One of the best players to come out of the Soviet Union. When he got his jersey retired (rightfully so) he mentioned growing up in a communist country and the history buff in me completely forgot that the now Czech Republic was under the iron curtain (yeah, he was drafted after the fall of the USSR but as a kid he's thinking there's no way I'm playing in the NHL coming from where I'm coming from). Thank goodness he was wrong and the Devils scouts were smart enough to see the athletic talent that was there. Definitely one of my favorite Devils ever. Played the game the right way and made for some incredible memories. Plus, his stats would be higher if it wasn't for him getting sick and the lockout. He didn't make it this year but in my eyes he is a hall of fame player, no questions asked. The point totals are there and so are the clutch moments where he thrived. And to this day he's one of the best passers I've ever seen. That no look pass to Arnott in double OT to win the Cup was a thing of beauty. The A line was a thing of beauty and the chemistry he had with Sykora was incredible. Happy he's part of the development camp this year. These young players should listen up when Patty speaks.
Also, Shero deserves credit with recognizing the great history of the Devils and keeping guys who meant so much to the organization have a home as a Devil after they've retired. They brought back Broduer, great move, and Shero said that there is always a place for Elias with the organization if/when he wants it.
Neat little article about Elias and the scouting done by Conte and his crew (I know he gets lambasted a lot lately but he made some amazing picks when he was the head of scouting with the Devils).

My friend's dad was on the engineering team that built the Kemper Arena, the home of the KC Scouts. The main problem with the Arena was the location. Almost impossible to get to regardless of what part of town you were coming from. It was located in the stockyards (yes that is what it sounds like). Throw in the fact that KC was used to winning sports (Chiefs recent Superbowl) and the horrid team that was on the ice due to by today's standards would not be a reasonable expansion draft and the team was destined to fail.
I lived in KC for 35 years. I sort of adopted the Devils as my team when I got into hockey and still follow them today even though I am in Detroit though I am a Wings fan primarily now.
To me, it was always sad that the Scouts left a city that built an arena just for them. Ironically the roof of the arena collapse about 4 years after the Scouts left town so maybe they knew what they were doing. And I always gave my friend a hard time and blamed his dad for the roof.
Hopefully, KC gets a new NHL team at some point. In the meantime, NHL fans there can catch the ECHL or drive (or my favorite, take the train) to St. Louis to catch the Blues.

Plus, imagine a lineup with the center depth of Hischier, Hughes, Zajac, and Hebrique. That's a pretty damn good middle.
Though I think Vatanen, even though he gets lampooned by the fan base, will be much better in a more sheltered role. He's never been a #1 defenseman and he'll fit in better with a lesser role.

I am going to go out on a limb and say that the NJ Devils history is way better than the NY Rangers history. In 42 years 3 cups. The Rangers have 4 but they have been around almost since the league began. This why I say that Rangers history is a joke compared even to the Devils. The Rangers are the most overhyped and overrated franchise in sports history.

Every single one of his big hits were legal in the NHL at the time. He was penalized for elbowing 3 times in his 21 year career. He played within the rules of the game.
