1/20 pit crew models I modified into sailors.

I spent 3+ years on the Kidd. Also, crossed the Equator.
And--- took her through the Panama Canal in 1960.
@@4me2retire She is most definitely a beautiful ship. I saw that she was used during the filming of 'Greyhound', and I look forward to see it whenever it gets released.
@@lrdofstrms She was also in "Run Silent- Run Deep". (Circa 1958). "We" played a Japanese destroyer.

Perhaps next time a train is passing through more loudly than an AC/DC concert, might be a good idea to just cut filming until it passes by so we don't lose our sense of hearing.

I went back there Saturday, and I had a blast.
That ship is all business. It make s my former ship FFG46 look like a pleasure craft. Everywhere you turn are guns and ammo. A very different Navy. Very cool. I have to visit her.
You brought up something I have questioned about the dry dock because right now she is out of water I was wondering if they just put the blocks under her right now you can walk under her it's amazing she is dry docked right now

I agree. I remember when the Iowas were still considered reserve ships as well as being museums...
@@lrdofstrms I think that the Iowa class battleships will come back to sea for sure one day and show their power once again to Protect the US.
They still are effectively..still have to be dehumidified ECT ECT they haven't be de miled
Wonderful, a very Hight thank to you from a French modeler, there 45 years ago that my dream is to built a fletcher Class Destroyer the must realistic that is possible, for me it's the must wonderful ship into the world War II.
Wonder if they used it in Tom Hanks Greyhound movie.
She participated in filming the movie.
And she borrowed some items from the Orleck for the movie as well.

I'm not a World of Warships player, just a historian. Trivia Question: Why was the one wooden seat over the trough in the "head" which wasn't for urination painted red, while all of the other wooden seats for the sailers over the trough to have a BM painted black?
Would that be because the 'Hot Seat' was reserved for those with VD?

It wasn't a question that the common observer of the video would have known, but it wasn't a "Final Jeopardy" type, ether.
I was surprised that I just saw one "Hot Seat" given the stats of those who failed the VD exams upon return from shore leave, but the Kidd was just a destroyer. I've seen 4-5 per head in Cruisers and the from the NY Class USS Texas to the USS Iowa class Battlewagons.
Do you have any good trivia regarding WWII Navy? If so, throw one up there.
@@lrdofstrms Or any sexually transmitted disease (STD). Also, I have been told that time 'assigned' to the red seat was considered time stolen from the Navy and was added to the end of the 'offender's' enlistment.
I spent the night on the Kid years ago when my son was a cub scout... they were a 50 or 60 kids sleeping in the bunks with their parents .. what a miserable night it was. However, i laid in the captains bed!!! hahaha... but what a miserable night!
Can't imagine. have to say, our current Destroyers are luxurious compared to the Fletcher Class.
Far as I'm concerned, that tub ain't big enough ❗️ Give me a Heavy Cruiser, Battleship, or Carrier.
