Wow this was an amazing watch. You really nailed it and loved how you delivered on some edits. Especially the little “mess” montage was executed really well! This was a great topic needed to be discussed.
Did not expect GD EmpLemon when watching this one video about verification races. This and the rest of your channel are so good! Crazy how you have so few subscribers.
The Silent Clubstep race reminded me of a scene in the Cars movie where Don’t press read more if you hate spoilers Lightning McQueen is ahead of everyone but stops inches away from the finish line, letting Chick Hicks cross it and win the Piston Cup.
To be fair to the AOD race there really weren't many people in the race who had a reasonable chance at beating it. It was really only Trick and Cursed you had to follow. Everyone else didn't have nearly as much progress. Nobody else was really in any race, and there was no beef between Trick and Cursed afterwards. So actually a pretty clean race all things considered. It was just disappointing that Dils gave up. Everyone was willing to just let Dils beat the level until he made it a verification race. For Acheron it was really only OneAlphaHelix or Zoink that had a reasonable chance to verify it. The confusing part came in that there were so many different versions. You had Wolvez's version, Alpha's version, Zoinks version, Doggie's version, original version, and unnerfed version. (Alpha has a video explaining these versions if you are interested.) It was a mess and a half to keep track of all the versions, on top of what all the people showcasing the versions were doing. In addition to some people being disappointed in the version actually verified. While I certainly agree that each race was a mess of a bunch of people wanting to capitalize on the popularity of the levels, the races themselves didn't cause that much drama. It was really only the Silent Clubstep and Tartarus race that had any drama behind them. But, I would hesitate to call them races, as they were really just a player having a verification snatched from them after it was agreed by many that they should have just been free to have the verification after all thier hard work. I think the real lesson of all this is to not dedicate so much time trying to verify one level that anyone could verify. Try to climb up the ranks a little, have more fun with the game, and perhaps spend more time on your verification project when you have gotten to a level where you are ready. Otherwise, you risk the potential of having your fame stolen by someone else and not being known for anything other than your progress on said level.
I completely agree, That's why for AOD and Acheron I focused less on the players who made progress during the race (not the assigned verifications), and more on the fact that people were just trying to capitalize off of their popularity and why they did so. I should've brought that up in the video, along with the snatching of other people verifications, While it's true that levels like Tartarus and Silent Clubstep weren't suppose to be beaten and thus were open verification, I believe that a lot of drama could've been avoided if they just weren't stolen like that. Not any disrespect to Paqoe and Dolphy for their achievements, it was just a little disappointing to see y'know?
@@TroyPM Thanks for the reply! I really like videos like this one that get you to think. I forgot to say how good it was in my original comment, but this is a well edited, and organized video, especially for a channel of your size. I think I will subscribe. I think we are pretty much in agreement. While verification races can be fun to watch, it leaves plenty of opportunities to cash in on the level's popularity, and can cause drama when someone who was favored to verify the level doesn't end up doing it. While I agree that Dolphy and Paqoe had every right to verify the levels they did, it still does suck to see Mullsy and Vision not get the honor of verifying it after dedicating so much of thier time to said levels.
@@FGSharkboi late response, but the reason I didn't mention Dils Thik as one of the potential AOD verifiers is because the verification race happened after he gave up on AOD. Before he gave up, it wasn't a race as he was then the set verifier. Since he gave up he has stated multiple times that he was never coming back to the level to finish it. So unless Dils changed his mind, he was not in the race to verify it.
Slaughterhouse is another example, where SpaceUK beat it before anyone else did even 1/3rd of the level Edit: Yes, I know SpaceUK hacked. It just shows more how stupid verification races can be.
This video feels heavily inspired from EmpLemons video on chokes, which i really really enjoyed! glad to see someone taking that video format and applying it to geometry dash.
Do you think that what ended up happening to sonic wave could be considered a mess? Because it shares a kind of similar story to AOD and Acheron, someone fails close to the finish line (Mefewe's 98%) and suddenly everyone is trying to beat the level, at that time there was a massive quantity of remakes of sonic wave, and at the end you didnt knew who to root for.
I think part of it is a verification is more than just beating a level, its contributing something new to the community and being the reason people are able to play it. You may be a victor of Blood bath, but Riot will forever be the reason anyone was able to play it at all, Riot was the one who brought it to us, so he gets the praise. in other words its the opportunity to help out and do something for a reason greater than vanity. like imagine if the way charity worked is if only one person could donate to charity. there would probably be "donation races" there because multiple people want to help those in need, but in this situation, only one could do it. Its like that.
aod and acheron i didnt see as messes but they had their own issues Acheron - Zoink buffing it constantly ruining it. Made it more of a challenge than fun AOD - more of white noise
idc how many chokes there have been but NOTHING, and i mean NOTHING comes even remotely close to mefewe. Mefewe, almost a full 2 years before sonic wave got verified died at 98% to a BUFFED VERSION OF THE LEVEL. If he had beaten it then and there theres a good chance that most of the levels on the list today wouldnt be there.
I 100% agree, but I gave up on the demonlist a while ago. Everyone cares way too much about what the next hardest level is and that when another one is being verified, you should drop your shit and pay attention. New top 1 levels are no longer exciting, and they haven't been for years now. It is no longer a matter of "if" it's just a matter of "when". I could not be bothered to pay attention if we all KNOW that it will be verified and the demonlist is going to continue to become more unapproachable and nearly unplayable I was around when Bloodbath was verified. It was exciting for a few reasons. Number 1 being the fact that top 1 demons were not NEARLY as common. Number 2, having that achievement wasn't as sought after as it is today, nobody cared as much to be "the first person" and rather they just wanted to push the limits. Number 3, for a while, nobody even thought that Bloodbath could even be beaten. It was only when Riot got better and better progress when everyone believed it could be done. The hype constantly grew and even Robtop himself got involved in that. I started to lose interest in top 1 demons around the time Tartarus was being verified. But I still somewhat kept an eye on the demonlist. But when Silent Clubstep was verified, I just gave up completely Top 1 demons just won't ever have that hype again, it's beyond repair
I think races are cool to see, but I just wouldn't participate. I don't get how underdogs that jump to beat really high end demons have fun. Some taking above half a million attempts. I'd suspect they just don't. And assigning verifications is weird aswell, as people might stop liking the level while playing it, but not they built and expectation from the community that they have to follow through. In the end. It's just a game. My personal hardest is Bloodbath. Why would I jump to beat Acheron or Firework and lose 2 years of my life when I could just play low end extremes, have 100x more fun, and it still being a decently impressive achievement, as there are very few people with a double digit amount of completed extremes?
i think there is another topic- bugs (example -breakout redux) it is really buggy due to the verification race between waivee and idk but they didnt have time to playtest it and its really buggy especially on 240hz
its simple to fix these since players become better at the gamemodes robtop needs to update his game and add more gamemodes but not too many where it becomes a hassle to learn them all
honestly open verifications are kinda a rich-get-richer thing for clout in gdc like it would be so much more interesting and good for the community if open verifications were not a thing and if host gave their levels to lesser known people but that wouldn't happen so oh well
i still dont get the part about them being bad? So just because somebody fumbles and dies means that the entire concept is bad? Doesn't really make sense to me...
Ok if we're talking about this I am the number 1 person to hate such acts like istg the only thing they chase is clout and it's honestly disgusting. Either way I haven't enjoyed watching a GD video this much for a whole week or 2. Love the great effort!!
honestly, by choosing to race in a verification race, you are acknowledging and accepting the fact that your #1 spot on the level can be taken away at any moment. therefore, you shouldn't be so upset if you or another person's verification spot gets taken over by another person in a verification race, even if that 'stolen' fame was from somebody that cheated.
The argument of getting mad at a verifier because another person "deserved it" is absolutely ridiculous. Its a competition. The better/faster player wins. Should a great player just stop their progress to "not hurt another players feelings?" This is stupid.
So your argument is that underdogs with the odds against them don't usually win? Yeah, dude, that's how odds work. Can't blame top players for wanting to push the game further. Each old impossible level is a new leap.
great video. clearly inspired by emplemon, who i must mention is... not. a great person? like... he holds a lot of really awful views and even used an antisemitic dogwhistle (the happy merchant) in one of his videos.
You cannot say verification races are stupid because skilled players win against determined players. Just accept this as a rule, skill beats any dedication and perseverance you could have. This just proves that you can only be a good player if you play a wide range of hard levels. In the examples you've shown the ones who lost were going for bigger difficulty jumps than ones who won, and had less hard levels completed. And obviously the best player wins the race most of the time. So when a worse player that spent more time and effort on a level loses the race, it's usually pretty evident and expected. When you have little to no levels completed, you get bigger mindblocks because you do not have enough experience. Beating a good amount of levels gives you an impression that no matter how bad the experience will be there will always be the end of it for you. But I agree with the Acheron race being a mess, but it was only a mess because everyone played different versions of it
