Shells were tested and found to be very difficult to detonate from external damage. This was known to I believe every major navy, and factored into design decisions. During the Iowa reactivation the Navy tested chain shell detonation and found it wasn’t possible to create the catastrophic ones found in game. Never more than a handful would detonate at once. Generally on ships where they are below the magazine it is to provide additional protection against sea mines. When they are above it is to allow vulnerable magazines to be deeper in the ship. I forget the exact reason for their placement in the barbette on American ships, but it may have been related to shell handling and reload procedures as the US on large ships tended towards using relatively more manpower than machine power compared to other navies. In any event it wasn’t an issue, if I recall correctly 14” shells from Arizona were recovered intact from spaces that had been above the detonated magazine.
WT naval fuse delay is an overlooked but very important value. For example, Soviet B-13's SAP is quite effective against small targets but not so much against bigger ones, even if the penetration should be more than enough. The reason may be because its super short delay (0.01s, ).

When you think you're going to be DCed from a game, if you Alt-F4 fast enough and start the game back up it'll ask if you want to be put back in the same match, and if you haven't died yet you'll stay in your current vehicle.
akshually, those quad gun turrets are more like 2x2 gun turrets welded together with, I believe, a very thick wall between both pair of guns, so what they should also model somehow is a possibility of losing only one side of the turret but not the other one, when they take side shots for exemple.
Hey bro you are one of my favorites RUclipsrs of all time and I truly love your videos and you have inspired me to do my own and I have a few questions like what should I do as a beginner and how to do well in battles or like how should I start my videos that’s all anyway keep up the good work bro I support you 😎
18:44 with Noworossijsk in heavy seas in RB you can get the timer to leave the ship too when you turn hard and are parallel to the waves. btw. the guns kinda remind me of Pariszah Kommuna, it's shells are weak for 7.0 too, but Dunkerque at least get's some speed.
As much as I love the Dunkerque, this video demonstrates perfectly why I don't like naval. In tank and air rb, when you face a superior opponent, you can still take a different approach or run away to get to a better position or fight a better opponent. But in naval you're at the mercy of gaijin balancing to where you are going to have the worst 5 minutes of your life slowly cruising while being destroyed by a superior foe you can't even penetrate. All the hope you have is that they become bored and switch targets.
Lol love the fact that you got destroyed the second time by 15cm APHE that at 10km has 147mm of pen vs 225mm of external armour. Sure he could have hit the lowest part where it can pen but the shells looked very close

Lol the hamster wheel server guy makes a reappearance! Not on fire this time, but still having trouble. It's nice to see that you're a true enthusiast of the history and accuracy of this game. It's a shame gaijin isn't as dedicated as you. Isn't the Kronstadt a paper ship? Yet it's shells are terrific, which are paper too if I'm remembering correctly, yet they won't fix inaccuracies with real ships with real stats. Great video, as always 👍
I had hope for Dunkerke... but not gonna bother grinding for this result especially not with the actual system and wrongly nerfed performances... I still have hope for the future of France finally getting what they've been waiting for. (Probably in 5 years idk...)
Last time I tried the Bravy its miniscule pen meant anything above tinfoil was enough to stop it from penetrating your magazine. Then again, that was BEFORE that weird HE buff so maybe it's busted now?

@@brentonherbert7775 Dunkerque was laid down in 1932 to counter the Deutschland class which started construction in 1929. Notably many classes of treaty ship would be designed with the Deutschland class in mind, it was effectively the very sort of ship the naval treaties of the interwar most wanted to prevent and very much helped motivate the development of the fast battleship rather than slower heavier gunned designs. The Scharnhorst class was then laid down as a counter to the Dunkerque class in 1935 after the Anglo-German Naval Agreement.
Idk maybe more people should play it and fix it or maybe people should altogether abondont gajin and wot games to play seapower, coldwaters, gunnerheat, pc, dcs, war in the sea, and ultimate admiral dreadnoughts . By the way most people don’t play at naval because of sea power, war on the sea, and coldwaters etc. try a sim if it’s tank, plane, ship, or troop combat you’ll have more fun than grinding and most of the time it’s a one time purchase for access to the whole game with no grinding. Also dcs is just like war thunder in the way that you pay 100 dollars for a new plane so not very good but good experience when you put in the effort.
15:10 On most destroyers if you turn toward the missile then your bow will protect your magazine and it won't one-shot you. Sometimes it doesn't even do any damage. Also I'm wondering if it could be better to also face the enemy full on (with no angle at all) in the Dunkerque. It might actually be harder for them, at least at long distance, to specifically hit the turrets, and if they hit them it won't be an underwater hit so maybe you are less likely to drown.
14:03 tbh I’m honestly surprised you survived as long as you did against a Scharnhorst. If that was me in my U.S. battleships I wouldn’t have lasted 10 seconds
Some dude is gonna be like, "My gramps was one of the top ballistic engineers when they built the Dunkerque, here's some photos of all his old blueprints for the cannons and shell compartments as well as the exact shell calculations for armor penetration," and just casually drop some never before seen documents from 1932
15:39 That's not the fault of missiles being in naval. Its because of top-tier naval having lots of interwar and WW2 ships playing against modern ones.
Also I’m glad you feel the same about the point and click adventure ships in Naval. Gaijin keeps adding them and they aren’t fun to fight. They also make it so aircraft cant be used as a counter to battleships anymore. So players who dont have battleships are just food for the people who do. Its not like aircraft were easy to play in naval anyways. At least aircraft cost SP as well. The SAM carriers cost nothing
@@DOLLARplays They don't work, and thats just on the funtionality side. they are busted. Even the USS Detroit cant survive them, and Detroit is notorious for being difficult to ammo rack. Even from a balance perspective ships like Roanoke have the best AAA coverage in the game. You can knock space cadets from orbit with it. Every ship in naval basically already has multiple SPAAs bolted to them. SAMs at 4.0 is just broken. Its ironic how planes were the best counter for battleships cause thats how it worked IRL. Now the only direct counter is another battleship. Unless you get a lucky plunge shot in a destroyer or cruiser you are gonna spend the entire match getting ammo racked by Battleships. Again, at least planes cost SP. SAM Carriers cost only SL. Now all a battleship player needs to do is spawn in a SAM carrier after a plane kills them, clear the skies and spawn in another battleship. Before they actually had to spawn in a figher. Not anymore, Heaven forbid Battleship players have to do anything else than mindlessly click on things. Sorry about the rant. I just think that SAM carriers are what ruined naval because its why all the Aircraft players left and now teams are mostly bots.
Dropped my first nuke like last week, i must say the st a1 is really good, saved the replay and waa waa wee waa, had 12 kills, 1 cap and no deaths, thats what it must feel like when you get those enemies that dont see you even though your right there games.

Negative!
Defend the D point!
DEFEND THE DDDDDDDDDDDDDD POINT
0:55 I didn't listen to that sentence above, but I don't regret it at all. Your explanations were very enjoyable and informative
3:17 L'urssaf est partout
PARTOUT 😱
Vraiment partout elle voit tous
Tu est un baguette?
Elle est partout, dans tous les recoins prête à te tomber dessus quand tu t'y attends pas
Faites gaffe mes amis
5:58 I thought it was just a myth, but instead it was hiding all along, +1 naval player who’s with me?!! We shall attack and capture it
Gotta love the occasional extra sound effects you put, oddly entertaining!
Dollar is infact correct. The French Quad turrets had a thick septum right in the middle of the turret, this kept atleast 2 guns in battle should ammo cook off in the turret.
18:12 The Kongo class is notorious for doing that too. One unrepairable breach in the machinery room you're done for.
Now we have to wait for The bigger Sister Richelieu hehe
Hopefully in a year 🤞
I loved The sopranos edits you added it cracked me up🤣 I need to rewatch it! Like always thank you for the amazing videos!
I'm currently rewatching sopranos. My third time
Love your stuff my guy. Have been watching for a long time and you give us several good laughs every time. Take care and keep being you brother!
I appreciate that
“Go to 3:29 to skip my rambling”
Sir…
The rambling is why I’m here.
And that ramble was S tier.
i love how a battleship is faster than the maus
Almost 3 times faster, and probably like 200 times heavier 😂
everytime I see this beauty I just wanna call it dun-ker-kwe. either way, this ship is the entire reason I started grinding french naval tree when it came out. hope they make the guns a bit less... shite, for lack of a better term. Lovely video as always dollar!
Oh boy here we go DUNKERQUE!
I really love this ship. Reminds me of a ship the MC of a Sci-fi would use to out gun pray, but out run any danger. While having great range and maneuverability. And with the scout plane. You could really pull off some tactical shenanigans.
0:46 "Skip to 3:29" Me: I dont think I will😏
If it was a Russian vehicle they would have taken best case scenario without any hesitation, but if it's French, British, or Italian it must be worse.
It's one of the things that really puts me off Warthunder.
yeah let's just ignore that the brits have a fully fake APFSDS, and italians have a magic HESH shell for the Lancia
@@o-hogameplay185 The lancia, really? you mean the truck with wooden armour and an appalling reload which noone uses...
I've been playing a British 7.7 line up for the last month and it's been nothing but hell, the APDS can't penetrate anything and does no post pen damage. Sometimes the round does nothing, since they have introduced the hit replays ive got a conqueror with it's 120mm APDS hitting the front of a marder III H from 3.0 and doing nothing, that right nothing, no deflection no shell shatter and no ghost shell, it hits and just does no damage...
The only magic is the Russian ballistic caps that make their rounds perform right angle turns when they hit the armour, i mean that's the only way they would penetrate some of the angles they do.
The APDS or fake APFSDS as you say is so broken and unreliable that most of the time it just doesn't work.
Take shell shatter for example, ok the shell has shattered but what happened to the pieces???
They are still moving forward at 1400m/s they don't just disappear or magically deflect, check out one of the many simulation channels on RUclips and you will see i'm right. The rounds often break a part and the pieces still push through the armour, the round doesn't just disappear.
@@commanderdon4300 omg the amount of skill issue on your end is immeasurable.
"The lancia, really? you mean the truck with wooden armour and an appalling reload which noone uses..."
does not matter if nobody uses it
"I've been playing a British 7.7 line up for the last month and it's been nothing but hell, the APDS can't penetrate anything and does no post pen damage. because all those (17pdr, 83mm, 120mm on the Conq) are gen 1 APDS that are made from T. carbide. it does little damage, has horrible angle pen, xshatters a lot.
when you get the Vickers Mk1 and Cent Mk 10, then you will get the actually good ones since they use gen 2 APDS, which is extremely good
"The only magic is the Russian ballistic caps that make their rounds perform right angle turns when they hit the armour, i mean that's the only way they would penetrate some of the angles they do."
those are flat nose shells and thus they have increased effect against angled armor.
also please show me one of those "right angle turns"
"Take shell shatter for example, ok the shell has shattered but what happened to the pieces???

i know all of these. they are not modelled. if the shell shatters it disappears.
*same happens with soviet APDS*
so just because you have skill issue it does not mean bias.
When you think you're going to be DCed from a game, if you Alt-F4 fast enough and start the game back up it'll ask if you want to be put back in the same match, and if you haven't died yet you'll stay in your current vehicle.
The moment they add USS North Carolina. I’m in. We already got Raleigh. Now I need NC BB-55.
Well looks like we're getting Colorado class ship next update. North Carolina will be the next step.
History lessons and rambles with DOLLAR. I could listen to more of those. Good stuff DOLLAR.
The only thing the snail take from me is time
I swear I went to watch RUclips one last time before going to sleep (03:22 in the night/ Brazil) and I came across this video; I love you, dollar.
akshually, those quad gun turrets are more like 2x2 gun turrets welded together with, I believe, a very thick wall between both pair of guns, so what they should also model somehow is a possibility of losing only one side of the turret but not the other one, when they take side shots for exemple.
Hey bro you are one of my favorites RUclipsrs of all time and I truly love your videos and you have inspired me to do my own and I have a few questions like what should I do as a beginner and how to do well in battles or like how should I start my videos that’s all anyway keep up the good work bro I support you 😎
At least we can all agree that Gaijiin putting zero thought into anything is core to Warthunder.
Fully agree
God dollar you got me good with the D point jokes, what throwback to the good ol days 😜
That's true. This is why good balancing is important in naval
Lol love the fact that you got destroyed the second time by 15cm APHE that at 10km has 147mm of pen vs 225mm of external armour. Sure he could have hit the lowest part where it can pen but the shells looked very close
Which I could see the boat of my childhood in warthunder French tech tree, named Duguay-Trouin(1923-57) he got shot down in Dunkerque by the Germans my grand father had to hide from SS under the port
I listened to all your yapping because i like how you explain to me more about War Thunder and from WW2 Era
The action of naval battles is so intense, one can use it for a lullaby
Stop
Cool learning segment in the start ty dollar
I had hope for Dunkerke... but not gonna bother grinding for this result especially not with the actual system and wrongly nerfed performances...
I still have hope for the future of France finally getting what they've been waiting for.
(Probably in 5 years idk...)
Last time I tried the Bravy its miniscule pen meant anything above tinfoil was enough to stop it from penetrating your magazine. Then again, that was BEFORE that weird HE buff so maybe it's busted now?
14:30 Kinda makes sense since Scharnhorst was specifically designed to counter the Dunkerque class.
Right right thats why half the comments are disagreeing with you and the other half are agreeing with you and not a single one of you has linked a source to the obvious out your ass bs.
I’ll never skip your rambling Dollar. It’s my favorite part.
bro made 5 naval warthunder players happy
Love the video and overa naval stuff your the only naval RUclipsr I watch 👍
15:10 On most destroyers if you turn toward the missile then your bow will protect your magazine and it won't one-shot you. Sometimes it doesn't even do any damage.
Also I'm wondering if it could be better to also face the enemy full on (with no angle at all) in the Dunkerque. It might actually be harder for them, at least at long distance, to specifically hit the turrets, and if they hit them it won't be an underwater hit so maybe you are less likely to drown.
15:47 Hey dollar do you know the Tornado IDS 😏
Been waiting for some Dollar ship action 🙏
🙏
🫡
14:03 tbh I’m honestly surprised you survived as long as you did against a Scharnhorst. If that was me in my U.S. battleships I wouldn’t have lasted 10 seconds
I dont unsderstand a shit about naval but somehow i like to see dollar playing
Some dude is gonna be like, "My gramps was one of the top ballistic engineers when they built the Dunkerque, here's some photos of all his old blueprints for the cannons and shell compartments as well as the exact shell calculations for armor penetration," and just casually drop some never before seen documents from 1932
15:39 That's not the fault of missiles being in naval. Its because of top-tier naval having lots of interwar and WW2 ships playing against modern ones.
It’s BEAUTIFUL! My favorite ship classes, Dunkerque and Richelieu, unique and beautiful.
Always happy to listen to Dollar's rambling 👍
Also I’m glad you feel the same about the point and click adventure ships in Naval. Gaijin keeps adding them and they aren’t fun to fight. They also make it so aircraft cant be used as a counter to battleships anymore. So players who dont have battleships are just food for the people who do. Its not like aircraft were easy to play in naval anyways. At least aircraft cost SP as well. The SAM carriers cost nothing
I can't see how they can make them work
@@DOLLARplays They don't work, and thats just on the funtionality side. they are busted.
13:00 peak gameplay😂 I love your Videos
That's why i don't like naval 😂
your editing is top tier love your vids
Now imagine how well he'd play the Dunkerque if he was using both hands
Eweryone gets happy.
Reality in game:It suck!
Ship leans slightly.
French dudes: Abandon Ship!!! 😂😂😂
ATTACK THE D POINT 🗣️
That’s crazy that an anti air missile penned a warship, nutty even, bad code even….
A dollar video right before work, Monday morning? That's a blessing!
The missles on Bravy are technically dual purpose. Sam with the USS Douglas and its Missiles😊
Love the vids dollar:)
13:08 peak naval gameplay 😂
Dropped my first nuke like last week, i must say the st a1 is really good, saved the replay and waa waa wee waa, had 12 kills, 1 cap and no deaths, thats what it must feel like when you get those enemies that dont see you even though your right there games.
Yup. Some games just goes like this. Great job💪🏻
When playing all forward turreted battleships like the french ones. You always wanna keep the bow towards the enemy. Especially DQ. DQ has paper for side armor. Its like a reverse Hood.
For that to work you need great frontal armor Dunkerque don't have
Damn, Jay Gilstrap is on War Thunder too?
Literally cannot escape that man.
Thanks Dollar! Was waiting for it
i never skip ur rambling, i love it
It's the 03:20 of the morning in my country... but i never lost a new vid, love you betty ❤
my dude best part of the video is your rambling and music
and pls play stalker 2 you will like it ....Greetings from Serbia
inb4 War Thunder Forum leaks top secret blueprint for 355mm AP shells of a french WW2 battle ship to prove developers wrong and it still won't get fixed
6 min to kill a ship, they wonder why no 1 plays naval
You can also kill a ship in 1 second.
Dollar, this intro showes your clean joy from adding this ship and I thank you for making my day better with first 16s of this video 😊😊😊
I'm very happy to finally see Dunkerque in War Thunder 🤗
why would I skip your rambling? that's most entertaining and enjoyable my friend. a very good foreplay for the main video if you like ;)
Gaijin and admitting they're wrong, that's not gonna happen.
Just use your countermeasures against the missile. I mean torpedoes by the way. The proxy activates on torpedoes.
That was finally fixed 2 months ago.
Better off locking the missile if you've got radar & or with the use of a flak wall against it.
Of course this'll only work for late WWII & post war ships, not vessels like the Mogador class.
15:10 that didn't looked like moused guided, as the turns were to sharp so it was very likely keyboard guided xD
13:07 most engaging blue water naval engagement on warthunder 🗿🗿🗿
But at least it can't be compared to world of warships!! That's the really really really important bit for Gaijin.
It is a joyous day, he has found the illusive D point
so much waiting for Dunkerque, now another 2-3 years for Richelieu or Jean Bart
So that's the illusive D point, all the way in Naval mode.
