Do you have any tips for decluttering sentimental items?

Take a picture before you donate it to someone who will find value in it:)

Keep only the best stuff in the same box to set a limit.
Create memories, not things to collect.
Keep only one thing to remember an important moment, don't keep a bouquet, keep only one dried flower.
      Donate what you can.

I had lots of letters from friends over the course of 30 years. I did not want to keep them but couldn't stand the thought of them rotting in a landfill. So one night I set up my fire pit and read each letter before putting them in the flames. It felt like paying final homage to them before moving the letters out of my life.

There's a charity that would love to have old art, especially primary school stuff, old homework assignments, ledgers, books (even damaged), the name is the Disabled Artists Foundation, inc. They send it all to disabled artists, that can't afford supplies, to create journals and recycle art.

I loved this question. I am an artist with childhood art and a minimalist. Quick answer Andrea, is take pics of everything and store it in a folder on your phone or laptop and donate the actual art. Just trust that there are people who will be attracted to it and buy it. Art at my Goodwill sells like crazy. Now a little more on the subject. There may be a time in your life that you will regret getting rid of it. The pics will help in that situation. Getting rid of the actual art will free you and allow space for new things to come into your life. Lastly the folder of pics give you time to decide what you would like to do long term. I find decluttering happens in layers for me. Good show everybody!!!😍

I recommend also backing it all up on an external hard drive. I wouldn't trust my phone for longterm storage nor my laptop.

I love the idea of reencountering with the memory. Taking a picture is definitely a good idea to say goodbye to things !!

That was DYNAMITE ! Yaaaas ! As an “information junkie” who loves the arts, words, correspondence, songs ...and who creates... um ... I still don’t want to live in a museum, eh ? Potent reminders here. I do have to pat myself on the back for having purged old letters & what-not, & better organized / simplified projects. But I can definitely make another pass & peel off another layer of the onion. Thanks, Gentlemen !! So insightful and delightful as always ! Liz

Give them to someone in the family so you can see them when you're visiting and gradually understand that they're not so important and let go.
We often tend to think that things from our past are valuable because we had them when we were younger but I think that's only a fantasy!
Thanks for the Hemingway story! He was so poor in Paris that he was actually walking around the Jardin du Luxembourg hoping to catch a pigeon to have something to eat...

Thank you for this video. 🙏🏻 As a Minimalist myself, I've done something similar when decluttering.
I have three children. Now, they're all adults and I picked through some of their things that they forgot about and placed in a shoe box. Each one has their own shoebox of memories, much like a time capsule. When I pass on they will not have to declutter because I've already given them the special memories. At least I could rest in peace knowing my kids won't have to rummage through my things and have the the task of "death cleaning" Letting go will be easier for them as well.

The best advice I ever heard about decluttering sentimental items comes from Matt Paxton: What your posterity is interested in is the stories you have to tell, not the objects you've accumulated. So make a video of yourself holding your most treasured items and explaining their significance to you. If you ask your heirs, chances are they will tell you that they would treasure these stories more than they would ever treasure your porcelain doll collection or woodworking tools.

We done a major declutter when my daughter was at home,(all motivated by you guys!) we started with clothes & worked our way through and outrageous number of books keeping only ones that we would read again or that were extra special - allowing ourselves to have 2 shelves worth of books each on our bookcase. we sold all our vinyl & a ton of CD's & gave masses of clothes, ornaments & stuff to charity stores....eventually when we came to sentimental items & we created a memory box each of little precious things, first teddy bear, piece of grandmas jewellery, favourite whisky glass from my late father, little troll from my childhood, one small writing journal from my first school days 1964 !! - we've both taken away & added to our memory boxes over the past few years letting somethings go or using them eg the whisky glass!! & we sometimes replace them with new memories, but we keep the rule of never buying a bigger box, keep it small & only things that are super special - I have the tiny jacket she wore when i brought her home from hospital when she was born. This whole experience made moving house an absolutely stressless experience as we were both downsizing to smaller apartments a year later. When occasionally i get a bit 'cluttery' I don't have my daughter to keep me in check but i do have you guys, I put on a few your podcasts & i'm back in the 'less is more' groove, love you guys - can't thank you enough for your inspiration over the years, as I'm getting older & not as physically fit as i used to be & live in a great deal of pain, your example has given me much more than i ever could have imagined because maintaining all that stuff was literally painfully unmanageable. Keep doing what you're doing, much love guys xxx

I just recently had decluttered some art work, which was 2 colorful afghans and both so equally balanced in hues and tones. I gave them to two persons I’ve known for some time and who would appreciate them. Yet as I gave those afghans, I’ve thought that I can always make more.

I personally am in the process of going through my art supplies. There are so many (among a variety of other clutter) that its keeping me from creating art. So similarly to this I would think it would be very good to secluded old works of art to make room for new works of art in you life 🥰

I can let go of the past; but it's hard to let go of the immense box of potential aspirations filling my future.
I'll have to live a thousand years to do all the things I plan on doing in that perfect future that never seems to arrive.

I agree with The Minimalist, taking a picture of the memory..there is only one thing I would not get rid off: cards with messages. Nothing lifts my day, my life such as a card from a friend, sister, son, co-worker, with thoughtful meaning words. I read them when i need to. The touch of a paper, card, texture of the colors if Crayolas were used. This does not include Birthday, Holiday cards. As these are different types of cards.

As a professional artist, I might add for any other emerging artists...please keep the GREAT pieces! show them to friends and strangers to see their opinion on if it's a great piece, because I've had collectors ask for some that only exist as a crapy photo. 🙏❤👍☕

I am going through several things of pictures and what I'm doing is there going to be digitized and whoever the main character is in that picture will get the original along with a copy of the CD of all the pictures
That way if there's a picture they didn't get and they want it they can print it up themselves

    ♥️🌹ARTWORK SOLUTION:
DIGNIFY IT & HER CHILDHOOD MEMORIES BY FRAMING IT or a PHOTOGRAPH OF IT, IN A BIG BLACK FRAME, w/A WHITE MATTE, bevel in silver, gold, or black.
    She’s dignifying & embracing her
    inner-childhood… she’ll be grateful & appreciate it later.♥️🌹

What I did when my daughter was growing up, was at the end of each school year I gleaned the most memorable items (art work, school work, dance recital programs, etc. into one file folder and tossed the rest. I have one single file box where I keep things like my last 7 years taxes, car titles, etc., and the school folders take up less than half of it. It’s not ultimately minimal but one box for paper items works for be.
