Welcome to the story of Our Italian Dream House.
We sold our apartment in Stockholm, packed up the car and headed for Piedmont in Italy. After a couple of months searching for the right house we came across Our Italian Dream House and immediately made an offer. Four weeks later (just three days before Christmas) we signed the contract and had the keys.
It's now early 2023 and work on this epic renovation is underway. We are mortgage free and have a very limited budget so plan to take on as much of the renovation ourselves as possible - follow us on our journey as we turn an abandoned Italian farmhouse in Piemonte into our dream home.
In this episode we renovate our chicken coop into a terrace for under €1000. Carrying out the works ourselves and sourcing the patio furniture from IKEA, really allowed us to complete this project on a tight budget!

Thank you Cory! We actually have a large sailcloth which we used last year for the terrace and were hoping to try out for this patio. Since Edward is a professional sailor it makes him feel right at home 😉

Wow that's some view! Retractable awnings are popular here in Florida, mine had a little sensor so if it got too windy it would close by itself.... Enjoy!

Lovely! Just a quick note of caution-- the building NEXT to the coop looks like it could have an asbestos roof-- be careful if you plan to work on that (or get the all-clear from an inspector if you haven't already).

I watch many European renovation RUclips videos. Recently on "It's a Wonderful Life" (a French farmhouse) Peter did a wonderful pergola which might be helpful in building your terrace cover. It is 3 parts where the 3rd part breaks down the price of the project. Your view is spectacular so it will get used frequently.

Thanks Carolyn. It really was a hidden treasure underneath that old rusty roof and behind all the overgrown bushes and trees! Sometimes the best surprises come when you least expect them. So glad to hear that you made it back to Italy. We've also had a lot of rain here in the last week, sounds like the whole of Mediterranean Europe is a bit wet at the moment. Heads up on the lemon tree some need a second plant to pollinate or you might not get lemons more than once if just bought (unless you have lemon trees near by) beautiful build :)

We're so lucky with our view. I usually dont like to use "lucky", but this time we were lucky - it was hidden behind big trees so we actually had no idea about it when we bought the house, haha.
In spring we will take down most of the trees in front of the garden to clear up the land and the view even more!

Beautiful view. Nice that you left part of the wall, be sure is safe that nobody leaning on it might fall. Why you didn't take down the vine climbming on the neighbors roof? At least let them know, that will ruin their property roof.
Hi Zusa, thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment. Definitely, the wall will be getting some extra attention to re-enforce it before anyone has the chance to lean on it. The neighbours are aware of the climbing tree, they are happy to leave it since it provides their chicken coop with some shade which is on their side of the boundary.

Thanks Thomas! Haha. love that. It's a warm sallad with green lentils, red onion, black olives, feta cheese, ruccola and fresh mint. Topped with grilled zucchini, a savoury nut & seed mix and an orange and dijon vinaigrette 😊
I like your channel but you miss so many opportunities to show the work! I like seeing what you do and what your plans are for the future. Seeing professionals do the work is less enjoyable. The outdoor patio was a surprise and it's a missed opportunity to show the work over time. Hope you get into a more regular schedule and film as you go. It's a beautiful property.
Thank you so much Vince. We totally agree with you and we will try to be better. Keep in mind that creating these videos takes hoooours of editing and often we don’t have the time to set up and film properly because it needs a proper storyline to make it make sense. Our RUclips is a side project from our normal jobs and renovating so unfortunately it’s what’s first get to suffer when we have a lot on our hands ☺️

Oh well, we can’t help that if afraid.
All we have heard about mortgages here is that it’s pretty much impossible for non-residents to get one with an Italian bank. So the way we have heard about people doing it is to re-mortgage a property abroad. For Swiss people there are some special banks as well. But that’s about it.
