The Closing of a Concrete Grave Liner

  • A Concrete Grave Liner is the minumum burial container required in most Cemeteries in Central Illinois and Indiana. This container is not a lined or sealed Burial Vault, it is a concrete liner that prevents the soil above the casket from settling over time as the casket deteriorates.
Most cemeteries require a burial vault or grave container to prevent continually adding soil and seeding of each grave plot.
A Burial vault serves the same purpose as a Grave Liner but a Vault contains an interior liner, and a butyl adhesive seal that prevent water and soil from entering the vault, but does not prevent the casket from deteriorating.
A Lawn Crypt is also another form of Grave liner, lawn crypts are also commonly double depth, which means two family members may be interred into one Grave plot, separated by a concrete shelf between the two caskets.
At Kelley Burial Vault Company, we treat every family with the same respect and care at the graveside. The Concrete Grave Liner is the most cost effective way to lay a loved one to rest, but the container is still suspended above the grave and displayed in a way that the container may be closed and lowered above ground in view of the family. It is our opinion that lowering a grave liner or Burial Vault base into the grave and leaving the lid or cover to the side is less respectful than to display the vault over the grave.

We buried my brother yesterday, the funeral director asked me to leave so they could inter him. I told no, I wanted to see what they actually did. Are you sure they asked and I said yes. I told them I watch interments daily on RUclips. It was eye opening experience. Thank you for all that you do for the families.

Dad is in a memorial wall at a Veteran Memorial cemetery, Moms ashes are in a plot next to my Grandmother and my ashes will be more to the foot of the same plot. Our Stone just waits for my dates. My Son can then decide the remainder of the 6 plots.

I keep waiting for an instance where the two steel cables get stuck underneath the vault. The following in my mind would be some kind of Halloween related incident, that would be required to get the cable unstuck…
As for this vault. I really relate to this vault, because it has a rustic, basic, yet strong look to it. There’s a wonderful discoloration on the sides, which are just part of the construction process. This vault would be absolutely 100% acceptable to me , because if I was to be entered, I would not feel that this is excessive expenditure in order to meet the guidelines, in place by many cemeteries. They require a vault so it’s not to have cave ins, Has stated numerous times by this wonderful vault manufacture & installation gentlemen.

Very professional work... but so different from our burials. We use highly decomposable casket materials, we use no vaults and the next burial in the same grave can be done after 25 years. Casket is carried by 6 persons and lowered into the grave, a temporary cover is placed upon grave to carry the flowers after individual farewells. Grave is filled with dirt and it will settle until casket has collapsed and deteriorated. Casket materials are also to be eco friendly and safe for the cremation.

Yes U.S. is the only country that does burial vaults. Yes multiple people can be buried in one grave. Like one on top of another like parents. Or have cremations with the body inside or outside the casket. But to reuse the grave for someone else or especially a non-family member. Would be scandelist and would be a huge outcry if this was done in the U.S. In the U.S you buy a grave and you own it forever. We don't rent graves.

I would think they would place the casket on top of the lid and then place the vault inverted downwards atop the casket before sealing the vault against the lid that the casket would sit atop. In other words - invert the vault.
The advantage of doing it that way would be significantly greater ground water resistance because the ambient air trapped in the vault would equal the pressure of any water that tried to come up from below.
As an example, take a clear plastic cup into a swimming pool. Hold it out of the water, invert it (rim down), and maintain that orientation as you then submerge the cup. Notice how the air pocket in the cup remains. Exact same concept - you would be manipulating basic hydrostatics to keep the ground water out of the vault and casket.
