A deep socket with a little tape to hold the nut while threading it back on is key to this install. I’m so glad I read these comments because this is NOT an easy install. Everything about uninstalling the OEM light and installing the new Tacoma 3rd brake light is easy to the point of threading the nuts back on the Tacoma 3rd brake light. As mentioned in the comments, the bolt studs are about 1/4” shorter on this replacement light then the OEM brake light, making it so much more difficult to thread the nuts back on. Unless you have some extremely skinny long fingers, you aren’t going to be reaching it by hand. I had two helpers because the first one left me after we both got completely frustrated after dropping the nuts into the truck frame multiple times. After taking the light back off, I was able to retrieve the nuts and get another volunteer to help me hold the headliner back so I could work on threading the nuts back on. Somehow, they managed to hold the headliner back far enough that it didn’t put a permanent crease in it, but I was lucky, after reading about many other people installing this light using the instructions in the TL video, ended up with permanent headliner creases. TL - improve this light by making the following changes. 1. Don’t have it made in China. 2. Make the bolts at least as long as the OEM brake light, if not longer. 3. Make the on/off switch accessible from the inside of the truck instead of having to take the entire light off and having to go through this painful process again. I was so exhausted and frustrated after the install that I didn’t even enjoy the performance of the light. I’ll look at it tomorrow. After that frustrating install, I can’t look at it anymore today. I’ve been a long time consumer and supporter of Tacoma Lifestyle and will continue to be so. I’m just asking that y’all take my suggestions into consideration. Thank you.

I agree with you Rob I did it by myself today took me four and a half hours to do and at the pull down the hanger Clips in the back as well as the clips for the handles basically I dropped half of my roof panel just so I can access the bolts to change out the brake lights and this new one they failed to mention that the bolts were a lot shorter than the OEM and I agree with most everybody here it looks nice but just ain't worth it.

Wish I had read this comment before ordering the light, after watching this video which made it look a lot easier. Glad to hear that I wasn’t the only one struggling with this though. Going to see if the aftermarket yota shop near me will do it for a reasonable price. (Probably not 😂)

Just got the new light in, and 100 percent agree with everything this installer said. I did it by myself, In an hour and a half, but was absolutely frustrated. All the suggestions are very much value added. I wrench for a living, so I knew the mindset I was going to have to get into, but save the next customer the frustration and make a more transparent video, and improve the length of the studs. Thank you.

After reading all the comments and it surely helped with my installation I am here to leave my comments to help others. I wasn't looking forward to installing the light and I procrastinated for a year after buying it, due to reading some comments and also that I had the recall done in case of leaks which I never experienced. First off if you can do this with two people it would be best, but I did it solo which might have taken longer. Have patience with the install and you will get it done. Have nylon pry tools from Harbor Freight or elsewhere and they will come in handy when removing the stock light. I removed the hanger clips, dome light, top section of the rear pillars, and grab handles. If you remove the top of the pillars you should remove the door weather stripping and it makes things much easier as it loosed the feet that are under it. You might be able to get away with the hanger clips if you have another person to hold the headliner down while you work. When removing the nuts do not worry about dropping them because you can access them once the light is removed. Once the nuts are removed I used painter's tape around the light to protect the paint. I then worked on prying off the trim piece first and then the light. If you had the recall done it might be a little harder since Toyota sealed it up much better than stock due to leaks. Keep in mind just like the new light has there are two metal clips that you will have to use your flat pry tool and release them for the light to come out. Once out I removed all of the leftover silicone and I used a spray sticker remover which worked well.
IMPORTANT: Before installing the light check to make sure the switch is operating in the correct position and lucky I did because it was backwards from the instructions, my on position did not pulse the light but instead the off position did. I used Permatex black silicone 75150 to seal the light and also on the trim piece and I want to make sure I have no leak issues in the future. The stock nuts and nuts included with the light are the exact same thread size and the head size is smaller, I used the stock nuts which I felt made things a little easier. So my fear of dropping the nut off the end of the deep socket built up anxiety. Luckily I read another comment that said to use electrical tape or plumber's putty and I went with electrical tape. It worked very well and one thing I would change would be to use a piece at least 2" or longer and it makes it that much simpler to remove off the stud once the nut is in place. The first side I was able to grab the tape with needle nose pliers pretty quickly so when doing the other side I did not think to put a longer piece on and spent thirty minutes trying to get it out and I finally was able to by loosening the nut a little. I then tightened the nuts and from that point I tested the light to make sure it was functioning correctly. I let it sit for 24 hours so I could remove the excess silicone. I then applied silicone to the trim piece and installed it and used painter's tape to keep it tight against the roof. After another 24 hours I removed the tape and cleaned up and excess silicone and check to make sure the trim piece was not loose on any of the sides. After that it was time to put the interior back together. Another tip I read online was to install the grab handles and hanger clips you have to assemble them first by installing the metal clip then plastic cover and then you can snap them into the roof. One issue I had with the pillars was that the white retainers were damaged from removal or from prior installs, they could also be dried out. I bought new ones from NAPA, 12 Trim Panel Retainers 665-5063 (Balkamp) and they worked great. One thing I learned with the retainers were to make sure you had the retainer lined up with the hole first and then press/smack it in place, if it is not lined up you will probably damage it after a few tries. I like having a pulsing brake light and anything helps to get the attention of the drivers that do not pay attention. A friend pointed out to me that the light for the bed is not as bright as the stock light and does not point as far down either, but that did not matter to me. I love the look much better and that it pulses too. If I had any negatives to say it would be to keep the length on the threaded studs the same as the stock light and it would make installing the nuts much easier. Good luck on your install and I hope I am able to help with the install.

Removing the broken light studs was simple with a box end wrench, putting the nuts back on the studs of the new light, I had to use my examination fingers to feel where the studs were. Using a 3/8 short extension with a regular 10mm socket just to start the nuts was a challenge since I was working by myself. Once they were started it was simple with a deep socket and rachet. Looks Awesome dude! Thanks for the tutorial!

Just installed this yesterday, pretty sure my 2016 was leaking water from there even though the dealer said that repair was fixed (wet headliner from heavy rain, water in the back of the cab) Is this new light water tight just from the foam on the back and the tightening of the two bolts? A bit of that foam is sticking out in odd ways but luckily on the bottom side not the top.
I still have the original "cover" and I think its only cosmetic but it does kind of look better with it, so for that I am trying to decide if I should use silicone and basically make a secondary seal for that outter ring, or just use some 3m adhesive to hold it on for cosmetic purposes.
Any help on the right way to re-use that outter bezel?

Thanks for the video. Toyota’s engineers or lack there of, made installing this light way more difficult than it should be. I dropped both the stock nuts taking them off but at least they were easy to get to in the metal track. I agree with the other comments it is hard to get the socket in there to get them off. I wish the third brake light replacement was as easy as the tail lights unfortunately it’s almost worse than the process of dismantling the front end to replace the headlights.

During the uninstall I dropped one nut but was able to retreive it once you take the light out so not a big deal but man it was a pain to put it back! Angle it correctly then finger twist just to secure the nut on and then finished it off with the wrench to the socket.

I love Tacoma Lifestyle and have bought a decent amount of their products. And yes, this brake light looks fantastic when fully installed. But this was not an “easy install.” At least not for me. I did need a second person to hold the liner back.
The instructions in the video are perfectly clear; but it cuts out the most difficult part which is actually gripping the screws with the socket. The OEM light also has longer screws. So installing the new light is a bit difficult. I ended up using some tape to hold the socket onto the nut while searching for the screws. Because when you drop it while trying to find the screw (and I dropped it more than once lol) it’s going to be almost impossible to reach.
I also had to find the perfect balance of pulling back the headliner to reach the screws while also not pulling back too far to have a permanent headliner crease. Luckily there’s no crease after the install.
Ultimately though, fantastic light and completely worth the pain! Just gotta have patience.
Was working on this mod with my dad at the time. We got pretty frustrated and had to take a break, but once the light was fully bolted in there was some serious hype and relief. If you’re looking for a mod to bond with your dad over, this is it lol.

We have tested the seal on the new brake light and are confident in its ability with the adhesive on the product that it'll keep out water (if installed correctly). Adding more weather sealing will only improve your chances of no leaks. There is however a possibility as with any after market part, If you have trouble with leaks feel free to email us at sales@tacomalifestyle and we will help resolve that issue.

Backstory: I wake up at 3am for a 4 day road trip to finish up some laundry. See this video, decide I have at least 1.5 hours to complete. No problem, an hour later the cops show up thinking I’m breaking in. Show them I have my “Tacoma Life” tshirt on and this is my life. They laugh and leave. I now have a 10mm deep socket some where in the frame of my headliner, pissed off neighbours and OEM 3rd brake light still installed. This is not an easy install.

  • @ThatCleanMT

This video is a big fail Tacoma Lifestyle. It’s not “easy” and requires a lot more than you showed in this video. Dropping the headliner is one of those crucial things in order to get good access as well as stop people from creasing their headliner, leading them to believe they can pull it back. This should be pulled down.
For those that want a much better installation video, look up Jessie Rizzo video. Shows you from start to finish as every step in between. This video is just terrible and misleading.
