    A somewhat minor thing really, but I love the way they sneak in resolving the Raz water phobia after the final boss fight. Dan didn't show it off in this vid, but I fully expect it gets shown off in the last 2 - Raz's animation on being "killed" by water changes entirely, and he stops taking damage from it.
    I strongly suspect that the water "hazard" hands Raz has been encountering through both games has actually been his subconscious using latent/undiscovered Hydrokinesis powers.
    It would stand to reason that psychic powers have a tendency to be inherited/run in the family, given the Zanottos' relationship with plants and the Booles' relationship with animals. I bet Raz would grow up to rival his great aunt's prowess with Hydrokinesis.

    Its always been important, in this game, that the character ends up being the one to "finish it". Bob and Compton remove the mask/puppet. Helmut faces his memories and Cassie collects herself. Nona finishing Maligula, and by "cutting her off", fits well.

      This game goes out of its way to preserve the agency of the characters that Raz jumps into, I've noticed. Both through Raz eliciting and receiving explicit consent to enter the mind in the first place (in 99% of cases), alongside the brain's owner themselves taking the final step to fixing the problem (I think Hollis is the sole exception, and she gets a whole scene dedicated to setting Raz straight as compensation).

    I don't remember if I said this in the last video, but considering Raz is directly related to a powerful water psychic and the curse is fake, I'd be really prone to believing that the hands that grab you every time you hit water are a subconcious manifestation of another of Raz's powers. We've seen specific psychic powers be hereditary, and y'know, fear of water drilled into him and all that...
    I legit thought Raz was doing it when the water snakes turned around.

    I feel like Psychonauts 2, as far as videogames go, might actually be the PERFECT sequel. Perfect game? No, it has flaws. But a perfect SEQUEL? Absolutely. Expands perfectly on its own universe while building on the foundation established by its original and also justifying its own existence with a story that fits perfectly into the established facts and setting without invalidating the importance of the original's accomplishments. It improves on some of the original's flaws, while introducing new mechanics and elements the original didn't explore that still fit right in. On top of all of that, it REALLY feels like a labor of love that exists FIRSTLY to be a good story, rather than just a cash in on a well liked property. I 100% agree that, while the original holds a special place in my heart, Psychonauts 2 actually managed to surpass it without lessening the original in any way. Also perhaps the ONLY long awaited game sequel/entry that managed to have a massive hype train and STILL live up to that hype. I can't remember a time where I've ever gotten a long awaited sequel and then NOT been disappointed by it in some way. If there's never another Psychonauts game, it can still rest as a perfect trilogy that pretty much wraps up everything it needed to wrap up.
    I know some people are hoping for more Psychonauts games after this, and others are saying it would be impossible to continue from this point. I think a middleground might actually be the most likely or viable future for the series- Not necessarily a game focused on RAZ, because he seems to have mostly fulfilled his personal character growth arc. But... some kind of mission based game with a larger playable cast (consider the ex-interns, now junior agents, who seem almost pre-built precisely for that purpose, where each of them has a unique specialization suited to specific tasks) that INCLUDES Raz. (Since I know KH examples actually are RELEVANT on this channel, think less KH3 and more 358/2 Days multiplayer style gameplay, but like... a double fine game, so incredibly entertaining instead of being a tragically beautiful trauma conga with grindy gameplay). I feel like Rhombus of Ruin absolutely proves that double fine can adapt to completely different gameplay styles and still retain the heart and soul of Psychonauts, so I bet they could do it if they really wanted to! I just don't feel like Psychonauts 2 NEEDS continuation. But I'm sure they could if they wanted. It should only happen if it's something Tim Schafer and double fine WANT to create, though.

      I'm very much in love with the idea of doing episodic games from the perspective of some of the other characters. There's a wonderful world that they've so painstakingly created, along with some fantastic characters.
      Double Fine has done some really creative shorter games, so I think they'd do a really great job of expanding the lore though more chapter-like games. (But only if they want to.)

    • @zavodila9279
      @zavodila9279 2 года назад +1

      I completely agree that if Double Fine decide to not do anything else with Psychonauts, it can totally rest as being an utterly fantastic trilogy. But I also definitely *want* there to be more Psychonauts, if anything just to see more of this world and its characters. In the first game, it felt like we barely scratched the surface of this grand, bigger world since we were just at a summer camp, and while this game definitely expands upon this universe, it feels like there's so much more to learn and explore. If Double Fine makes a Psychonauts 3, it could be fun to go on full-fledged missions with the other agents and interns like in the Lady Luctopus (which was one of my favorite scenes).

    5:55: No Figment counter. Which means probably no collectables in this mind. Which makes sense; it helps the player stay focused on the story _and_ means the devs don't need to think of a reason why the Maligula part of Lucy/Nona's mind would still be accessible in the postgame.
    10:55: Since Dan didn't find a chance to check, Maligula sees Raz as a protesting louse. A literal insect to be crushed.
    23:45: An important lesson for everyone to learn.
    2:40: It's easy to forget, with all the other stuff going on, but losing Nona with no explanation couldn't have been fun for Razputin's family.

    19:00: The return of Goggalor! Sort of!

    Goodness this has been a wonderful experience - both the game and watching you have so much fun with it. Having recently been burned on a different series that went cash-grab sour it's been such a balm and a delight to see Psychonauts 2 be revived as something that still feels like so much of a passion project for the creators while managing to do so right with everything from the mystery to the twists to the character motivations to the respect and empathy and gravitas and even the representation what that other series did clumsily/ cynically. And also just to watch the design team straight up flex with what they could do in cutscenes/ with the engine, that caviar transition last episode had me say "now you're just showing off" with the biggest smile. It's so clear that Tim Schafer and the Doublefine Team love Psychonauts and cared deeply about telling a story with this game and I adored seeing it.

    Now it’s over I can say: the fact Otto didn’t turn out to be a villain is truely baffling to me. It felt like it was foreshadowed, to the point I wonder if that was changed during development?
    He’s the only Psychic 6 member whose mind we don’t see, he acts super sus in all the post maligula memory vaults, and the Otto-matics mean that if he was locked up post game, you could still shop with no problem.

    • @FronkZappa
      @FronkZappa 2 года назад +8

      I think part of that was to make him a red herring, but mentally I think he's like a more extreme Sasha - he compartmentalizes and has a more materialist view of world and people. He still obviously carries trauma from the past and Maligula, but whereas everyone else either lost someone or their sense of purpose in the psychic 6, Otto seemed to have a single-minded fixation on the Motherlobe and developing his technology and continuing his pursuit of exploring the mind.
      Maybe I'm reading too much into the 60s counterculture references in the game and the real-life psychonauts from around that time, but he seems like the one person in a friend group who experimented hard with psychedelics or other mind-expanding practices and seemed to tolerate it better than the others. You can argue maybe focusing on work was the healthiest coping habit of the six, but at the same time it was likely his aloofness to his friends pain and sadness that helped accelerate them falling apart.

    • @liampoulton-king7479
      @liampoulton-king7479 2 года назад +3

      @@FronkZappa I don’t think it qualifies as a good red herring if you foreshadow something, then just ignore it. It’s not like they had a scene where Raz accuses Otto, and is then proven wrong, the idea of him being the mole, or really anything about him, is basically not brought up.
      It’s also a little weird, cause Bob and Cassie’s Mental projections of Otto are kinda of bad impressions of him, implying he wasn’t that well liked among the group.
      All of your conjecture about Otto feels a little presumptive, because again, we never get to see his mind. Maybe his mind was cut for time or something, but it definitely feels like a loose end that he’s literally the only member of the Psychic 7 whose mind we know nothing about.

    Trenched is the game that started as Iron brigade and Costume Quest is another double fine game thats a really funny, take on a final fantasy rpg and themed like a halloween cartoon special.
    Really been enjoying this psychonauts 2 playthough, its been quite a mindblowing experience. I'll be sure to buy the game as soon as I'm able.

    I didn't get in to psychonauts until like 2014 or 2015? maybe a bit later. It's one of my favorite series ever. I'm so glad that I got the chance to experience it, eventually. :)

    Three games you need to look into: Voodoo Vince, Oddworld Stranger's Wrath, and the Neverhood. All of them share this quirky humor and great storytelling. All of them are worth playing, even if you don't make them into videos.

    21:00 the staging & tone of this scene makes me randomly think of a similar scene in Chicken Run, even if the timing of character movements is definitely not the same.

    A couple of other Double Fine games: The Cave and Stacking. The Cave is 7 people coming to the Cave to try and change their past. Stacking is puzzle solving as the smallest doll of a family of stacking dolls.

    I'm sure by now you know, but since I didn't see in the comments, Darin DePaul voiced Reinhardt in Overwatch, Revenant in Apex Legends, and J. Jonah Jameson in the Spider-Man games, just to name a few roles. He has a magnificent range; super talented. Josh Keaton played Peter Parker in the Spectacular Spider-Man cartoon, but I don't know any of his other voice credits.

    That giant Raz bit was definitely based on the giant Bowser fights from Bowser's Inside Story, with the attacks being punching and fire breath, as well as aim of pushing Maligula back to the pit being the same as some of the fights, where the aim is also to push the enemy back. It's neat to see the idea implemented and modified here, and know that at least one of the devs is a fan of such a good game!

    It's a strange coincidence that you are playing Portal 2 at the same time as this since they seem like sequels of similar qualities. They're both continuations of their respective stories but they are also both sequels that look at the original and say "How can we expand on this?". They also both feel like sequels that the developers wanted to make. Very little feels like a cash in.

    Brutal Legend is 100% my kind of game. It's not for everyone, but every aspect is keyed specifically to my tastes and I love it enough that I still have my old PS3 in a safe spot just so I can play it when I get the itch. Kinda heartbreaking that we won't get to see you enjoy it and share it with more people, but yeah, the soundtrack kinda makes that LP a non-starter (even if said soundtrack is *amazing*)

    During the credits, it shows a bunch of scribbled scenes, showing characters that are connected.
    When Raz is up there, it shows a male character that I don't recognize.
    It could almost be Sasha, but...maybe it's Raz grown up, showing what he becomes when he grows up?

    Is everyone forgetting that we still don’t know who kidnapped Truman? When we encountered the kidnapper in loboto’s mind the voice did seem feminine. And if they hired loboto it makes since that they would hire the mole as well. Also, the kidnapper seems to be familiar with maligula in a way that nick from the mailroom wouldn’t be. There is a lot of potential story-wise for another sequel.
