Actually, running in Portugues is “correr” (I thought you might want to know), and the word “cosa” does not exist in Portugues. It means “thing” in Spanish, but I cannot imagine why they would have shouted it to cheer you on.
Placebo's cover of Running Up That Hill is superb. Probably better than Ms Bush's original. I don't listen to music when I'm running though unless I'm on the treadmill and even then it's instrumentals, mostly. Kate Bush described the song as the inability between men & women to understand each other as we are men & women. If we were to truly trade places for a time, we'd all be very surprised and it would lead to a greater understanding. And the only way to truly switch roles would be to make a deal; but rather than deal with the Devil, why not God, as God is the more powerful between the two (Radio 1 interview w/ Richard Skinner 26/01/1992). I'm 5'5" myself, as are Meb & Shalane Flanagan (short runners unite!). Loved the cheekiness of this video btw.
I lost about 170 lbs and then started running (a lot) just because I could and absolutely love it!!! (And the running channel) But it infuriates me to no end that my friends, family, and just people in general think I lost the weight running. Seriously?!?! All that hard work!! What short memories people have! OMG! Yes, running helps but by no means is it the weight loss magic pill! It’s the 100’s of everyday little things you do, what you eat, and regular exercise. Also, while I’m venting, No, I cannot “just run it off” when people offer me cookies, cake, or donuts. If I say no, I mean no!!! If I wanted a donut I’d eat the donut! What if I just really want a banana today?? That’s another thing, Why is everyone trying to feed me because I run???? Someone answer me that. Okay, rant over, I feel better. 😂
This is awesome because it's true. Had a similar situation, lost about 60lbs and then started running. Got bombarded with questions about running and weight loss. Thank you Maria.
I agree. When I started running I was about 25kg overweight, but I didn't start running as a way to loose weight, and I didn't really loose much weight in the first few months as I didn't adapt my diet initially. I then started eating a lot "cleaner" and have lost 12kg in 3 months. What I did notice is that my body has become really lean, especially my legs (even though I'm still more than 10kg overweight). So no, running doesn't make you loose weight, but it helps changing the way your body looks.
I second that DBos. In my opinion, in the US the only people who have a clue about the metric system are Runners (Track, Cross Country, or road races), and people who have traveled alot.
Regarding protein: Recent studies have disproven the idea of an "anabolic window" (i.e. that taking protein within 30 minutes of exercise is more beneficial than taking it any other time). The research seems to suggest that it's just as effective, so long as it's the first thing you consume after exercising, whether that's 5 minutes, or 3 hours.
So great to see Andy on The Running Channel. I hope you become a regular contributor and content creator with the rest of the team. You're a great, and warm personality. Subbed.
I'd love to get to know you guys. Now you have a higher following it woukd be great to do a video about your running journeys. How you started etc. Love your channel!
No matter how many times i watch this, Andy's answer to 'are runners good in bed?' cracks me up every time especially - I tried my whole career to get quicker!
Regarding weight loss, I’ve heard some people say running is not good for it. However, through running and a sensible diet, I’ve lost over 30 pounds so far.
I agree. If your diet is on point, cardio is a great way to accelerate weight loss. This is especially true if your weight loss has stalled. I've lost 40 lbs this year through diet, cardio, and body weight strength training.
For the question, “Are runners athletes?” let me share an experience that I had a few years ago. I have a low resting heart rate (it’s usually in the low 40’s) which I attribute to my active lifestyle that includes my love of running. There was a blood drive in town so I went to donate and while I was there the nurse went through the standard questions and tests with me that included checking my blood pressure and heart rate. When the nurse saw how low my heart rate was she asked me if I was an athlete and explained that they normally don’t accept donations from people with a resting heart rate below 50bpm. I laughed at the question and said no (after all I’ve never considered myself an athlete). The nurse then asked me how active I was so I listed off the things I had done during the week which included four runs since the Monday and it was only Friday. Without another word the nurse wrote in big letters on my paperwork, “ATHLETE.” It was the first time I have been labeled an athlete so I jokingly asked her if I could get a photocopy of the paper so I could hang it on my wall. It was a no go for the photocopy but I was able to donate blood and the memory of my experience still makes me smile. (By the way, I live in Ontario, Canada so maybe this athlete thing is a Canadian thing.)
Great fun video 👍 Would be great to have a video from you guys about strengthening the IT band muscle. I recently did an ultra marathon and struck by left leg IT band.. so I completed the race walking & jogging 👎

I have to disagree with your last bit. "At any size." Really? There's only so many pluses you can add to your size before you absolutely *cannot* be a fit runner. XL or 2XL? Sure. 9XL? That's when running actually *will* destroy your knees (and probably other parts as well) because your body simply can't handle that much mass pitted against the high-impact nature of the sport. And I say this as a plus size woman with an obese mom. I'm on my way down, and running is fine for me, but if my mom wanted to try running, she'd destroy what little is left of her mobility in about two minutes.
In Portuguese: the run = a corrida; to run = correr; "run! run!" = corre! corre! Most ppl motivating you during a run will say "força! força!" which means "strength! strength" as in "be strong!". Enjoy your runs everyone!

If anyone cares, 'Running Up That Hill' is about a woman's desire to switch bodies/roles with a man so they can understand each other fully. That and hill reps.
@@runningchannel I'm a missionary and help indigenous families out here. I live in Lima the capital of Peru, but am here nearly every month as we divide our time between the 2 areas. Hot and humid and hard running here in the jungle!
I guess we all have our pressing questions about running. Runners are so vastly different in so many ways but in my personal experience I have found all runners, regardless of ability, to be kind and supportive of each other. Something our world desperately needs. Cheers!
This has made me go and check my running playlist to see if I've actually got any songs about running on it. Answer: just one song: "Run" by Gossamer (…and no Kate Bush)
@@runningchannel oh! that makes sense now. the persons I know from Açores are all runners or some track and field athletes, and most of the ones that go there is for ultras. Did you see the European cross country in Lisbon some days ago? some of my team mates were running there
"Is running bad for your knees?" Does this not depend on your running style? I certainly think that running with a heel-strike is bad for your knees. Running with a midfoot-strike is definitely not. I have a question for you. I've been running in Vibrams since I decided to transition to midfoot striking last year. I had an AT injury which put me off running for a few months then started again in May. I can easily run 6k indoors (on hard tiles, barefoot), but I cannot run more than 3k outdoors (in my Vibrams on pavement and road) without getting calf injuries. I have decided to buy the Altra One V3 (Zero-drop, moderate cushioning). I'm hoping to receive them today. My question is: will the bit of cushioning solve my calf problems or should I rather revert to walk run intervals until my calves are stronger?
Sounds like you need to watch our video Luke ruclips.net/video/jUG3mAdrIUU/видео.html With regards to barefoot / minimalist shoes, it can take months or even years to adjust to it. Everyone is different, so it’s hard to put a timescale on it
It depends on the context. When being used in this sentence "Why is he running?" it's a verb. When used in this sentence "One great form of exercise is running." it is a gerund.
It is that too. And no coincidence. His first was ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’ - so Running-themed song titles to his books! You should check out the video we did with him on running books (Anna) ruclips.net/video/ru5DzdyzEHU/видео.html
Teacher here. -ing forms are never verbs. They can either be gerunds (nouns) or participles (sort of adjectives but with a different syntactical function) or pretty normal adjectives. e.g. Running is fun. (gerund, i.e. noun) I am out running, having fun. (participle clause) He called me while I was running. (participle used to form the past progressive. ) You need to close all running programmes before switching off the computer. (participle used as a normal adjective)
In french, « running » is the snob way to say « course à pieds ». People prefer saying « Je fais du running. » than « Je fais de la course à pieds ». The « runner » and « le coureur » are doing the exact same thing on the road, but the runner shares it on social medias !
Kyle Kranz, your pooping coach, says no. 1 after waking, then a 1.2 km out-and-back will probably guarantee a no. 2 movement and then the training run comes after. Before races, he wakes up early with the same routine, except a mile warm-up instead of a training run, will have pooped twice before a race and quite confident not to have an unscheduled: ruclips.net/video/ABZ82G-Y7dY/видео.html
Great video! A question I have is about something that has always been a problem for me which is...blisters!! I get blisters on the insides of both of my feet when running! I've tried different shoes, insoles and socks...nothing has worked...do you have any advice on how to help this problem? Thanks! Keep up the great work!
Running Jacket advice? I have just started C25K, on week 2. Obviously the programme will go through Jan and Feb and I am getting pretty cold and wet so was thinking of asking for a running jacket for Christmas. Our budget is small. Under £30 would be ideal. There is lots out there but I don't know what to get that's good. I've been looking at Karrimor fleece hoody, XAED running jersey, Sundried winter hooded jacket, Asics women running jacket. They vary quite a bit on price and I can't always find reviews. Anyone have any suggestions?
I’m sure The Running Channel have done a “what to wear in winter” video with Anna putting on dozens of tops although it may have been about “types” of runners. If you’ve got a Decathlon near you, they do cheap/good clothing and worth a look.
Natasha’s Natter what @Narrowboat Longpod said - start with Decathlon if there’s one nearby. If you can extend it to £40 you might be able to pick up something in the December/January sales. Just make sure the hood fits well! Especially for those rainy days.
I do have a question, for you and anyone else with any experience of it. During trail running, is it common to run into wild animals? And how do you deal with it?
I have 2 questions. How many people have you scared while running past them? & have you been bitten by a dog ? For me it's many & 6-7 times for the dog over time. Love this channel 👍👍
This comment is straight to Anna and anyone else who, like me, goes straight to look for that Futureheads song. I went on a goosechase so I’ll save you time! The Kate Bush song they covered wasn’t Running Up That Hill, but the very similar Hounds of Love - and it is a banger. Both versions. Much better cadence for running than Running Up That Hill!
Running is the present progressive conjugation of the verb to run. 'So I am running' is definitely a verb. 'The running person' would be an adjective. 'I went for a run' would be a noun.
Runners know what discipline, pacing and how to cope with hiting the wall feeling - all transferable skills that help in a workplace! I find people who do sports on a more serious level are more agile and disciplined and therefore are better at work
Running is indeed a noun. Test it by using a possessive apostrophe such as 'Anna's running has improved a lot this year'. Yep noun, but also it's both a present and past participle. Better in bed? Well isn't it all about stamina...? Running in Spanish is centred around the verb 'correr ', to run. When I compete in the Malaga half marathon I keep hearing 'ammo'. Took me ages to figure. It's actually 'vamos' which means come on, but Spanish pronounces the v as b, and b is easily missed, plus Spanish dialect frequently misses the final consonant, especially s.
Just a correction , in portuguese people say força , means strength ( to encourage those who are running ) . Running means corrida in portuguese We can use like corrida de rua ( Street running ) just a example Iam portuguese but i love your channel
Nice video. Just FYI the infinitive of the verb to run in Portuguese is “correr” and the imperative (what you were probably hearing on your run) is “corra”, although there may be some linguistic differences in the Azores...
8:58 - "Are runners crazy?" A wise man once said that one person's insanity is another ones brilliance. I am sure Wilbur and Orville Wright was called nuts for trying to go airborne in some contraption they built in 1903.
I use to belong to a gym before I became a road and trail runner and when I had a session down the gym I would track how many calories I was burning with my watch (I know watches can be very inaccurate at times but how else are you meant to track the calories you burn when weightlifting?). 90% of my sessions would equate to about 1,000 calories burnt, so I’d then go home grab my wallet and straight down the pub for 4 pints (which normally equates to just under 1,000 calories) but doing this I never lost any weight and if anything my stomach was getting bigger
'Running' noun or verb? Depends on how it is used in the sentence. Verb: I 'am running'. 'was running' (progressive verbs). Noun: 'Running' is a sport. Noun phrase: I joined a 'running club.'
For the question: What is running good for? - Plogging, a combination and picking up rubbish is a good way to make a contribution to the environment and socialise. Its a "running with a purpose" which also encourages less "fit" runners, as the pace is a bit slower. The heavier the collection bag of rubbish gets, the more the arms and core get exercised too.
Portuguese here, whatever you said about how we say "running" is wrong. People were probably cheering you on saying "força", which, in that context, means something like "go on".
KNEES: I have just started C25K and my knees have been really sore. I have done quite a lot of research and can't find anything that fits. It feels like the inside of my knees are bruised. It hurts for a few days, get better and then I run again and it hurts. I have done some runs completely pain free and other runs end up causes me a lot of pain for a few days.
I had the same problem when I started out. What really helped me in this regard was incorporating strength training (don’t worry, it’s not too strenuous). I used the exercises from the none to run program (nonetorun.com). In my case, it got better after a few weeks. However, I had to use neoprene knee wraps for a while.
Recycleonwednesday is giving some good advice, I think. That “none to run” program I mentioned is similar to couch to 5k, but at a slower pace. In my case I was able to do the couch to 5k program (repeating a couple of weeks), but i definitely could see having to go with a slower paced program. There’s no shame in that at all.
@@recycleonwednesdays Thanks so much, this is really helpful. I have read online that you shouldn't run if you're in pain so I've just not been managing to do the 3 runs a week. I dont know whether to try doing 3 much shorter runs or doing the c24k runs but only once, maybe twice a week. I dont know. Might just be trial and error. I do think the c25k just builds too fast for my body though. Or I could try doing week 1 again and see what the pain is like and then repeating week one a few times before going to week 2.
@@joyfulnoiseeducation4685 I know a lot of people complained of aches and pains when starting out running. Then they got a gait analysis and propper running shoes and it helped so much.
I use to have lower back and knee pains but after restarting my running all the back pain and knee pain is gone and managed to lose 20kg in the process
Andy says that running improves his mental health, in my case it has the opposite effect. I have to run in the dark when I know there is no one around, as I suffer with scocial anxiety and find it impossible to run during daylight hours becuase people will see running, so my little Jogging sessions are done at 3 maybe 4 am to avoid people. Any advice on how to deal with that?
DarkPa1adin I think it’s in the name. A marathoner has run at least one marathon and a casual jogger does it casually (no races) and I think a runner is someone who keeps up a good personal running pace (can’t talk normally while running)
Loved this video!!!! And for your information there isn’t a single Kate Bush song you can run too they are all over the place “tempo “wise !! And the better version was by Placebo not futureheads... they done “Hounds of love” again another better version!!!

I enjoyed this video so much! Thank you guys. Love hugs and kisses from Guadalajara, Jalisco México. 🤗
Thanks Carla 🙌
Also: Are runners better in bed? 🧐
The Running Channel Of course we are, nothing better than a sweaty top and dirty HOKA’s to get your partner in the mood!!! 🤣
Of course, we have more stamina!
Yes. Yes we are.
Better at what? Snoring? I'd be world champion!
Yeah I'm out like a light if I've been running, I sleep so well........zzzzzz
If anyone cares, 'Running Up That Hill' is about a woman's desire to switch bodies/roles with a man so they can understand each other fully. That and hill reps.
Thanks for the info!
Just discovered how great it's to run in groups. Talking actually helps so I know I'm not going too fast
I love how Andy is as cool as a cucumber
I think that has to be one of my favourite of your videos. So funny! Thanks guys! (Watching from the Amazon jungle, presuming that’s a first for you)
Wow! I think that is a first! What are you doing out there? (Anna)
Cheers!
Running is good for the world! 👍 (Anna)
new favourite channel, keep up the good work and brilliant content!
Thanks! 🙌
This has made me go and check my running playlist to see if I've actually got any songs about running on it.
Answer: just one song: "Run" by Gossamer (…and no Kate Bush)
😂
18:37
...
wait what??
running=correr
I'm running = estou a correr
RUN Forest, RUN! = Corre Forest Corre!
maybe they said "CORRA! CORRA!"
I have it on good authority they actually said Força Força - which translates to ‘be strong’! (Anna)
@@runningchannel oh! that makes sense now.
the persons I know from Açores are all runners or some track and field athletes, and most of the ones that go there is for ultras.
Did you see the European cross country in Lisbon some days ago? some of my team mates were running there
Placebo does a great cover of “running up that hill” as well. 😎👍👍👍
I wonder if that’s actually the one I meant? Futureheads did The Hounds Of Love! 🤦🏻♀️ (Anna)
More than likely Anna 😀
@@runningchannel Yeah
Placebo's cover is great. But what is the song about. We need an update in December 2020 :-) There must also be other questions!
Sounds like you need to watch our video Luke
ruclips.net/video/jUG3mAdrIUU/видео.html
With regards to barefoot / minimalist shoes, it can take months or even years to adjust to it. Everyone is different, so it’s hard to put a timescale on it
It depends on the context. When being used in this sentence "Why is he running?" it's a verb. When used in this sentence "One great form of exercise is running." it is a gerund.
If you get eliud as your guest i'll be jumping up & down
Maybe one day.... (Anna)
What was in those mugs?? Lovely fun pre-Christmas video, thank you!
Haha! Good question Andrew! A little festive tipple perhaps?! 😂 (Anna)
“Are runners tall?” Wow! For the first time in my life being vertically challenged is to my advantage! Whoop whoop! And Anna’s laugh is everything. 💜
In Portuguese it's correr. What people were saying to you in Açores was probably "força", which is something like keep it strong.
I thought "Running up that hill" was the Vassos Alexander book about the Greek ultra, which has been covered on the running channel as well I think.
It is that too. And no coincidence. His first was ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’ - so Running-themed song titles to his books! You should check out the video we did with him on running books (Anna)

Question:
Why does my stride change from mid foot to forefoot in the middle of a run?
Usually it's down to fatigue. You'll notice a lot of pro athletes' strides change during a race, especially towards the end as they tire
In Azores, they were probably saying "força" that means strength and it's a very common encouragement ;) Running in Portuguese is "Correr"
Teacher here. -ing forms are never verbs. They can either be gerunds (nouns) or participles (sort of adjectives but with a different syntactical function) or pretty normal adjectives.
e.g.
Running is fun. (gerund, i.e. noun)
I am out running, having fun. (participle clause)
He called me while I was running. (participle used to form the past progressive. )
You need to close all running programmes before switching off the computer.
We don’t have a video on prevention yet but this might be handy: ruclips.net/video/M8Cq7q7vw-k/видео.html
Running and mental health is just a huge one
One of my favorite videos!
Ahh, thanks Lisa!
I do have a question, for you and anyone else with any experience of it. During trail running, is it common to run into wild animals? And how do you deal with it?
Agree with all your answers 😁 The cadence one is something that runners can become a bit too focused on though e.g. the magical 180 figure!
Oh great! ☺️That’s a relief! (Anna)
Anna can you make a video of your favorite songs to run to!?!? That would be awesome!
Haha! What about a playlist??
@@runningchannel i guess that works too
I have 2 questions. How many people have you scared while running past them? & have you been bitten by a dog ? For me it's many & 6-7 times for the dog over time. Love this channel 👍👍
I got bitten by a dog when In was out filming! And have scared countless people (unintentionally) - mostly when they're wearing headphones. (Anna)
That is waaaaay past my brain capacity! 😂 (Anna)
Really enjoyed this fun video, and you guys made some really good points in between the banter.🤣
Ha! Thanks! We try to educate AND entertain 😂 (Anna)
Runners know what discipline, pacing and how to cope with hiting the wall feeling - all transferable skills that help in a workplace! I find people who do sports on a more serious level are more agile and disciplined and therefore are better at work
8:31: No we are not.
Because of the dopamine realised we are no different than other drug addicts.
The grammar stumped us! But I'm glad you think my running's improved this year!
Also excellent additional thoughts. Thanks! (Anna)
A video with Andy discussing running economy in more detail would be great.
Crazy, most certainly. Having done the Alpha Wolf Run series this year, I can definitely say we are with pride.😜
Spot on 👍
Just a correction , in portuguese people say força ,
means strength ( to encourage those who are running ) .
Running means corrida in portuguese
We can use like corrida de rua ( Street running ) just a example
Iam portuguese but i love your channel
Nice video. Just FYI the infinitive of the verb to run in Portuguese is “correr” and the imperative (what you were probably hearing on your run) is “corra”, although there may be some linguistic differences in the Azores...
Thanks Daniel. Apparently what I heard was ‘Força’ which means ‘be strong’ 💪 (Anna)
Makes perfect sense! Can’t wait for the second part of that video...
Don’t forget Harriette Thompson ages 94 who was the oldest person to finish a half marathon and the oldest person to finish a marathon.
What a legend!
That was good fun! Thank you.
Thanks for watching! 🙌
I totally thought 'running up that hill' was referring to hill reps too!
😂 well now you know! (Anna)
8:58 - "Are runners crazy?"
A wise man once said that one person's insanity is another ones brilliance. I am sure Wilbur and Orville Wright was called nuts for trying to go airborne in some contraption they built in 1903.
Pleased that the Uxbridge XC river crossing got a mention!I definitely got through better than that guy who basically fell in.
It's my favourite fixture of the year! (Anna)
Anna with the no friends burn gave me a good laugh
I use to belong to a gym before I became a road and trail runner and when I had a session down the gym I would track how many calories I was burning with my watch (I know watches can be very inaccurate at times but how else are you meant to track the calories you burn when weightlifting?). 90% of my sessions would equate to about 1,000 calories burnt, so I’d then go home grab my wallet and straight down the pub for 4 pints (which normally equates to just under 1,000 calories) but doing this I never lost any weight and if anything my stomach was getting bigger
Thanks for sharing Alan!
The Running Channel thank you for providing great advise and stories
Hey Anna,
Did you mean Hounds of Love when talking about the Futurehead's cover? I couldn't find a cover of Running Up That Hill by them :O
I did!!! 🤦🏻♀️ Still Kate Bush. It’s Placebo who did the Running Up That Hill cover! Oops! (Anna)
@@runningchannel the Placebo cover is AWESOME
'Running Up That Hill' is good for running up hills.
Interesting....maybe I’ll have to put that to the test (Anna)
'Running' noun or verb? Depends on how it is used in the sentence. Verb: I 'am running'. 'was running' (progressive verbs). Noun: 'Running' is a sport. Noun phrase: I joined a 'running club.'
True!
Not gunna lie, andy kinda reminds me of the professional runner from nn running team juilen wanders
Another great video👍
👍
Running is a verbal, more specifically, a gerund. (Yes, I pay attention in my English class.)
Plogging is such a great way to make a run feel even MORE worthwhile!
The back pain thing can be remedied with strength work as you mentioned and definitely also stems from form issues
Running is a gerund, a verb that can be used as a noun
Ohh fun fact love that!
Portuguese here, whatever you said about how we say "running" is wrong.
People were probably cheering you on saying "força", which, in that context, means something like "go on".
Is Andy.... still injured? What happened to his park run challenge?
He is I'm afraid Andrew. The challenge is on hold for now, but keep watching, he'll be back to complete it soon! (Anna)
I also did c25k and I found nhs knee strengthening exercises really good😊
I had the same problem when I started out.
Simple answers are the best!
We like to keep it straightforward (Anna)
an interesting one: What makes a runner a runner? or What makes someone a runner? (a casual jogger? a marathoner?)
Thanks Amy! Yes, I realised my musical mistake after we'd filmed 🤦🏻♀️Whoops! Hounds of Love is another banger though! Anna
Running up that hill is also a book about ultra running by vassos Alexander (i think)
