We actually know what happened to Nana's husband. We found out about it right after the AFO Vs All might fight when All might was in the hospital. Episode 50 in season 3, End of the beginning, beginning of the end. Gran Torino explained that Nana's husband was killed (likely by AFO but it's not specifically stated) and she shortly after chose to put her son in foster care so he wouldn't be a target as well. She made all might and Gran Torino promise to never interact with him to prevent him from being targeted. So for her son Kotaro, his dad had just died and then his mom gave him up to be a hero instead.

3:00 Spinner's motivation being considered selfish in the anime is funny because the manga developed it more. There was an entire chapter that was cut from the anime (chapter 220) that dived a bit more into MHA's version of racism with people with mutation quirks like him being discriminated and how he actually follows Shigaraki because he finds the whole "feeling empty inside and like there's no point for anything" relatable since he faced the worst from the world as well.
actually he had little more bits of character spread throughout the arc but the anime almost cut it all for some reason

Sadly Kotaro didn’t deal with his trauma before he had his own family. That spilled over into how he treated his own family. He tried too hard to build the ideal family to make up for losing his own, but failed to realize in trying to make them conform to his ideal of what a family should be he suffocated and hurt them. In the end it lead to his son growing up without his family the same way he did as well.

A line that was cut out of the anime from the manga was him saying he wanted to be a happy family,he realized what he has done and tried to fix it but...it was already to late.Another thing people should realize is that..its not only dad while he was the biggest problem it was also his family that screwed shugraki over wether its blaming,or just standing there not helping

I can't help but feel that night was such a tragedy in action. Had Tenko's quirk not activated, his entire life would've likely turned out vastly different. All of the family came looking for Tenko because they each wanted to apologize to him. Even his father had realized he was destroying the happy family he wanted because of his own trauma and was likely going to work to change. There's enough to suggest that was his first time actually raising a hand against his son and Tenko's mom immediately wouldn't stand for it anymore. It was one thing to punish him with no dinner, but beating him was the tipping point. (I'm NOT condoning his actions, if your children are scared of you or your punishments are making them scratch from stress, you're definitely in the wrong, but I don't get the people who think he deserved to die for it. The situation at the Shimura household, while messed up, had most likely only been going on for a few months to a maximum of a year. Tenko being only 5 makes it highly unlikely he'd known about heroes (since they don't talk about heroes at home) or wanted to be one before he went to kindergarten at the age of 4. And we saw the level his mom was willing to put up with meaning his father had probably not crossed that line until that day. It was the lowest point for their family, unfortunately, none of them got to grow from it and try to make it up to Tenko and Tenko was picked up by someone who wanted to turn his pain and anger into a knife, not help him heal.)
I also personally have a different take on his dad's reaction to Tenko's awakened power. As someone who also studied psychology, it really comes across to me as an automatic 'fight' reaction to a terrifying situation (as in a fight-or-flight response which you'd have no control over in the moment). He was scared for his life and hit away the immediate danger. The very next thing he did though was try to reach out to his son and call his name. As someone who would've grown up alone in the foster system, it doesn't surprise me that his automatic reaction to a life-or-death situation would be to fight to survive. But I think his second reaction is more meaningful because it's not the automatic reaction but a chosen one. He tried to reach out and calm down his son. Unfortunately, it was too late by then. His anger at heroes that he took out on his son previously had already been too much and Tenko now had a power that allowed him to kill. As a child who wouldn't think much about the consequences of his actions, of course he would use it to kill his dad in that situation.
Which brings it all back to a tragedy. Had Tenko not awakened a quirk that night, his family would've come and apologized to him and his dad would've probably worked to make changes on his end (personally would've liked to see him go to therapy, but knowing even only a little of the Japanese mental health system, it's not surprising that he hadn't.) Anyway, this episode only showcased the sadness of the Shimura family, but it's not what actually made Tenko a villain, and that's the true tragedy.

If you think about, Tenko and Izuku actually have a lot in common. In their youth, they both idolized heroes and wanted to be ones themselves when they grew up. They even had personal heroes they idolized above all; Izuku had All Might, and Tenko had his grandmother, Nana. However, they were repeatedly beaten down and told they could not become heroes: for Izuku, it was by Bakugo; and for Tenko, it was his own father (for Izuku though, his own mother told him he could never become a hero). The only real difference between them (aside from Tenko developing his own Quirk while Izuku ended up Quirknless) is who found them when they were at their absolute lowest. Izuku was found by All Might and would be chosen to become the successor and next wielder of One For All, which led him down the path of becoming the hero named Deku. Tenko, however, was found by All For One and groomed to hate and destroy, sending him down the path of evil to become the villain named Tomura Shigiraki. Their roles could have easily been reversed; if All Might had found Tenko, and All For One found Deku... but even more tragic, the two could have easily become friends if things were different.

I don’t, I can’t, blame Shigarki for what happened in his childhood his work activation killed him dog not by choice he was in a fit of shock when he killed his sister. He was out of control from a mix of rage, fear, sadness and confusion when he killed his mother and grandparents. His dad in the end would have probably killed him and honestly deserved his death after his response was to try to kill his out of control son

This is the darkest episode in MHA. So let’s get into this character analysis. It’s the puppy puddle episode! Would you prefer I say people parts? It still fits.
Trumpet: This guy’s quirk is really sweet for politicians. But…it feels like the most dangerous kind of quirk. Even if it is pure support. It just makes my skin crawl seeing those people get incited to attack the league like that. And then he just plainly puts himself above Spinner. Which drives me nuts….they were not subtle with him and I won’t clarify.
Spinner: This poor guy has an honest Yamcha problem. (He literally planted on the ground in the EXACT crater crawl Yamcha was in.) He wants to be relevant, he wants the attention, he wants to see what world is created for him to better thrive. But no matter where he turns, he just gets knocked around. And if he met Stain, even Stain I’m betting wouldn’t be too keen on his approach either. So it makes his relationship with the league SO much more understandable. He truly has no way forward without the league. Shigaraki accepted him. And now he has a bond with him over video games. Which is so sad to be so desperate for acceptance that you cling onto a sadist’s shared video game interest and let it take you to places you never would’ve gone simply because no one else would take you. It’s only one dedicated scene, but you get some SERIOUS incite into Spinner here.
Redestro: Not going to lie, this is easily the most powerful emotion quirk. There’s ones like love, shame, and others. But stress being power. That is just an excellent yet sad quirk. It doesn’t take much to build, it’s hard to get rid of, and when you spiral it just comes in such fast waves. Regardless how happy and optimistic you are. And to be a leader of an army and trying to live to your family’s reputation for over 100,000 people. No wonder this guy is so ridiculously strong. It’s not just the perfect fit, but there’s no way for him NOT to be powerful. Plus it doesn’t just boost his strength, but his size with no speed drop for that growth and he can conjure his stress into long range attacks too. And he’s even more immune to Shigaraki’s decay more than ANYONE else he has fought other than Snatch the sand hero. But Dabi and Compress killed him in less than a minute in season 4.
And then there he is. Shigaraki aka Tenko Shimura: This man. Having the WORST mutation circumstances ever. Never turning back to any semblance of love his family gave him because they refused to be there for him when he truly needed him. And what was the catalyst? His dad freaking pushed his trauma onto the ENTIRE family. Berated them for mentioning it, locked him out of the house, and although that was only the start of the beating, it never would have improved. The dad had no parental instinct. And with the blind hatred…I won’t deny it. That’s worse than the Todoroki’s. Even the grandparents were on the down low manipulative, telling him to stop crying so they don’t cry while HE is being abused. He was just there. And didn’t get the attention he needed. Even if there were freckles of it. Like his friends letting him be All-Might, his sister being marginally caring at times, his mother caring for him in EVERY WAY BUT the abuse. Had he lived there into his teens, imagine how toxic that environment would get. It would’ve just going further. And poor Nana having no choice but to fight AFO because LITERALLY no other quirk can stand against him. The father was a spiteful asshole willing to tear apart not just his mother’s good memories but EVERYTHING she stood for. What a freak trauma or no. His resolve of going too far was VERY weak.
Let’s talk about the newest upgrade in power last. Now it’s merely a 2 finger touch trigger in his fight with Redestro and he’s gaining the bigger decay moves as time goes. I spoke of the Medusa effect from his hands. But now that we saw the puppy puddle, it’s time to say what the anime has been doing. It is not just censoring from us the viewers. But Shigaraki himself. In season 1 his decay tore off flesh like tree bark against Aizawa. That is happening EVERY TIME. Just the larger amplifications get so bloody and disgusting he has to keep blotting it out. And that’s made clear by the family slaughter. It shows the Medusa effect, but then you see the puddle of blood and people pieces. And he blows people away like the wind. There isn’t a single person on earth I can think of that their brain wouldn’t try EVERYTHING it could to blot out such a horror in real life. Even a sadist like Shigaraki. His brain is nearly fully developed if not already fully. And his brain is STILL screaming this is too much. When he used the high amplification on that group of dozens of people in the Toga episode, he immediately vomited. And knowing he remembers now means he can take it even further.
Also to make it clear for Endeavor vs the Shimura father. Endeavor was the cause of everything with his emotional habits. Shoto’s mother and siblings had no factor in adding to the toxic environment as his mom actually addressed the abuse many times and protected Shoto. And STILL was emotionally available to what he was most vulnerable to. Being a hero does not make you your father. She was driven mad yes. But it was all Endeavor never letting himself be vulnerable. Covering fear and sadness with anger. And once his emotions were dragged out from under him, was when he knew he needed to atone. And he never blamed his family for the environment. And at the VERY least, Shoto did get assets like great battle instinct and he still made his own personal choice to become a hero anyway. The father of Tenko didn’t just make a toxic environment, but he blamed it all on others up until that single hesitation which vanished INSTANTLY. Pushing his past onto everyone and punishing those that considered doing what he disliked. And it kept escalating. It was never going to get better. And no one defending him when he needed defense was just WAY worse. And his explosion wasn’t about playing hero, but SEEING A PICTURE. And it IMMEDIATELY turned into beating him. There was no rhyme or reason even to those that knew the trauma he endured. Saying she made me suffer and you knowing of her existence equates to you suffering is just not something that can ever even be GLEAMED for positive attributes.

To be fair to Kotaro if I had a kid and that kid killed my entire family even acidentally I probably would not be to happy about that. And Kotaro showed remorse and regrett after hitting Tenko so he was just trying to be as good as possible but sadly he had to much baggage.

So let's see if I got this straight..... you just appreciated and cheered on the graphic brutal murder and unspeakably painful death of a man who just saw his entire family reduced to bloody meat chunks and was reasonably terrified out of his mind..... all just because he momentary slapped his son on one occasion out of a sense of pain brought onto him by the abandonment of his own mother and overzealous need to keep his loved ones, that included said boy safe.
And you just delighted in his graphic murder in retaliation for the sin of committing a minor slap born out of the trauma of fear and anguish.
If you don't understand how that is A. very disproportionate of a reaction for you to have and B. how this makes you a horrible person, than I don't know what to say.

Except in the manga, this isn't the first time he hit Tenko. In the manga, it was implied it happened multiple times in the past. Not to mention, locking your child outside when he has severe allergies ? Not allow him to go back inside when it's dinner time ? Punish him for simply wanting to be a hero, which is something many kids want, without telling him why he can't be one ? Yeah he doesn't deserve to die, and he should've gotten therapy or some form of help for his trauma before he started his family, but you sure as hell won't catch me feeling bad for him either. Abuse is abuse, intentionally or not. Kotaro's trauma make him sympathetic and understandable, not excusable.
And he wasn't the only one going through a traumatic event either. Tenko arguably has it worse in that moment since he actually witness his family fall apart, not just the aftermath, and he was a *child*. Also, he was under the impression that what's happening wasn't his fault at first, so how would you feel if you went through immense trauma at a young age and while you're still trying to understand what the heck happened, your father, who you think hates you, hit you with a shovel and tell you to stop, implying what happened is your fault ? I'll go batshit too. Plus, his father crumbled pretty fast, so I'm pretty sure he barely even have time to feel the pain before he died :\
And one final thing, this is an *anime*. You're watching this through Tenko's perspective and he's an unreliable narrator. Of course Amber is gonna cheer when Tenko is happy. Why are you calling her horrible when she's only feeling what the story wants her to feel ? And she didn't even do that, she seems pretty uncomfortable to have to find an appropriate reaction actually.
