  • Madison Square Garden 1974 November 28 (Thanksgiving). John Lennon came on stage as special guest at the Elton John concert and they did three songs together. We all know the story ......
When John Lennon was recording his "Walls and Bridges" album in 1974, he invited Elton to help him out on a couple of tracks - "Whatever Gets You Thru the Night" and "Surprise, Surprise (Sweet Bird of Paradox)". This was around the same time they also worked together on Elton's releases "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" and "One Day at a Time". Lennon said of Elton, "I was amazed at his ability. A fine musician, great piano player. I was really pleasantly surprised at the way he could get in on such a loose track and add to it and keep up with the rhythm changes". As Elton and Lennon were enjoying themselves greatly during the recording session, Elton asked Lennon if he would do "Whatever Gets You Thru" with him on stage. Lennon, who no longer performed live, jokingly promised to do so when the song became a #1 hit single. In November that year, it did hit #1, Lennon's only solo single to do so. Elton called him up and reminded him of the promise, and Lennon appeared on stage for three numbers at Elton's 1974 New York City concert at Madison Square Garden. Lennon was terrified, and nearly backed out several times. Finally, as Elton introduced him, he suddenly turned to Bernie Taupin back stage, and said, "I'm not going on unless you go with me". Bernie walked him out to the stage, gave him a light push, and said, "You're on your own". When he came on stage, the audience of 18,000 rose to their feet and applauded for several minutes before they were able to perform the three songs, the final one being the old Beatles' hit "I Saw Her Standing There", which was a song Paul McCartney (not John Lennon!) had sung. It was the first time Lennon sang the song! Elton has said many times that this whole event was one of the high points of his career.

I was one of the lucky ones. My first concert, at the age of 15. I thought they'd all be like that. Unbelievable.
Was at the right place at the right time. Kiki Dee opened, then a video "take me to the pilot" video, then Elton for Funeral for a Friend. John Lennon. Great time. Thanks for the memories.

I was lucky enough to be at this show. Sat in the first row of the blue seats right above the stage. This song, not I Wanna Hold Your Hand, is what got me hooked on the Beatles in '63. To hear John sing this song LIVE is still the greatest concert experience I've ever had. Miss you John!

A scorcher! Rusty as he was live, Lennon still belts this out. The reason for his appearance was that Elton bet him that Whatever Gets You Through The Night would be a number one in the US. Lennon didn't think it would be, and this was the forfeit - to appear live on stage with Elton. Well done Elton, you ought to have had a few more bets with Lennon ..... a fantastic night, shame there were only three numbers - I bet the crowd wished they would have gone on for another two hours .....

The Beatles really went on with their careers that they never played their older songs ever again after recording it like bands do nowadays so it seems like they forgot about it. Its nice to hear John perform this song 10-11 years after recording and doing it live with The Beatles.

Whatever could you mean? He did primal scream therapy to understand himself more, which led to the groundbreaking plastic Ono band record, which Wasn't commercial and wasn't intended to be, but had tremendous influence and effect on other musical artists (more so than any other of the solo albums). Then he took 5 years off to look after Sean, whilst Yoko pursued the avant-garde career. That's literally the opposite of what you said - that is calming down, being sensible supporting your wife - Very unusual, especially back then,, when things were more male dominated and the distortions of modern feminism had not taken hold yet.
This is thhe most stable he ever was!Remember John was never in music for commercial success, he was in it for originality, catharsis and social commentary - that's all! That is why he is the greatest songwriter ever - Because only ever produce high quality art - nothing purely commercial or The Shallow or sentimentally throwaway

In a sense, we could say that if words have a meaning this means he really loved Paul a s a true friend as well as Paul loved John as he has been showing all these years...moreover around 74-75 they were close to be again together in studio...the point is that they weren't far from their breakup and John was always used to joke to protect his inner feelings...if he was still alive, who knows?
