Snow in Baton Rouge January 2025—DJI Air 3 Drone 4K Video
Snow is a rare event in Deep South Baton Rouge, LA, We call it "sneaux," of course. This was the day after the huge storm that blanketed the whole Gulf South down to the coast on 1/21/2025. The sun came out so the melting could begin. That made for nicer looking 4K video than the pretty gray day before.

The weather was perfect to drone the Mississippi River at downtown Baton Rouge, so we did. We flew over a couple of long lines of anchored barges. There turned out to be people on them, so we were careful to avoid them. See if you can spot them. 4K60 video from a DJI Air 3 drone edited with Cyberlink PowerDirector 365, which also provided the music.

Grassy Lake just north of the Shenandoah subdivision in Baton Rouge is one of JD's favorite droning spots. It must be the fountains, which are always fun to orbit. The road is a dead end with a circle, so parking and launching are easy. Grassy Lake seems a bit low on water this day. Scuzzy Lake is more like it. But the two beyond it look pretty good, and the mass entry of ducks was a surprise. ...

JD took his DJI Air 3 drone for a walk this morning. It was a tad windy on previous days so the drone sat in its carry case with a fully charged battery. It was time to use up some of the charge and rain was expected later in the day, not to mention a tropical storm toward week's end. ActiveTrack as used to let the drone follow JD from various positions. But the route was fairly open, so there ...

JD got the urge to try out his old Yuneec Typhoon H hexacopter this morning. Just wanted to make sure it still worked. It did, but the fresh battery didn't last beyond a few minutes of a second flight. May be long in the tooth. There's no FPV view or telemetry overlay on this flight. It's a PITA to do with the huge ST-16 controller and its log files. But JD did narrate it a bit so you'll know w...
City Park Lake Dredging August 2024 via DJI Air 3 Drone

Today's drone flight was a chance to check out the progress of the dredging project at the University Lakes in Baton Rouge. It's been a favorite droning spot, but a few years ago, the lake water got so low they overheated in the summertime and some of them got choked with ugly aquatic plants. Nice flight ✈️ 👌🏿 👏🏿 I love seeing everyone in their snow footage. The snow didn't come further south to central Florida 😢. So no snow footage from me lol
This was great 👍🏿 nice cinema 🎉
Great footage! Happy Friday
I'm wondering if I should update the firmware since everything is working fine with my DJI Air 3. What is your opinion on this? Do you think I should update?
I generally check the 'Net after being notified that a firmware or Fly app update is available. If nobody online is bitching about it, I go ahead and update. My Air 3 is currently running aircraft firmware version 1.00.1500. The RC-2 is at 4.01.0000, and the Fly app is version 1.15.4. All seem to work for me as advertised.
Love the car 🚗 💪🏿👏🏿💪🏿👏🏿🙌🏿🙌🏿🙌🏿👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿. Nice neighborhood as well. I wish my neighborhood was a drone-friendly area. But it is an NFZ area! Military base nearby. So i have to drive to other places whivh i dont mind.
Thanks! The car sure beats the '63 Chevy Bel Aire of my college days. I should use it more often to take my drone to some different places. I always seem to return to the same old nearby spots. The only NFZs I have to avoid is the TFR over LSU's Tiger Stadium during games.
@jdthedjyt Oh yes 🤣 I dislike we can't fly over certain stadiums. I want so badly to fly over Tampa Bay Bucs stadium. But it's in an NFZ 😢😭. The last Superbowl we had a guy said to hell with it and flew over the stadium during the game! Almost got away but the cops were able to find him before he could leave lmao 🤣. I hope the shot was worth it for him 🤣! Others around town you can fly over but only when it's NOT a game going on! Which is understandable!
@@Quis85 It's a bummer they built the Bucs stadium right off the end of a runway at Tampa International Airport. I imagine the Class B airspace goes down to the surface there.. I've flown over the Superdome in New Orleans (with no game in progress, of course). It's under the MSY Class B airspace, but the floor there is at 2,000 feet MSL, so no LAANC approval is needed.
@jdthedjyt I'm super jealous 😫 ! But yes, you're correct the airport is super close. I didn't know it was a runway that ran in the path of the stadium. But it does explain a lot now.
Nice 🎉new subscriber I'm not a DJI pilot but a drone pilot is a drone pilot no matter what he or she flies. That being said! I love ya work!
Thanks! You're right about pilots. I started with a few drones from Yuneec (a quadcopter and a couple of hexacopters). Then I moved to Autel Robotics (EVO 2), then the DJI Air 3. Except for the Yuneec quadcopter, I still fly them all. I was within an inch of buying a U.S.-made Skydio when they got out of the consumer drone business.
@jdthedjyt Skydio was my go-to as well. Then they jacked up the price and did what they did. Dji I said no because too many steps before you fly. Then a lot of times areas you can fly you can't fly simply because it's a DJI drone. Autel Evo Lite Plus was a winner. Beginner drones before i got the Autel was. Ruko F11 gim1 and 2 then I got the Flightelf Cinemaster 2pro. Once that acted up I was good enough. I spent the money on a good Autel! Been flying for two years just now recently last year posting on RUclips!
Love the video!!! Were you able to keep your eye on the drone from that far or did you primarily have to rely on the screen. Thanks!!!😊
Thanks, Jim! As a U.S drone pilot, I must be able to physically see my drone at all times. But that does not mean that I have to look at it all the time. Otherwise, there'd be no point in having a controller screen with a drone camera view and a bunch of telemetry because the pilot couldn't take his eye off the drone to look at the screen. When I'm shooting drone video or photographs, much of my time is spent looking at the screen rather than the drone. But as long as I can look up at the sky and see the drone, that's fine. And I often move to a new vantage point if the drone will be flying behind another object for any significant length of time so that I can physically see the drone. In that case, unless I reset the home (takeoff) point to my new location, the telemetry doesn't necessarily indicate how far away from me the drone actually is. Some drones allow for connecting multiple controllers. The pilot uses one controller and physically watches the drone full time. A second crew member acts as camera operator and watches his screen full time. Or the second crew member can be a visual observer who watches the drone physically full time.
Very cool! Great run today! From Sweden! 🇸🇪
Pretty cool video mister
Coolness!!! Sure makes getting your steps in for the day fun.
Like 10 congratulations for the video 🇧🇷🎉
Is this for the air 3 Or air 3 s
This firmware and app update is on my Air 3. I don't have a 3S (yet 🙂). The app update provides the one-touch enabling of "Focus Track," which used to be called "Subject Scanning" and required using the menu to turn it on and off.
Thank you
👍👍
Exploring cell towers is pretty cool.
Nice viewpoint.
Things often look better when you're high. 😀
A nice waypoint flight video. Thank you for sharing.😎
Did you ever turn it off of sports mode before you had it follow you? I believe when it’s turned into sports mode the obstacle avoidance sensors are turned off.
True, when you switch to Sport Mode, obstacle avoidance switches off. But when you return to Normal Mode, it switches on again. You can see it work to duck under the branches of the first tree encountered, then return to the set altitude before it gets to the deadly river birch.
@@jdthedjyt I didn't know if you turned it back to normal mode is why I was asking.
Wow! This is damn educative and nice.
DJI is still a pretty good ways from Skydio! Sorry for your crash and glad you had the Care Refresh package! Thanks for sharing.
Artificial Intelligence is artificial but is it intelligent? I think this video proves it's not ready for primetime yet.
Apparently, I was a little overconfident in it.
Interesting. The whole system seems like it is two feet or so off to one side- both in centering "the target", ie, you, in the screen, and finding "home". Compass calibration? I like the narration.
The target doesn't have to be centered in the frame. If it's off to one side when you draw the box around it, it will remain in that position in the frame as you move the drone. It didn't ask for an aircraft compass calibration--only a controller compass calibration. I therefore calibrated the controller compass, but not the aircraft's. Next time, I'll calibrate the aircraft compass anyway. That may be what affected landing accuracy. Usually, it's spot-on.
Wow! Sorry,Ouch! Always fly your own drone i guess?
Once they see this video, nobody else may want me flying their drone! 🙂
Smooth footage. Looking to buy my next drone ATM. I'm leaning towards long range + wind sturdy + smooth footage such as this
Thanks, Justin. Good luck with the new drone. So far, I'm really happy with the air 3, and with DJI's customer service.
Nice video
Nice smooth enjoyable flight patterns. Thank you for sharing.
Sweet. Thanks.
Nice video. How did you get only the waypoints map, elevation and distance to show up without all the other stuff on the screen?
Thanks, Tino. I edited with Cyberlink PowerDirector 365. I used its video masking tool to mask off all the FPV video from the controller screen recording except the map, and then a second time to mask off everything but the altitude and distance display. Each masked video was a separate track stacked and synced on top of the 4K recording from the SD card. Hope that explains it adequately. Most multi-track video editors will handle the job in a similar way.
Did I hear you say that the gimbal can be controlled MANUALLY whlie on a waypoint mission? If so, how do you set the gimbal to manual?
Yes. When you set up a waypoint, for the Gimbal Tilt parameter, options are Face POI, Manual, and Custom. Just choose Manual. Then, If you want manual control of the gimbal at all waypoints, just click "Apply to All" on the upper right of the parameters screen. The same technique applies to the Heading parameter for each waypoint.
@@jdthedjyt Thanks. Yes, this would the way to achieve manual control but my problem is that the gimbal tilt options don’t appear on the app screen at present though, as I remember, they were visible when I was first using my drone. I think later firmware updates have messed things up. I am also unable access “ActiveTrack” with the options of tracking from different directions, though, at first this, too, was available. Do you know how to fix this? I have tried both reverting to factory settings and deleting and reinstalling the app but nothing has worked.
@@srilankavideos6105 Open the Waypoint Planner. Choose a waypoint from a mission you've already saved or click the map to create a waypoint in a new mission. At the bottom right of the screen, click the waypoint and you should see a strip of options for Camera Action, Altitude, Speed, etc.. You may have to drag the strip to the left to expose the Gimbal Tilt option. Click that option and a button should appear on the lowest part of the strip. Click that button and you should see options for Face POI, Manual, and Custom. Choose Manual to allow manual control of the gimbal as you fly the waypoint mission. For the Active Shots, get the aircraft in the air, yaw it to face you, then draw a box on the screen around you. Default of Spotlight should appear. Choose the Active Track option to its left and quickly click Go before it defaults back to Spotlight. The follow position dial should appear in the lower left. Start moving and then click somewhere on the dial to choose the location around you from which you want it to observe you (Back, Front, Left, Right, or in between). Hope this helps. Good luck!
@@jdthedjyt Thanks. I followed your instructions for setting the gimbal to manual control and it worked! But, unfortunately, I am still unable to access the feature for tracking in different directions. The follow position dial you referred to doesn't appear on my screen.
@@srilankavideos6105 I'm glad you got gimbal control on waypoints working. As for ActiveTrack, all I can suggest is that you have to be quick on the trigger to click Go after drawing the box on your target and clicking ActiveTrack. DJI doesn't give you much time to click Go before reverting to the default Spotlight mode. And make sure your click of the Go button is actually "taking." We're having severe thunderstorms at the moment here, so I can't put my Air 3 up to try it again. Good luck.
You sir saved me! I have been trying for a month how to do this! Thanks for a great video, actually the description!
You sir are MY HERO!!! I have been looking for this for months and everyone said I would have to have some "special" app to do what you just did. Autel used to do that as it was called "cable cam" (where the pilot can control movements of the drone on its waypoints). Thank you very much. Hopefully I can do that with my new air 3 with all updated software. PS. You earned a subscriber.
Not sure whether Autel ever called their waypoint missions "Cahle Cam," but Yuneec certainly did. Like DJI, Yuneec connected the waypoints with smooth Bezier curves. The Autel EVO waypoint missions always stopped at each waypoint, yawed to the new heading for the next segment, then continued. Autel may have issued a firmware update to make the stops optional, but if they did, they never offered it to me for download. I've posted waypoint missions from all 3 (DJI, Autel, and Yuneec), so you can check those out if you'd like. And thanks for subscribing!
Could it be a straight line between waypoints? It is not curved, please clarify that
Waypoints missions planned on the DJI Air 3 get connected by smooth Bezier curves. Not what you want for mapping or photogrammetry. The Air 3 might not be the best consumer-grade choice for that work. The Autel Robotics EVO II with its software for waypoints would be a better choice at the consumer level. Its Mission Planner has an option for automatic grid layouts of waypoints specifically for mapping. Or go with an Enterprise-level drone from DJI or Autel for mapping,
Enjoyed watching your Waypoint flight with the Air 3. Looking forward to getting mine. Undecided about keeping my Mini 3 Pro. Probably will keep it for those intimate moments of shooting. LOL! Baton Rouge is beautiful. Been there once or twice years ago.

Great job on your video. I enjoyed watching it. Did you use any lens filters for this? Once the Air 3 went up to 158 feet on takeoff could you hear it at that height? Thanks for taking the time to share this.

Got 4 batteries on charge now for non-compliant flying later today. The FAA can go pound sand… it’s good to be a gangster!
Does it work with elevation? Without hard turn manuver?
Can't say for sure. Didn't try using different altitudes at the waypoints. But give me a few days and I'll try running this mission again with some altitude changes. Or maybe somebody else can chime in with a definitive answer.
